Support for the afflicted and tempted Soul

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's Imitation of the Psalms of David #99 (1790) Topics: Prosperity dangerous; Prosperity dangerous First Line: O God, my refuge, hear my cries Lyrics: 1 O God, my refuge, hear my cries, Behold my flowing tears, For earth and hell my hurt devise, And triumph in my fears. 2 Their rage is level'd at my life, My soul with guilt they load, And fill my thoughts with inward strife, To shake my hope in God. 3 With inward pains my heart-strings wound, I groan with every breath; Horror and fear beset me round Amongst the shades of death. 4 O were I like a feather'd dove, And innocence had wings, I'd fly, and make a long remove From all these restless things. 5 Let me to some wild desert go, And find a peaceful home, Where storms of malice never blow, Temptations never come. 7 Vain hopes, and vain inventions all To 'scape the rage of hell! The mighty God, on whom I call, Can save me here as well. Pause. 7 By morning light I'll seek his face, At noon repeat my cry, The night shall hear me ask his grace, Nor will he long deny. 8 God shall preserve my soul from fear, Or shield me when afraid; Ten thousand angels must appear If he command their aid. 9 I cast my burdens on the Lord, The Lord sustains them all; My courage rests upon his word, That saints shall never fall. 10 My highest hopes shall not be vain, My lips shall spread his praise; While cruel and deceitful men, Scarce live out half their days. Scripture: Psalm 55:1-8 Languages: English

Glad was my heart to hear

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #100 (1854) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Church its peace and prosperity Lyrics: Glad was my heart to hear My old companions say, Come,--in the House of God appear, For 'tis an holy day. Our willing feet shall stand Within the temple-door, While young and old in many a band Shall throng the sacred floor. Thither the tribes repair, Where all are wont to meet, And joyful in the House of Prayer Bend at the Mercy-seat. Pray for Jerusalem, The city of our God; The Lord from Heaven be kind to them That love the dear abode. Within these walls may peace And harmony be found: Zion, in all thy palaces, Prosperity abound. 104 God scorns not humble things; These, though the proud despise, The children of the King of kings, Are training for the skies. May none who thus are taught, From glory be cast down, But all through faith and patience brought To an eternal crown. For friends and brethren dear, Our prayer shall never cease, Oft as they meet for worship here, God send his people peace. Scripture: Psalm 22 Languages: English

Let sinners take their course

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #100 (1786) Topics: Prosperity dangerous; Prosperity dangerous Lyrics: 1 Let sinners take their course, And chuse the road to death; But in the worship of my God I'll spend my daily breath. 2 My thoughts address his throne, When morning brings the light; I'll seek his blessing every noon, And pay my vows at night. 3 Thou wilt regard my cries, O my eternal God, While sinners perish in surprise Beneath thine angry rod. 4 Because they dwell at ease, And no sad changes feel, They neither fear nor trust thy name, Nor learn to do thy will. 5 But I with all my cares Will lean upon the Lord; I'll cast my burdens on his arm, And rest upon his word. 6 His arm shall well sustain The children of his love; The ground on which their safety stands, No earthly power can move. Governing Power and Goodness; or, Our Grace tried by Afflictions

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #114 (1786) Topics: Nation's prosperity; Nation's prosperity First Line: Sing, all the nations to the Lord Lyrics: 1 Sing, all ye nations to the Lord, Sing with a joyful noise; With melody of sound record His honours and your joys. 2 Say to the Power that form'd the sky, "How terrible art thou! "Sinners before thy presence fly, "Or at thy feet they bow." 3 [Come see the wonders of our God, How glorious are his ways? In Moses hand he puts his rod, And clave the frighted seas. 4 He made the ebbing channel dry, While Israel pass'd the flood; There did the church begin their joy, And triumph in their God.] 5 He rules by his resistless might: Will rebel mortals dare Provoke th’ Eternal to the fight, And tempt that dreadful war. 6 Oh bless our God, and never cease; Ye saints, fulfil his praise; He keeps our life, maintains our peace, And guides our doubtful ways. 7 Lord, thou hast prov'd our suffering souls, To make our graces shine; So silver bears the burning coals, The metal to refine. 8 Through watery deeps and fiery ways We march at thy command, Led to possess the promis'd place By thine unerring hand.
