Eleazar Thompson Fitch

1791 - 1871 Person Name: Eleazar Thompson Fitch, 1791-1871 Author of "Lord, at This Closing Hour" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 Fitch, Eleazar Thompson, D.D. Born at New Haven, Jan. 1, 1791, and graduated at Yale College, 1810. In 1817 he was appointed Professor of Divinity in Yale, and retained the Professorship to 1863. Died Jan. 31, 1871. His published works include Sermons, &c. With Dr. Bacon and others he compiled the Connecticut Congregational Psalms & Hymns, 1845, and contributed to it 3 psalm versions and 3 hymns. Of these the following are in use: (1) "Lord, at this closing hour." (Close of Divine Service. ) This is extensively used in America, and is also found in the English Presbyterian Psalms & Hymns, 1867. (2) "The God of Peace, Who from the dead." Person Name: Rev. Joel S. Ives Author of "Consecration Hymn" in Y.P.S.C.E. Hymns of Christian Endeavor 19th Century Ives, a Congregational minister, was a graduate of Yale University. He pastored in Stratford and East Hampton (Chatham), Connecticut, and was secretary of the Connecticut state association of Congregational churches. In July 1892, he was hanged in effigy in Stratford by people opposed to his support of the "blue laws" that mandated Sunday business closures. --www.hymntime.com/tch

Konrad Anton Fleischmann

1812 - 1867 Person Name: K. A. Fleischmann Author of "Ich liebe, Herr, dein Reich" in Evangeliums-Lieder 1 und 2 (Gospel Hymns) Fleischmann, Konrad Anton. (Nuremberg, Bavaria, April 18, 1812--October 15, 1867, Philadelphia). Baptist. Raised a Lutheran, became a Baptist in 1831 in Geneva and began theological studies at Berne. Began Christian work in 1834 and in 1839, came to the United States as a missionary to his fellow Germans. His work took him from New York to Newark, New Jersey, to Reading, Pennsylvania, and, in 1842, to Philadelphia where he established a German Baptist Church. In 1852, the first Conference of German Baptists was held and as a result, Fleischmann began publication of a monthly, and later weekly, paper, Der Sendbote. In 1865 he presided at the first meeting of the General Conference of German Baptists. A picture of Fleischmann is in Cathcart's Baptist Encyclopedia (v.1, p.399). Included in Die Glaubensharfe (Cleveland, 1885), are two translations by Fleischmann. "Ich liebe, Herr, Dein Reich" is a translation of the well-known Dwight text, "I love thy kingdom, Lord," and the other is a German version of "Lord, I hear of showers of blessing," "Herr ich höre, Du willst geben Gnadengüsse gnädiglich." --Deborah Carlton Loftis, DNAH Archives
