O thou who the Shepherd of Israel art

Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 11 hymnals Topics: Israel In the Desert Lyrics: 1 O thou who the Shepherd of Israel art, Give ear to our pray'r and thy favor impart; Thou leader of Joseph, thou guide of his way, 'Mid cherubim dwelling, thy glory display. 2 In Ephraim's, Manasseh's and Benjamin's sight, O come thou and save us; awake in thy might. O God, give us favor, restore to thy grace; And then we shall live in the light of thy face. 3 From Egypt's dark border a vine thou didst take; Destroying the heathen didst room for it make. Where planted it grew at thy sov'reign command, With roots deeply set and boughs filling the land. 4 The axe hews it down; it is burned in the fire; They perish, rebuked in thy terrible ire. O lay then thy hand on the Man of thy might, The Son of Man made to stand strong in thy sight. 5 No more shall we wander, delighting in shame; Revive us, O Lord, we will call on thy Name. O Lord God of Hosts, us restore to thy grace, And then we shall live in the light of thy face. Amen. Scripture: Psalm 80:1-3 Used With Tune: JOANNA Text Sources: Associate Reformed Presbyterian Psalter, 1931

When Israel Out of Egypt Went

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: Israel in the Desert Lyrics: 1 When Israel out of Egypt went, From people of a speech unknown, The Lord among His people dwelt, And there He set His royal throne. 2 The sea behold and fled away, The Jordan's waters backward turned, The lofty mountains and the hills With trembling awe our God discerned. 3 What aileth thee, O troubled sea? Thou Jordan, why thy riven tide? Ye mountains and ye little hills, Why thus dismayed on every side? 4 O tremble, earth, before the Lord, In presence of Jehovah fear, Beneath whose touch the flinty rock Became a fount of waters clear. Scripture: Psalm 114 Used With Tune: ABSCHIED

Deep in the shadows of the past

Author: Brian A. Wren, 1936- Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Desert / Wilderness Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads traveled with their God across the desert sands. The dawning hope of humankind by them was sensed and shown: a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods, they met a mystery, invisible, without a name: "I AM WHAT I WILL BE"; and by their tents, around their fires in story, song and law, they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Exodus to Pentecost the promise changed and grew, while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, or with their letters and laments, their prophecy and praise, recovered, kindled, and expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders long ago, who sifted, copied and preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its story yet our promise, strength and call, the model of emerging faith, alive with hope for all. Scripture: Genesis 12:1-5 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

Let mortal tongues attempt to sing

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 14 hymnals Topics: Desertion and distress of soul; Backsliding soul in distress and desertion; Distress of soul, or backsliding and desertion Lyrics: Let mortal tongues attempt to sing The wars of heav'n, when Michael stood Chief general of th' Eternal King, And fought the battles of our God. Against the dragon and his host The armies of the Lord prevail: In vain they rage, in vain they boast, Their courage sinks, their weapons fail. Down to the earth was Satan thrown, Down to the earth his legions fell; Then was the trump of triumph blown, And shook the dreadful deeps of hell. Now is the hour of darkness past, Christ has assum'd his reigning power; Behold the great accuser cast Down from the skies to rise no more. 'Twas by thy blood, immortal Lamb, Thine armies trod the tempter down; 'Twas by thy word and powerful name They gain'd the battle and renown. Rejoice, ye heav'ns; let every star Shine with new glories round the sky; Saints, while ye sing the heav'nly war, Raise your Deliv'rer's name on high. Scripture: Revelation 12:7
