I cannot tell why he whom angels worship

Author: W. Y. Fullerton (1857-1932) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #194 (1987) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Topics: God, Saviour Returning and Triumphant Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should set his love upon the sons of men, or why as shepherd he should seek the wanderers to bring them back, they know not how nor when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured; and so the saviour, saviour of the world, has come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy-laden; for still the saviour of the world, is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendour when he the saviour, saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. But this I know, the skies will sound his praises, ten thousand thousand human voices sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth, will answer, 'At last the saviour, saviour of the world is king!' A Little Child the Saviour Came

Author: William Robertson Hymnal: Voices United #445 (1996) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Jesus Christ Saviour Lyrics: 1 A little child the Saviour came, the mighty God was still his name, and angels worshipped as he lay the helpless infant of a day. 2 He who, a little child, began the life divine to show God's plan proclaims from heaven the message free, "Let little children come to me." 3 We bring them now, and in your name the saving love of Christ proclaim. Through living water, grace endow; baptize them with your Spirit now. 4 O God, who by an infant's tongue can hear your perfect glory sung, may these with all the heavenly throng, praise you: Creator, Spirit, Son. Bearing thus our sinful load. 3 Jesus is the children's Saviour! Suffer them, he says, to come; If they seek his face and favor, They shall share his heavenly home. Risen Saviour! Son of God, eternal saviour

Author: S. T. C. Lowry (1855-1932) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #102 (1987) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: God, Saviour Growing, Teaching, Serving Lyrics: 1 Son of God, eternal saviour, source of life and truth and grace; Son of Man whose birth among us hallows all our human race: Christ our head, for all your people you have never ceased to plead; fill us with your love and pity, heal our wrongs, and help our need. 2 Lord, as you have lived for others, so may we for others live; freely have your gifts been granted, freely may your servants give: yours the gold and yours the silver, all the wealth of sea and land; we but stewards of your riches held in trust at your command. 3 Come, O Christ, and reign among us, king of Love, and prince of peace; hush the storm of strife and passion, bid its cruel discords cease: by your patient years of toiling, by your silent hours of pain, quench our fevered thirst of pleasure, shame our selfish greed for gain. 4 Son of God, eternal saviour, source of life and truth and grace; Son of Man, whose birth among us hallows all our human race: you have prayed and you have purposed that your people shall be one; grant to us our hope’s fulfilment — here on earth your will be done! Hark, the glad sound, the Saviour comes

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #105 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Advent of the Saviour Lyrics: 1 Hark, the glad sound! the Saviour comes, The Saviour promis'd long! Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne, And ev'ry voice a song. 2 On him the Spirit, largely pour'd, Exerts his sacred fire; Wisdom, and might, and zeal, and love, His holy breast inspire. 3 He comes the pris'ners to release, In Satan's bondage held: The gates of brass before him burst, The iron fetters yield. 4 He comes, from thickest films of vice To clear the mental ray; And on the eyes, oppress'd with night, To pour celestial day. 5 He comes, the broken heart to bind, The bleeding soul to cure, And, with the treasures of his grace T' enrich the humble poor. 6 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace! Thy welcome shall proclaim; And heav'n's eternal arches ring With thy beloved name.
