I have heard of a tree (Heaven's Christmas Tree)

Author: Charles A. Tindley Appears in 8 hymnals Topics: Advent and Christmas First Line: I have heard of a tree, a great Christmas tree Refrain First Line: There is a package for me on that tree Lyrics: 1 I have heard of a tree, a great Christmas tree, it was fixed in yon Bethlehem's stall, The blessings of heaven for you and for me, a Christmas present for all. Refrain: There is a package for me on that tree; a precious token that someone loves me. Oh yes, I can see on Calvary's tree, that there is a package for me. 2 There is one I behold in letters of gold, it hangs on a limb near to me, 'Tis labeled "salvation," and Jesus, I'm told, has bought that package for me. [Refrain] 3 There is one just above, it's title is love, it is marked by a deep crimson stain. For there it was tied by the Lord when he died, and glory to his dear name. [Refrain] 4 Another I see, it must be for me, the worlds "I will help you" I read. While holding his hand, by faith I can stand, and this is the package I need. [Refrain] 5 There are many, I'm sure, but just this one more I speak of above all the rest. It spells "happy home" with God near the throne, a place where the weary shall rest. [Refrain] Used With Tune: [I have heard of a tree, a great Christmas tree]

Prepare the way, O Zion!

Appears in 30 hymnals Topics: Advent and Christmas Advent Lyrics: 1 Prepare the way, O Zion! Ye awful deeps, rise high, Sink low, ye towering mountains, The Lord is drawing nigh: The righteous King of glory, Foretold in sacred story. Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name! 2 O Zion, He approacheth, Thy Lord and King for aye! Palm-branches strew with gladness Spread garments in His way. God's promise faileth never, Hosianna sound forever! Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name! 3 Fling wide thy portals, Zion, And hail Thy glorious King; His tidings of salvation To every people bring, Who, waiting yet in sadness Would sing His praise with gladness. Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name! 4 He cometh not with warriors, And not with pomp and show; Yet smiteth He with terror Sin, death, and every foe. The Spirit's sword He wieldeth, Not e'en to death He yieldeth, Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name. 5 Give heed, thou sinful people, Thy King and Saviour own: The kingdom which He foundeth Is not an earthly one; No power can overthrow it, Nor earthly wisdom know it. Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name! 6 The throne which He ascendeth Is fixed in heaven above: His sanctified dominion Is light alone and love. With grace and peace abounding His praise be ever sounding. Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name! 7 Jerusalem is fallen, And closed its temple-door; Its sacrifices ended; Its scepter is no more. Christ's kingdom never ceaseth, Its glory still increaseth. Oh, blest is He that came In God the Father's Name!

Praise God the Lord, ye sons of clay

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: Advent and Christmas Lyrics: 1 PRAISE God the Lord, ye sons of clay, Before His highest throne, Who opens heaven again this day, And gives us His own Son. 2 He leaves His heavenly Father's throne, Is born an infant small, And in a manger poor and lone Lies in a humble stall. 3 He lays aside His power divine, A servant's form doth take, In want and lowness He doth pine Who heaven and earth did make. 4 He nestles at His mother's breast, Her milk His food must be, Whom saints and angels call the Blest, For David's Root is He. 5 'Tis He who in these latter days From Judah's tribe would come, By whom the Lord again would raise His Church, His Christendom. 6 A wondrous change which He does make. He takes our flesh and blood, And lays aside for sinners' sake, His majesty of God. 7 He serves, that I a lord may be; A great exchange, indeed! Could Jesus' love do more for me, To help me in my need? 8 He opens us again the door Of Paradise to-day; The cherub guards the gate no more. To God our thanks we pay.

Isaiah the prophet has written of old

Author: Joy F. Patterson (b. 1931) Meter: 11.8.11.8 D Appears in 14 hymnals Topics: Hymns and Spiritual Songs Advent and Christmas Lyrics: 1 Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God's earthly kingdom shall come. Instead of the thorn tree the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall break forth into song, The peoples be led forth in peace. For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the seas. 2 Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world. And conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth; the brier and the thorn grow wild. Lord, hasten to bring in your kingdom on earth, when no one shall hurt or destroy. When wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy. Scripture: Isaiah 11:5-9 Used With Tune: SAMANTHRA

Let the earth now praise the Lord

Appears in 38 hymnals Topics: Advent and Christmas Lyrics: 1 LET the earth now praise the Lord, Who hath truly kept His word, And the sinners’ Help and Friend Now at last to us doth send. 2 What the fathers most desired, What the prophets’ heart inspired, What they longed for many a year, Stands fulfilled in glory here. 3 Abram’s promised great Reward, Zion’s Helper, Jacob’s Lord, Him of twofold race behold, Truly came, as long foretold. 4 Welcome, O my Saviour, now! Hail! My Portion, Lord, art Thou! Here, too, in my heart, I pray, O prepare Thyself a way. 5 King of glory, enter in! Cleanse it from the filth of sin, As Thou hast so often done; It belongs to Thee alone. 6 As Thy coming was in peace, Noiseless, full of gentleness, Let the same mind dwell in me That was ever found in Thee. 7 Comfort my desponding heart; Thou my Strength and Refuge art. I am weak, and cunningly Satan lays his snares for me. 8 Bruise for me the Serpent’s head, That, set free from doubt and dread, I may cleave to Thee in faith, Safely kept through life and death: 9 And when Thou dost come again As a glorious King to reign, I with joy may see Thy face, Truly ransomed by Thy grace.
