Psalm 39 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 258 hymnals Topics: Devotion on a sick bed; Health prayed for; Sick-Bed Devotion; Tongue governed; Afflictions submission to them; Funeral psalm; Humility and submission; Man his vanity as mortal; Mortality of man; Patience under afflictions; Pleading without repining; Prudence and zeal; Resignation; Submission to sickness; Vanity of man as mortal; Watchfulness over the tongue First Line: Teach me the measure of my days Lyrics: Teach me the measure of my days, Thou Maker of my frame; I would survey life's narrow space, And learn how frail I am. A span is all that we can boast, An inch or two of time; Man is but vanity and dust In all his flower and prime. See the vain race of mortals move Like shadows o'er the plain; They rage and strive, desire and love, But all the noise is vain. Some walk in honor's gaudy show, Some dig for golden ore; They toil for heirs, they know not who, And straight are seen no more. What should I wish or wait for, then, From creatures earth and dust? They make our expectations vain, And disappoint our trust. Now I forbid my carnal hope, My fond desires recall; I give my mortal interest up, And make my God my all. Scripture: Psalm 39:4-7

Psalm 39 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 99 hymnals Topics: Devotion on a sick bed; Health prayed for; Sick-Bed Devotion; Tongue governed; Afflictions submission to them; Funeral psalm; Humility and submission; Man his vanity as mortal; Mortality of man; Patience under afflictions; Pleading without repining; Prudence and zeal; Resignation; Submission to sickness; Vanity of man as mortal; Watchfulness over the tongue First Line: God of my life, look gently down Lyrics: God of my life, look gently down, Behold the pains I feel; But I am dumb before thy throne, Nor dare dispute thy will. Diseases are thy servants, Lord, They come at thy command; I'll not attempt a murm'ring word Against thy chast'ning hand. Yet I may plead with humble cries, Remove thy sharp rebukes; My strength consumes, my spirit dies, Through thy repeated strokes. Crushed as a moth beneath thy hand, We moulder to the dust; Our feeble powers can ne'er withstand, And all our beauty's lost. [This mortal life decays apace, How soon the bubble's broke! Adam and all his num'rous race Are vanity and smoke.] I'm but a sojourner below, As all my fathers were; May I be well prepared to go, When I the summons hear. But if my life be spared awhile, Before my last remove, Thy praise shall be my business still, And I'll declare thy love. Scripture: Psalm 39:9-13

Lord, how mysterious are thy ways!

Appears in 76 hymnals Topics: Confidence and Resignation Submission to the all-wise Decrees Lyrics: 1 Lord, how mysterious are thy ways! How blind are we! how mean our praise! Thy steps can mortal eyes explore? 'Tis ours to wonder and adore! 2 Thy deep decrees from creature sight Are hid in shades of awful night; Amid the lines, with curious eye, Nor angels minds presume to pry. 3 Great God! I would not ask to see What in futurity shall be: If light and bliss attend my days, Then let my future hours be praise. 4 Is darkness and distress my share, Then let me trust thy guardian care; Enough for me, if love divine At length through every cloud shall shine. 5 Yet this my soul desires to know, Be this my only wish below, "That I am thine!" — This great request Grant, bounteous God, — and I am blest!

Thy people, Lord, have ever found

Appears in 13 hymnals Topics: Confidence and Resignation Submission under Affliction Lyrics: 1 Thy people, Lord, have ever found 'Tis good to bear thy rod; Afflictions make us learn thy law, And live upon our God. 2 This is the comfort we enjoy; When new distress begins, We read thy word, we run thy way, And hate our former sins. 3 Thy judgment, Lord, are always right, Though they may seem severe; The sharpest sufferings we endure Flow from thy faithful care. 4 Before we knew thy chastening rod, Our feet were apt to stray; Now may we learn to keep thy word, Nor wander from thy way.

The Frailty of Life

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Afflictions For sin; Afflictions From God; Afflictions Purpose of; Afflictions Submission under; Christians Pilgrims and Strangers; Death At Hand; Deliverance From Sin; Hope; Humility; Life Brevity and Uncertainty of; Life Sorrowful and Vain; Man Mortal and Frail; Old Age; Patience; Pilgrim Spirit; Prayer Complaint in; Prayer For Deliverance from Trouble; Prayer Pleas in; Pride; Resignation; Riches; Self-Control; Sickness From God; Sickness Prayers under; Vanity Of Men and Riches First Line: With firm resolve I held my peace Lyrics: 1 With firm resolve I held my peace And spake not either bad or good, Lest I should utter sinful thoughts While wicked men before me stood. 2 While I was dumb my grief was stirred, My heart grew hot with thought suppressed; The while I mused the fire increased, Then to the Lord I made request. 3 Make me, O Lord, to know my end, Teach me the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am And turn from pride and sinful ways. 4 My time is nothing in Thy sight, Behold, my days are but a span; yea, truly at his best estate, A breath, a fleeting breath, is man. 5 Man's life is passed in vain desire If troubled years be spent for gain; He knows not whose his wealth shall be, And all his toil is but in vain. 6 And now, O Lord, what wait I for? I have no nope except in Thee; Let not ungodly men reproach, From all transgression set me free. 7 Because Thou didst it I was dumb, I spoke no word of rash complaint; Remove Thy stroke away from me, Beneath Thy chastisement I faint. 8 When Thou for his iniquity Rebukest and correctest man, His beauty is consumed away, How weak his strength, how vain his plan. 9 Lord, hear my prayer, regard my cry, I weep, be Thou my comforter; I am a stranger here below, A pilgrim as my fathers were. 10 O spare me, Lord, avert Thy wrath, Deal gently with me, I implore, That I may yet recover strength Ere I go hence and be no more. Scripture: Psalm 39 Used With Tune: BERA
