Lord, what was man when made at first

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #92 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 Lord, what was man when made at first, Adam the offspring of the dust, That thou should'st set him and his race But just below an angel's place? 2 That thou should'st raise his nature so, And make him lord of all below; Make every beast and bird submit, And lay the fishes at his feet? 3 But, O, what brighter glories wait To crown the second Adam's state! What honours shall thy Son adorn, Who condescended to be born! 4 See him below his angels made, See him in dust amongst the dead, To save a ruin'd world from sin; But he shall reign with power divine. 5 The world to come, redeem'd from all The miseries that attend the fall, New-made, and glorious, shall submit At our exalted Saviour's feet.

Dead be my heart to all below

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #93 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 Dead be my heart to all below, To mortal joys and mortal cares; To sensual bliss that charms us so, Be dark, mine eyes, and deaf my ears. 2 Lord, I renounce my carnal taste Of the fair fruit that sinners prize; Their paradise shall never waste One thought of mine, but to despise. 3 All earthly joy are overweigh'd With mountains of vexatious care; And where's the sweet that is not laid A bait to some destructive snare? 4 Begone, for ever, mortal things! Thou mighty mole-hill, earth, farewell Angels aspire of lofty wings, And leave the globe for ants to dwell. 5 Come, heaven, and fill my vast desires, My soul pursues the sovereign good; She was all made of heavenly fires, Nor can she live on meaner food.

Lord, what a thoughtless wretch was I

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #94 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 Lord, what a thoughtless wretch was I, To mourn, and murmur, and repine To see the wicked plac'd on high, In pride and robes of honour shine! 2 But oh their end, their dreadful end! Thy sanctuary taught me so; On slippery rocks I see them stand, And fiery billows roll below. 3 Now let them boast how tall they rise, I'll never envy them again: There they may stand with haughty eyes, Till they plunge deep in endless pain. 4 Their fancied joys, how fast they flee! Just like a dream when man awakes; Their songs of softest harmony Are but a preface to their plagues. 5 Now I esteem their mirth and wine Too dear to purchase with my blood; Lord, 'tis enough that thou art mine, My life, my portion, and my God.

When in the light of faith divine

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #95 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 When in the light of faith divine We look on things below, Honour, and gold, and sensual joy, How vain and dangerous too! 2 Honour's a puff of noisy breath; Yet men expose their blood, And venture everlasting death, To gain that airy good. 3 Whilst others starve the nobler mind, And feed on shining dust, They rob the serpent of his food T' indulge a sordid lust. 4 The pleasures that allure our sense Are dangerous snares to souls; There's but a drop of flattering sweet, And dash'd with bitter bowls. 5 God is mine all-sufficient good, My portion and my choice; In him my vast desires are fill'd, And all my powers rejoice. 6 In vain the world accosts my ear, And tempts my heart anew; I cannot buy your bliss so dear, Nor part with heaven for you.

Why should this earth delight us so?

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #96 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 Why should this earth delight us so? Why should we fix our eyes On these low grounds where sorrows grow, And every pleasure dies? 2 While time his sharpest teeth prepares Our comforts to devour, There is a land above the stars, And joys above his power. 3 Nature shall be dissolv'd and die, The sun must end his race, The earth and sea for ever fly Before my Saviour's face. 4 When will that glorious morning rise? When the last trumpet sound, And call the nations to the skies, From underneath the ground?

What are possessions, fame, and power

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #97 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 What are possessions, fame, and power The boasted splendour of the great? What gold, which dazzled eyes adore, And seek with endless toils and sweat? 2 Express their charms, declare their use, That we their merits may descry, Tell us what good they can produce, Or what important wants supply. 3 If, wounded with the sense of sin, To them for pardon we should pray, Will they restore our peace within, And wash our guilty stains away? 4 Can they celestial life inspire, Nature with power divine renew, With pure and sacred transports fire Our bosom, and our lust subdue? 5 When with the pangs of death we strive, And yield all comforts here for lost, Will they support us, will they give Kind succour, when we need it most? 6 When at th' Almighty's awful bar To hear our final doom we stand, Can they incline the Judge to spare, Or wrest the vengeance from his hand? 7 Can they protect us from despair, From the dark reign of death and hell, Crown us with bliss, and throne us where The just, in joys immortal, dwell? 8 Sinners, your idols we despise, If these reliefs they cannot grant; Why should we such delusions prize, And pine in everlasting want?

Vain man, on foolish pleasures bent

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #98 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man Lyrics: 1 Vain man, on foolish pleasures bent, Prepares for his own punishment; What pains, what loathsome maladies From luxury and lust arise! 2 The drunkard feels his vitals waste, Yet drowns his health to please his taste; Till all his active powers are lost, And fainting life draws near the dust. 3 The glutton groans and loathes to eat, His soul abhors delicious meat: Nature, with heavy loads opprest, Would yield to death to be releas'd. 4 Then how the frighted sinners fly To God for help with earnest cry! He hears their groans, prolongs their breath, And saves them from approaching death. 5 O may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! And let their thankful offerings prove How they adore their Maker's love.

Jehovah's image brightly shone

Author: W. Garner Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #373 (1873) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Christian System Creation and Fall of Man Lyrics: 1 Jehovah's image brightly shone In Eden's lovely pair, And oft before his gracious throne, They bowed in praise and prayer. 2 With rectitude, as with a robe, Their spotless souls were dressed, With peace abounding, and with joy, They were divinely blessed. 3 No self-reproach, no slavish dread Disturbed their peace within; No frowning storm their path o'erspread, While undefiled with sin. 4 Thus souls renewed by saving grace-- Whose sins have been forgiven, Behold the smiles of Jesus' face, And feel an inward heaven.

What is the thing of greatest price

Author: Montgomery Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #374 (1873) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Christian System Creation and Fall of Man Lyrics: 1 What is the thing of greatest price, The whole creation round?-- That which was lost in Paradise, That which in Christ is found. 2 The soul of man--Jehovah's breath-- That keeps two worlds at strife; Hell moves beneath to work its death, Heaven stoops to give it life. 3 And is this treasure borne below, In earthen vessels frail? Can non its utmost value know, 'Till flesh and spirit fail? 4 Then let us gather round the cross, That knowledge to obtain; Not by the soul's eternal loss, But everlasting gain. Scripture: Isaiah 66:2
