Let GOD, the GOD of Battle, rise

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXVIII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Ascension Lyrics: 1 Let GOD, the GOD of Battle, rise, And scatter his presumptuous Foes; Let shameful Rout their Host surprise, Who spitefully his Pow'r oppose. 2 As Smoke in Tempests Rage is lost, Or Wax into the Furnace cast; So let their sacrilegious Host, Before his wrathful Presence waste. 3 But let the Servants of his Will His Favour's gentle Beams enjoy; Their upright Hearts let Gladness fill, And chearful Songs their Tongues employ. 4 To him your Voice in Anthems raise; JEHOVAH's awful Name he bears: In him rejoice, extol his Praise, Who rides upon high-rolling Spheres. 5 Him, from his Empire of the Skies, To this low World Compassion draws, The Orphan's Claim to patronize, And judge the injur'd Widow's Cause. 6 'Tis GOD, who from a foreign Soil, Restores poor Exiles to their Home; Makes Captives free; and fruitless Toil, Their proud Oppressors righteous Doom. 7 'Twas so of old, when thou didst lead In Person, LORD, our Armies forth; Strange Terrors thro' the Desart spread, Convulsions shook th'astonish'd Earth. 8 The breaking Clouds did Rain distil, And Heav'n's high Arches shook with Fear, How then should Sinai's humble Hill, Of Israel's GOD, the Presence bear? 9 Thy Hand, at famish'd Earth's Complaint, Reliev'd her from celestial Stores; And, when thy Heritage was faint, Assuag'd the Drought with plenteous Show'rs. 10 Where Savages had rag'd before, At Ease thou mad'st our Tribes reside, And in the Desert, for the Poor Thy gen'rous Bounty did provide. Part II 11 Thou gav'st the Word, we sallied forth, And in that pow'rful Word o'ercame; Whilst Virgin-troops, with Songs of Mirth, In State our Conquests did proclaim. 12 Vast Armies, by such Gen'rals led, As yet had ne'er receiv'd a Foil, Forsook their Camp with sudden Dread, And to our Women left the Spoil. 13 Tho' Egypt's Drudges you have been, Your Army's Wings shall shine as bright As Doves in golden Sunshine seen, Or silver'd o'er with paler Light. 14 'Twas so, when GOD's almighty Hand O'er scatter'd Kings the Conquest won; Our Troops, drawn up on Jordan's Strand, High Salmon's glitt'ring Snow outshone. 15 From thence to Jordan's farther Coast, And Bashan's Hill, we did advance: No more her Height shall Bashan boast, But that she's GOD's Inheritance. 16 But wherefore (tho' the Honour's great) Should this, O Mountain, swell your Pride? For Sion is his chosen Seat, Where he forever will reside. 17 His Chariot's numberless; his Pow'rs Are heav'nly Hosts, that wait His Will; His Presence now fills Sion's Tow'rs, As once it honour'd Sinai's Hill. 18 Ascending high, in Triumph, thou Captivity hast Captive led; And on thy People didst bestow The Spoil of Armies, once their Dread. 19 Ev'n Rebels shall partake thy Grace, And humble Proselytes repair, To worship at thy Dwelling Place, And all the World pay Homage there. 20 For Benefits each Day bestow'd, Be daily his great Name ador'd; Who is our Saviour, and our GOD, Of Life and Death the Sov'reign LORD. 21 But Justice for His harden'd Foes, Proportion'd Vengeance hath decreed, To wound the hoary Head of those, Who in presumptuous Crimes proceed. 22 The LORD hath thus in Thunder spoke, "As I subdu'd prous Bashan's King, "Once more I'll break my People's Yoke, "And from the Deep my Servants bring: 23 "Their Feet shall with a crimson Flood "Of slaughter'd Foes be cover'd o'er; "Nor Earth receive such impious Blood, "But leave for Dogs th' unhallow'd Gore." Part III 24 When, marching to thy blest Abode, The wond'rous Multitude survey'd The pompous State of Thee, O GOD, In Robes of Majesty array'd. 25 Sweet-singing Levites led the Van, Loud Instruments brought up the Rear, Between both Troops, a Virgin Train With Voice and Timbrel charm'd the Ear. 26 This was the Burden of their Song, "In full Assemblies bless the LORD, "All who to Israel's Tribes belong, "The GOD of Israel's Praise record." 27 Nor little Benjamin alone From neighb'ring Bounds did there attend, Nor only Judah's nearer Throne, Her Counsellors in State did send. 28 But Zebulon's remoter Seat, And Napthli's more distant Coast, (The grand Procession to complete) Sent up their Tribes, a princely Host. 29 Thus GOD, to Strength and Union brought Our Tribes, at Strife till that blest Hour: This Work, which Thou, O GOD, hast wrought, Confirm with fresh Recruits of Pow'r. 30 To visit Salem, LORD, descend And Sion, thy terrestrial Throne; Where Kings with Presents shall attend, And Thee with offer'd Crowns attone. 31 Break down the Spear-Mens Ranks, who threat Like pamper'd Herds of savage Might, Their silver-armour'd Chiefs defeat, Who in destructive War delight. 32 Egypt shall then to GOD stretch forth Her Hands, and Afric Homage bring: 32 The scatter'd Kingdoms of the Earth, Their common Sov'reigns Praises sing; 33 Who, mounted on the loftiest Sphere Of antient Heav'n, sublimely rides; From whence his dreadful Voice we hear, Like that of warring Winds and Tides. 34 Ascribe the Pow'r to GOD most high; Of humble Israel he takes Care; Whose Strength, from out the dusky Sky, Darts shining Terrors thro' the Air. 35 How dreadful are the sacred Courts, Where GOD has fix'd his earthly Throne! His Strength his feeble Saints supports: Praise ye the LORD, our GOD alone. Scripture: Psalm 68 Languages: English Tune Title: [Let God, the God of Battle, rise]

LORD, hear my Pray'r, and to my Cry

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXLIII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Prophetical Curses against the Enemies and Persecutors of the Chruch Lyrics: 1 LORD, hear my Pray'r, and to my Cry Thy wonted Audience lend; In thy accustom'd Faith and Truth, A gracious Answer send, Nor to thy Justice bring Thy servant strictly to be try'd; For no frail mortal Man Can in thy Sight be justify'd, 2 The spiteful Foe pursues my Life, Whose Comforts all are fled; He drives me into Caves as dark As Mansions of the Dead. My Spirit is o'erwhelm'd, And therefore sinks within my Breast; My Heart grows desolate, With heavy Woes too much oppress'd. 3 I call to mind the Days of old, And Wonders thou hast wrought, My former Dangers and Escapes Employ my musing Thought. To thee my in humble Pray'r, My Hands I fervently stretch out; My Soul for Comfort thirsts, Like Land oppress'd with constant Drought. 4 Hear me with Speed, my Spirit fails, Thy Face no longer hide; Lest I become forlorn, like them That in the Grave reside. Thy Kindness let me hear, Whose Trust on thee alone depends; Teach me thy perfect Way, For still my Soul to thee ascends. 5 Do thou, O LORD, from all my Foes, Preserve, and set me free; A safe Retreat against their Rage, My Soul implores from thee. Thy righteous Will, O GOD, Instruct me ever to obey; Let thy good Spirit lead And keep my Soul in thy right Way. 6 Oh, for the sake of thy great Name, Revive my drooping Heart: For thy Truth's sake, to me distress'd, Thy promis'd Aid impart. In Pity to my Grief, Do thou reduce my Foes to shame; Slay them that vex my Soul, Devoted to thy holy Name. Scripture: Psalm 143 Languages: English Tune Title: [Lord, hear my Pray'r, and to my Cry]

LORD, let thy just Decrees the King

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Coming and Government Lyrics: 1 LORD, let thy just Decrees the King In all his Ways direct; And let his Son, throughout his Reign, Thy righteous Laws respect. So shall he still thy People judge, With pure and upright Mind; Whilst all the helpless Poor shall him, Their just Protector find. 2 Then Hills and Mountains shall bring forth, The happy Fruits of Peace; Which all the Land shall own to be, The work of Righteousness; Whilst he the poor and needy Race. Shall rule with gentle Sway, And from their humble Necks, shall take Oppressive Yoaks away. 3 In ev'ry Heart, thy awful Fear Shall then be rooted fast, As long as Sun and Moon endure, Or Time itself shall last. He shall descend like Rain, that chears The Meadow's second Birth; Or like war Show'rs, whose gentle Drops, Refresh the thirsty Earth. 4 In his blest Days the Just and Good Shall be with Favour crown'd; The happy Land shall every where With endless Peace abound. His uncontroul'd Dominion shall From Sea to Sea extend; Begin at proud Euphrates' Stream, At Nature's Limits end. 5 To him the Savage Nations round, Shall bow their servile Heads; His vanquish'd Foes shall lick the Dust Where he his Conquest spreads. The Kings of Tarshish, and the Isles, Shall costly Presents bring; From spicy Sheba Gifts shall come, And wealthy Saba's King. 6 To him shall ev'ry King on Earth His humble Homage pay; And diff'ring Nations gladly join, To own his righteous Sway. For he shall set the needy free, When they for Succour cry; Shall save the Helpless, and the Poor, And all their Wants supply. Part II 7 His Providence, for needy Souls Shall due Supplies prepare; And over their defenceless Lives, Shall watch with tender Care. He shall preserve and keep their Souls From Fraud and Rapine free; And in his Sight, their guiltless Blood Of mighty Price shall be. 8 Therefore shall GOD his Life and Reign To many Years extend; Whilst Eastern Princes Tribute pay, And golden Presents send. For him shall constant Pray'rs be made, Thro' all his prosp'rous Days; His just Dominion shall afford A lasting Theme of Praise. 9 Of useful Grain thro' all the Land, Great Plenty shall appear; A Handful sown on Mountain Tops, A mighty Crop shall bear. Its Fruit, like Cedars shook by Winds, A rattling Noise shall yield; The City too shall thrive, and vie For Plenty, with the Field. 10 The Mem'ry of his glorious Name, Thro' endless Years shall run; His spotless Fame shall shine as bright And lasting as the Sun. In him the Nations of the Earth Shall be completely blest, And his unbounded Happiness By ev'ry Tongue confest. 11 Then bless'd be GOD, the mighty LORD, The GOD whom Israel fears; Who only wond'rous in his Works, Beyond Compare, appears. Let Earth be with His Glory fill'd; Forever bless his Name; Whilst to his Praise the list'ning World, Their glad Assent proclaim. Scripture: Psalm 72 Languages: English Tune Title: [Lord, let thy just Decrees the King]

Lord save me, for thy glorious Name

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LIV (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 LORD save me, for thy glorious Name, In thy resistless Strength appear To judge my Cause, and to my Pray'r, Vouchsafe to lend a gracious Ear: Mere Strangers whom I never wrong'd, Against my Safety have design'd, And cruel Men that fear no GOD, To take my Soul have close combin'd. 2 But GOD takes part with all my Friends, And he's indeed the surest Guard; The GOD of Truth shall on my Foes Pour down their Falshood's just Reward. Whilst I my grateful Off'rings bring, And sacrifice with grateful Joy, And in his Praise my Time to come. With holy Extacy employ. 3 From dreadful Danger and Distress, The LORD of Life hath set me free: And through his Strength, of all my Foes, The just Destruction I shall see. First and Second Adam

Author: Watts Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #XXIV (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Patriarchal Types, and Prophecies of Christ First Line: Lord, what was man, when made at first Lyrics: 1 Lord, what was man, when made at first, Adam, the offspring of the dust, That thou should'st set him and his race, But just below an Angel's place? 2 That thou should'st raise his nature so, And make him lord of all below; Make ev'ry beast and bird submit, And lay the fishes at his feet. 3 But O! what brighter glories wait To crown the second Adam's state? What honors shall thy son adorn; Who condescended to be born? 4 See him below his angels made; See him in dust among the dead, To save a ruin'd world from sin; But he shall reign with pow'r divine. 5 The world to come, redeem'd from all The mis'ries that attend the fall, New made and glorious shall submit At our exalted Saviour's feet. Lord, with thy wonted mercy hear

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #V (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Lord, with thy wonted Mercy hear, The Voice of my Distress; To my complaint bow down then Ear, And all my Wrongs redress. To thee my King and God, I will direct my mournful Cry, Accept my secret Pray'r, For on thee alone rely. 2 Soon as the Morn with cheerful Light, Shall paint the floating Skies, To thee I will my Pray'r address; To thee my Voice shall rise: Ev'n when the early Dawn, Shall shoot abroad it's timed Ray, To thee i will look up, To thee my GOD, devoutly pray. 3 In Men to Folly still inclin'd, The LORD takes not Delight; Nor will permit the sinful wretch, To stand before his Sight. The Wrongs which I sustain, The GOD of Truth will not approve, Who from his holy Place, Will all Unrighteousness remove. 4 The stubborn Fool, who still with Scorn, Rejects his proffer'd Grace, He will reject with just Disdain, And banish from his Face; Those who unrighteous Things, Do still with wicked Hearts pursue, His Vengeance will not leave, To stand unpunish'd in his View. Part 2d: 5. The sland'ring Tongue, oh GOD of Truth! Thou surely wilt destroy; In lying Lips and faithless Hearts, Thy Spirit finds no Joy; So likewise dost thou hate, The Man who is to Blood inclin'd; And his deceitful Race, From thee shall no Protection find. 6 But when thy heav'nly Grace, shall me To thy blest courts restore, On thee I'll fix my longing Eyes, And humbly there adore; Ev'n at thy Temple Gate, With constant Zeal I will attend, And thence my Pray'r direct, To GOD, on whom I still depend. 7 Conduct me by thy righteous Laws, To me in mercy show, That sacred path of Truth, oh Lord! In which I ought to go. My Foes stand watching round, In Hopes my sudden Fall to see; Oh guard my heedless Steps, And from their Snares deliver me. 8 Their Mouths vent nothing but Deceit, To Slander still inclin'd; Their wicked Hearts against my Life, Have treach'rously design'd; Their Throat is like a Grave, That ever yawning to devour; They flatter with their Tongue, And still exult in lawless Pow'r. 9 In their own Counsels let them fall, By Loads of Guilt opprest; And as they others would have wrong'd, So let them be distrest. For they against thy Laws, Have ever harden'd Rebels been, They daily thee provok'd, By still persisting in their Sin. 10 But let all those, who trust in thee, Shout with triumphant Joy; And all their Hours in Songs of praise, Delightfully employ. Let those whom thou preserv'st, Thy Goodness all abroad proclaim; And tell what Bliss awaits, Those who revere thy holy Name. 11 To righteous men, the bounteous LORD, His Blessing will impart; Protection he affords to all, Who have an upright Heart. The LORD to all his Saints, His Grace and Favour will extend; And from approaching Harm, Their Lives as with a Shield defend. Scripture: Psalm 5 Languages: English Tune Title: [Lord, with thy wonted mercy hear]

My GOD! my GOD! why leav'st thou me

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Of Jesus Christ, concerning his Humiliation and Exultation Lyrics: 1 My GOD! my GOD! why leavst thou me, When I with Anguish call on thee? Why dost thou me neglect, And my loud Pray'r reject? All Day, but all the day in vain, To thee, O LORD, do I complain: All Night have I implor'd Thy Help to me restor'd. 3 Yet thou, O LORD, art ever just, Relieving those, who in thee trust; Therefore shalt Israel raise To thee, continual Praise: On Thee our Ancestors rely'd, And in thy Strength their Foes defy'd; To thee their Pray'rs address'd, And with Success were bless'd. of Innocence oppress'd; 3 Thy sure Deliv'rance, LORD, they found, When Dangers gather'd thickest round; Thine Ears their Cries receiv'd, And they were soon reliev'd; But I, like none of human Birth, Am made the scoffing Rabble's Mirth; Ev'n like a Reptile base, They hold me in Disgrace. Part II 4 My Agonies, the gazing Crowd, Survey with Scorn and Laughter loud, They mock whilst I complain, And thus my Woes disdain: "He boasted, he was Heav'n's Delight, "Let GOD relieve his Favourite; "Let him Assistance send, "His Servant to defend. 5 But thou didst from my Mother's Womb, Make me a living Offspring come; Thy Care thou didst extend, Me helpless to defend: My Youth thou didst from Danger shield, And Guardian-like Protection yield; In thee I will confide, For thou wert still my Guide. 6 Withdraw not then, O GOD, Most high! Thy Aid, when Trouble is so nigh: Do thou that Help extend, On which I still depend. High-pamper'd Bulls, a frowning Throng, From Basan's Forest, fierce and strong, Prepare with growing Rage, Against me to engage. 7 They gape on me, and to my Fears, Each Mouth, a yawning Grave appears; Wide open to devour My Soul, when in their Pow'r: The desart Lion's savage Roar, Could not increase my Horrors more. In Compact close combin'd, They have my Fall design'd. Part III 8 My Joints are rack'd, and out of Frame; My Heart like Wax before the Flame. Within my Bosom glows; My Blood like Water flows: My Strength is parch'd' like Potter's Clay, My fault'ring Tongue forgets to play; My Soul all Hope resigns, And to the Grave declines. 9 Like Blood-hounds, they assembled round, My harmless Hands and Feet they wound; And through my constant Pain, I languish and complain; That all my Bones may well be told; Yet this as Pastime they behold. And still their Pleasure shew, At each Increase of Woe. 10 As Spoil, my Garments they divide: By Lots their Portions they decide; Therefore thy Arm extend, And kind Protection send. From their sharp Sword defend thou me, And let my Life from Danger free; Nor leave my Soul o'erpower'd, By Dogs to be devour'd. 11 To me, O GOD! Assistance send, My Life from Lions fierce defend; As once thy Strength prevail'd, When Unicorns assail'd, Then to my Brethren I'll proclaim The Triumphs of thy holy Name; And to the Saints repair, Thy Glory to declare. 12 "Praise ye the LORD in Songs divine, "Ye num'rous Race of Israel's Line; "To him with Fervour pray, "And low Obeisance pay: "His People he hath ne'er disdain'd, "Or turn'd his Face when they complain'd; "But to their humble Pray'r, "Doth lend a gracious Ear. 13 Thus in thy Courts, thy Name I'll bless, And in loud Songs my Thanks express; And to thy Saints declare, Thy providential Care. The meek Companions of my Grief, Shall at my Table find Relief; And all who seek thy Face, Shall find refreshing Grace. 14 Then shall the World their Homage pay, To GOD, and his Commands obey; His Pow'r they shall confess, And Pray'rs to him address. From Kings Submission to receive, In his supreme Prerogative, Who doth the Worlds sustain; And over all Things reign. 15 The Rich his Bounty must confess, The Poor their gen'rous Patron bless; To him they all resort, For Succour and Support: Then shall a Race exalt his Name, And to their Heirs his Truth proclaim, "Till Heav'n and Earth combin'd, Are all to GOD resign'd. Scripture: Psalm 22 Languages: English Tune Title: [My God! my God! why leav'st thou me]

No Glory, LORD, we claim

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXV (1767) Topics: Prophecies Prophetical Curses against the Enemies and Persecutors of the Chruch Lyrics: 1 No Glory, LORD, we claim; But to thy sacred Name Be all the Praise addressed; Thou, who dost ever prove The GOD of Truth an dLOVE, Hath us in Mercy blessed. 2 Why should the Heathen say, "Where doth their GOD delay? "Why are they not released?" Our GOD, who dwells on high, The Sov'reign of the Sky, Hath done whate'er him pleased. 3 Their golden Idol stands, The Work of mortal Hands, It's Mouth no Words expressing; It hath both Eyes and Ears, Yet neither sees nor hears; It's Nose no Smell possessing. 4 Its Hands but useless prove, It's Feet can never move, To one fix'd Place confined; Though Idols senseless are, As stupid they appear, Who them for Gods designed. 5 Israel, on GOD depend, Who only can defend, And succour the Distressed; Priests, Levites, him alone Your GOD and Saviour own; To him be Praise addressed. 6 All ye that fear the LORD, Trust in his holy Word, On him with Faith relying: 'Tis he doth Comfort yield, He is your Help and Shield, Your Wants he's still supplying. 7 We have his Goodness seen, And GOD hath mindful been, Of Israel; he hath blessed Priest, Levites, great and small, His Proselytes, ev'n all, Who hath his Name confessed. 8 For you, and for your Heirs, His Blessing he prepares, Who made both Earth and Heaven; The Skies are all his own, This World he fran'd alone, Which he to us hath given. 9 The Dead, O righteous LORD! To thee no Praise afford, In silent Shades confined: But we will evermore, Thy glorious Name adore, With Hearts to thee resigned. Scripture: Psalm 115 Languages: English Tune Title: [No Glory, Lord, we claim]
