God Is Our Refuge and Our Strength

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 25 hymnals Topics: Comfort & Encouragement; Comfort & Encouragement Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and our strength, our ever-present aid, and therefore, though the earth be moved, we will not be afraid though hills into the seas be cast, though foaming waters roar, though all the mighty billows shake the mountains on the shore. 2 A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, the holy place wherein the LORD Most High has his abode. Since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand; for God will hasten to her aid when trouble is at hand. 3 The nations rage, the kingdoms move, but when his voice is heard, earth melts with trembling fear before the thunder of his word. The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. 4 O come and see what wondrous works the hand of God has done; come, see what desolation great he brings beneath the sun. In every corner of the earth he causes wars to cease; the weapons of the strong destroyed, he makes abiding peace. 5 "Be still and know that I am God, the LORD whom all must claim; and every nation of the earth shall magnify my name." The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: NOEL Text Sources: Scottish Psalter, 1650; alt.

Complaint Against the Wicked

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 6 hymnals Topics: Missions Encouragements of First Line: Why standest Thou afar, O Lord Lyrics: 1 Why standest Thou afar, O Lord, Why art Thou hid in trouble's hour? The wicked persecute the poor In haughty pride and reckless pow'r. 2 Let their devices work their fall, For in their shame is all their pride; And while they seek unrighteous gain The Lord of justice is defied. 3 The wicked thinks, in foolish pride, There is no God Who will repay; He has no fear of God or man Because God's judgments long delay. 4 Unmoved by fear of coming doom, On fraud and wickedness intent, With craft he lurks and waits to catch The helpless and the innocent. 5 A lion crouching for his prey, He waits the poor to overthrow; He thinks that God remembers not, Or hides His face and will not know. 6 Arise, O Lord, lift up Thy hand, O God, protect the poor and meek; Why should the proud Thy justice doubt, And words of bold defiance speak? 7 O Lord, Thou wilt indeed requite, The sin and sorrow Thou dost see; The helpless and the fatherless Commit themselves, O Lord, to Thee. 8 Break Thou the pow'r of wicked men And let their works no longer stand; The Lord is King for evermore, Who drove the nations from His land. 9 Lord, Thou hast heard the lowly prayer, The fainting heart Thou wilt restore, The helpless cause Thou wilt maintain, That mortal man may boast no more. Scripture: Psalm 10 Used With Tune: BRIGGS

Wonderful Peace

Author: W. D. Cornell Meter: 12.9.12.9 with refrain Appears in 224 hymnals Topics: Comfort and Encouragement First Line: Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight Refrain First Line: Peace! peace! wonderful peace Lyrics: 1 Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight Rolls a melody sweeter than psalm; In celestial-like strains it unceasingly falls O’er my soul like an infinite calm. Refrain: Peace! peace! wonderful peace, Coming down from the Father above; Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray, In fathomless billows of love. 2 What a treasure I have in this wonderful peace, Buried deep in the heart of my soul; So secure that no power can mine it away, While the years of eternity roll. [Refrain] 3 I am resting tonight in this wonderful peace, Resting sweetly in Jesus’ control; For I’m kept from all danger by night and by day, And His glory is flooding my soul. [Refrain] 4 And I think when I rise to that City of peace, Where the Author of peace I shall see, That one strain of the song which the ransomed will sing, In that heavenly kingdom shall be: [Refrain] 5 O my soul, are you here without comfort or rest, Marching down the rough pathway of time? Make the Savior your friend when the shadows grow dark; Oh, accept this sweet peace so sublime. [Refrain] Used With Tune: WONDERFUL PEACE
