Psalm 130

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.298 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Backsliding soul pardoned First Line: Out of the deeps of long distress Lyrics: Out of the deeps of long distress, The borders of despair, I sent my cries to seek thy grace, My groans to move thine ear. Great God, should thy severer eye, And thine impartial hand, Mark and revenge iniquity, No mortal flesh could stand. But there are pardons with my God For crimes of high degree; Thy Son has bought them with his blood, To draw us near to thee. [I wait for thy salvation, Lord, With strong desires I wait; My soul, invited by thy word, Stands watching at thy gate.] [Just as the guards that keep the night Long for the morning skies, Watch the first beams of breaking light, And meet them with their eyes; So waits my soul to see thy grace, And, more intent than they, Meets the first openings of thy face, And finds a brighter day.] [Then in the Lord let Isr'el trust, Let Isr'el seek his face; The Lord is good as well as just, And plenteous is his grace. There's full redemption at his throne For sinners long enslaved; The great Redeemer is his Son, And Isr'el shall be saved.] Scripture: Psalm 130 Languages: English

Psalm 130

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.299 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backsliding soul pardoned First Line: From deep distress and troubled thoughts Lyrics: From deep distress and troubled thoughts To thee, my God, I raised my cries; If thou severely mark our faults, No flesh can stand before thine eyes. But thou hast built thy throne of grace Free to dispense thy pardons there, That sinners may approach thy face, And hope and love, as well as fear. As the benighted pilgrims wait, And long, and wish for breaking day, So waits my soul before thy gate; When will my God his face display? My trust is fixed upon thy word, Nor shall I trust thy word in vain; Let mourning souls address the Lord, And find relief from all their pain. Great is his love, and large his grace, Through the redemption of his Son; He turns our feet from sinful ways, And pardons what our hands have done. Scripture: Psalm 130 Languages: English

Great God, how oft did Isra'l prove

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LXXVIII.IV (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backsliding and Forgiveness Lyrics: 21 Great God, how oft did Isra'l prove By turns thine anger, and thy love? There in a glass our hearts may see How fickle and how false they be. 22 How soon the faithless Jews forgot The dreadful wonders God had wrought; Then they provok'd him to his face Nor fear his pow'r, nor trust his grace. 23 The Lord consum'd their years in pain, And made their travels long and vain; A tedious march thro' unknown ways Wore out their strength, and spent their days. 24 Oft when they saw their brethren slain, They mourn'd and sought the Lord again; Call'd him the rock of their abode, Their high Redeemer and their God. 25 Their pray'rs and vows before him rise As flatt'ring words or solemn lies, While their rebellious tempers prove False to his cov'nant and his love. 26 Yet could his sov'reign grace forgive The men who ne'er deserv'd to live; His anger oft away he turn'd, Or else with gentle flame it burn'd. 27 He saw their flesh was weak and frail, He saw temptations still prevail; The God of Abrah'm lov'd them still, And led them to his holy hill. Peter's Fall and Recovery

Author: Fawcett Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCCXIV (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Backslidings and Returns First Line: How did the powers of darkness rage Lyrics: 1 How did the powers of darkness rage Against the son of God! While cruel men on earth engage To shed his precious blood. 2 His friends forsook him with surprise, When that dread scene began; And one perfidiously denies He ever knew the man. 3 How feeble human efforts prove Against temptation's power! E'en Peter's flaming zeal and love Are vanquish'd in an hour. 4 His firmest purpose will not stand Behold his guilt and shame! Lord, keep me by thy mighty hand, Or I shall do the same. 5 At length the suffering Savior turns, And looks with pitying eyes; Peter relents, withdraws and mourns, And loud for mercy cries. 6 So boundless is Jehovah's grace, He hears the humble prayer; If I am found in Peter's case, I would not still dispair. 7 Look on me, Lord, with eyes of love, My wandering soul restore; My guilt forgive, my fears remove, And let me sin no more. Perseverance desired

Author: Dr. S. Stennett Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CVI (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backslidings and returns Dreaded First Line: Jesus, my Savior and my God Lyrics: 1 Jesus, my Savior and my God, Thou hast redeem'd me with thy blood; By ties both natural and divine, I am, and ever will be thine. 2 But ah! should my inconstant heart, Ere I'm aware, from thee depart, What dire reproach would fall on me, For such ingratitude to thee! 3 The thought I dread, the crime I hate, The guilt, the shame, I deprecate: And yet so mighty are my foes I dare not trust my warmest vows. 4 Pity my frailty, dearest Lord, Grace in the needful hour afford; O steel this tim'rous heart of mine With fortitude and love divine. 5 So shall I triumph o'er my fears, And gather joys from all my tears; So shall I to the world proclaim The honors of the Christian name. Thou Man of griefs, remember me

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn Book #HXII (1791) Topics: Convinced of Backsliding Lyrics: 1 Thou Man of griefs, remember me, Who never canst thyself forget! Thy last, mysterious agony, Thy fainting pangs, and bloody sweat! 2 When wrestling in the strength of pray'r, Thy spirit sunk beneath its load; Thy feebled flesh abhorr'd to bear The wrath of an almighty God. 3 Father, if I may call thee so, Regard my fearful heart's desire! Remove this load of guilty woe, Nor let me in my sins expire! 4 I tremble, lest the wrath divine, Which bruises now my wretched soul, Should bruise this wretched soul of mine, Long as eternal ages roll. 5 To thee my last distress I bring! The heighten'd fear of death I find; The tyrant, brandishing his sting, Appears, and hell is close behind. 6 I deprecate that death alone, That endless banishment from thee: O save, and give me to thy Son, Who trembl'd, wept, and bled for me. To whom shall we go but unto thee? or, life and safety in Christ alone

Author: Steele Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CDXL (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backslidings and returns Dreaded First Line: Thou only sovereign of my heart Lyrics: 1 Thou only sovereign of my heart, My refuge, my almighty friend— And can my soul from thee depart, On whom alone my hopes depend? 2 Whither, ah! whither shall I go, A wretched wand'rer from my Lord? Can this dark world of sin and woe One glimpse of happiness afford? 3 Eternal life thy words impart, On these my fainting spirit lives; Here sweeter comforts cheer my heart Than all the round of nature gives. 4 Let earth's alluring joys combine, While thou art near, in vain they call; One smile, one blissful smile of thine, My dearest Lord, outweighs them all. 5 Thy name my inmost powers adore, Thou art my life, my joy, my care: Depart from thee—'tis death—'tis more! 'Tis endless ruin, deep despair! 6 Low at thy feet my soul would lie, Here safety dwells, and peace divine; Still let me live beneath thine eye, For life eternal life is thine. Languages: English

Apostacy—Will ye also go away?

Author: Newton Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CDXXXIX (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Backslidings and returns Dreaded First Line: When any turn from Zion's way Lyrics: 1 When any turn from Zion's way, (Alas! what numbers do!) Methinks I hear my Savior say, "Wilt thou forsake me too?" 2 Ah Lord! with such a heart as mine, Unless thou hold me fast; I feel I must, I shall decline, And prove like them at last. 3 Yet thou alone hast power, I know, To save a wretch like me: To whom, or whither, could I go, If I should turn from thee? 4 Beyond a doubt I rest assur'd Thou art the Christ, of God; Who hast eternal life secur'd, By promise and by blood. 5 The help of men and angels join'd, Could never reach my case; Nor can I hope relief to find, But in thy boundless grace. 6 No voice but thine can give me rest, And bid my fears depart; No love but thine can make me bless'd, And satisfy my heart. 7 What anguish has that question stirr'd, If I will also go? Yet, Lord, relying on thy word, I humbly answer No! Languages: English

Why is my Heart so far from Thee

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #II.XX (1766) Topics: Backslidings and Returns Lyrics: 1 Why is my Heart so far from Thee, My God, my chief Delight; Why are my Thoughts no more by Day With Thee, no more by Night? [2 Why should my foolish Passions rove? Where can such Sweetness be, As I have tasted in thy Love, As I have found in Thee?] 3 When my forgetful Soul renews The Savour of thy Grace, My Heart presumes I cannot lose The Relish all my Days. 4 But ee'r one fleeting Hour is past, The flatt'ring World employs Some sensual Bait to seize my Taste, And to pollute my Joys. [5 Trifles of Nature or of Art, With fair deceitful Charms, Intrude into my thoughtless Heart, And thrust Thee from my Arms.] 6 Then I repent, and vex my Soul, That I should leave Thee so, Where will those wild Affections roll That let a Saviour go? [7 Sin's promis'd Joys are turn'd to Pain, And I am drown'd in Grief; But my dear Lord returns again, He flies to my Relief. 8 Seizing my Soul with sweet Surprize, He draws with loving Bands; Divine Compassion in his Eyes, And Pardon in his Hands.] [9 Wretch that I am, to wander thus, In Chace of false Delight! Let me be fasten'd to thy Cross, Rather than lose thy Sight.] [10 Make Haste, my Days, to reach the Goal, And bring my Heart to rest, On the dear Centre of my Soul, My God, my Saviour's Breast.] Languages: English
