Memories of Zion

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Afflictions Complaint of; Prayer Complaint in First Line: By Babel's streams we sat and wept Lyrics: 1 By Babel's streams we sat and wept, For mem'ry still to Zion clung; The winds alone our harp-strings swept, That on the drooping willows hung. 2 There our rude captors, flushed with pride, A song required to mock our wrongs; Our spoilers called for mirth, and cried, Come, song us one of Zion's songs. 3 Not songs but sighs to us belong When Zion's walls in ruin lie; How shall we sing Jehovah's song While in an alien land we die? 4 O Zion fair, God's holy hill, Wherein our God delights to dwell, Let my right hand forget her skill If I forget to love thee well. 5 If I do not remember thee, Then let my tongue from utterance cease, If any earthly joy to me Be dear as Zion's joy and peace. 6 Remember, Lord, the dreadful day Of Zion's cruel overthrow; How happy he who shall repay The bitter hatred of her foe. Scripture: Psalm 137 Used With Tune: OLIVE'S BROW

Psalm 13

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 64 hymnals Topics: Complaint desertion; Complaint of temptation First Line: How long, O Lord, shall I complain Lyrics: How long, O Lord, shall I complain, Like one that seeks his God in vain? Canst thou thy face for ever hide, And I still pray, and be denied? Shall I for ever be forgot, As one whom thou regardest not Still shall my soul thine absence mourn, And still despair of thy return? How long shall my poor troubled breast Be with these anxious thoughts oppressed? And Satan, my malicious foe, Rejoice to see me sunk so low? Hear, Lord, and grant me quick relief, Before my death conclude my grief: If thou withhold thy heav'nly light, I sleep in everlasting night. How will the powers of darkness boast, If but one praying soul be lost! But I have trusted in thy grace, And shall again behold thy face. Whate'er my fears or foes suggest, Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest; My heart shall feel thy love, and raise My cheerful voice to songs of praise. Scripture: Psalm 13

Appears in 14 hymnals Topics: Complaint of quarellsome Neighbors; Complaint Pride, Atheisim, Oppression, etc. First Line: Lord, if thou dost not soon appear Lyrics: 1 Lord, if thou dost not soon appear, Virtue and truth will fly away; A faithful Man amongst us here Will scarce be found, if thou delay. 2 The whole Discourse, when Neighbors meet, Is fill'd with Trifles loose and vain; Their Lips are Flatt'ry and Deceit, And their proud Language is profane. 3 But Lips that with Deceit abound Shall not maintain their Triumph long; The God of Vengeance will confound The flatt'ring and blaspheming tongue. 4 "Yet shall our Words be free" they cry; "Our tongues shall be controul'd by none: "Where is the Lord will ask us why? "Or, say, our Lips are not our own?" 5 The Lord, who sees the Poor oppresst, And hears th' Oppressor's haughty Strain, Will rise to give his Children Rest, Nor shall they trust his Word in vain. 6 Thy Word, O Lord, tho' often try'd, Void of Deceit shall still appear; Not Silver seven Times purify'd From Dross and Mixture, shines so clear. 7 Thy Grace shall in the darkest Hour Defend the holy Soul from Harm; Tho' when the vilest Men have Power, On ev'ry Side will Sinners swarm. Complaint and Hope under great Pain

Author: Dr. Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 41 hymnals Topics: Complaint and hop in sickness First Line: Lord, I am paine'; but I resign Lyrics: 1 Lord, I am pain'd; but I resign My body to thy will; 'Tis grace, 'tis wisdom all divine, Appoints the pains I feel. 2 Dark are thy ways of providence, While they who love thee groan; Thy reasons lies conceal'd from sense, Mysterious and unknown. 3 Yet nature may have leave to speak, And plead before her God, Lest the o'erburthen'd heart should break Beneath thine heavy rod. 4 These mournful groans and flowing tears, Give my poor spirit ease; While every groan my father hears, And every tear he sees. 5 [How shall I glorify my God In bonds of grief confin'd? Damp'd is my vigor, while this clod Hands heavy on my mind.] 6 Is not some smiling hour at hand With peace upon its wings? Give it, O God, thy swift command, With all the joys it brings.
