Psalm 114

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.250 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Miracles in the wilderness First Line: When Isr'el, freed from Pharaoh's hand Lyrics: When Isr'el, freed from Pharaoh's hand, Left the proud tyrant and his land, The tribes with cheerful homage own Their King, and Judah was his throne. Across the deep their journey lay; The deep divides to make them way; Jordan beheld their march, and fled With backward current to his head. The mountains shook like frighted sheep, Like lambs the little hillocks leap; Not Sinai on her base could stand, Conscious of sovereign power at hand. What power could make the deep divide? Make Jordan backward roll his tide? Why did ye leap, ye little hills? And whence the fright that Sinai feels? Let every mountain, every flood, Retire and know th' approaching God, The King of Isr'el: see him here; Tremble, thou earth, adore and fear. He thunders, and all nature mourns; The rock to standing pools he turns; Flints spring with fountains at his word, And fires and seas confess the Lord. Scripture: Psalm 114 Languages: English

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.CXIV (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Miracles attending Israel's Journey Lyrics: 1 When Isra'l, freed from Pharaoh’s hand, Left the proud tyrant and his land, The tribes with cheerful homage own Their king and Judah was his throne. 2 Across the deep their journey lay; The deep divides to make them way; Jordan beheld their march, and fled With backward current to his head. 3 The mountains shook like frighted sheep, Like lambs the little hillocks leap! Not Sinai on her base could stand, Conscious of sov'reign power at hand. 4 What pow'r could make the deep divide? Make Jordan backward roll his tide? Why did ye leap, ye little hills And whence the fright that Sinai feels? 5 Let ev'ry mountain, ev'ry flood, Retire and know the approaching God, The King of Israel: see Him here; Tremble, thou earth, adore and fear. 6 He thunders, and all nature mourns, The rock to standing pools he turns; Flints spring with fountains at his word, And fires and seas confess the Lord. Behold the Blind their Sight receive

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #II.CXXXVII (1766) Topics: Gospel attested by Miracles Lyrics: 1 Behold the Blind their Sight receive; Behold the Dead awake and live; The Dumb speak Wonders; and the Lame Leap like the Hart, and bless his Name. 2 Thus doth th' Eternal Spirit own And seal the Mission of the Son; The Father vindicates his Cause, While he hangs bleeding on the Cross. 3 He dies; the Heav'ns in Mourning stood; He rises, and appears a God: Behold the Lord ascending high, No more to bleed, no more to die. 4 Hence, and for ever, from my Heart I bid my Doubts and Fears depart And to those Hands my Soul resign, Which bear Credentials so divine.
