My soul, the awful hour will come

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #677 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: God our help in trouble Lyrics: 1 My soul, the awful hour will come, Apace it passeth on, To bear this body to the tomb, And thee to scenes unknown. 2 My heart, long lab'ring with its woes, Shall pant and sink away; And you, my eye-lids, soon shall close On the last glimm'ring ray. 3 Whence in that hour shall I receive A cordial for my pain, When, if earth's monarchs were my friends, Those friends would weep in vain? 4 Great King of nature and of grace! To thee my spirit flies, And opens all its deep distress Before thy pitying eyes. 5 All its desires to thee are known, And ev'ry secret fear; The meaning of each broken groan Well notic'd by thine ear. 6 O fix me by that mighty pow'r, Which to such love belongs, Where darkness veils the eyes no more, And groans are chang'd to songs.

Jesu, priceless treasure

Author: Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878); Johann Franck (1618-1677) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #687 (2013) Meter: 6.6.5.6.6.5.7.8.6 Topics: Despair and Trouble Lyrics: 1 Jesu, priceless treasure, source of purest pleasure, truest friend to me; ah! how long in anguish shall my spirit languish yearning, Lord, for thee? Thine I am, O spotless Lamb, I will suffer naught to hide thee, naught I ask beside thee. 2 In thine arms I rest me, foes who would molest me cannot reach me here. Though the earth be shaking, every heart be quaking, Jesus calms my fear; lightnings flash and thunders crash; yet, though sin and hell assail me, Jesus will not fail me. 3 Satan, I defy thee; death, I now decry thee; fear, I bid thee cease. World, thou shalt not harm me nor thy threats alarm me while I sing of peace. God's great power guards every hour; earth and all its depths adore him, silent bow before him. 4 Hence with earthly treasure! Thou art all my pleasure, Jesus, all my choice. Hence, thou empty glory! naught to me thy story, told with tempting voice. Pain or loss, or shame or cross, shall not from my Saviour move me, since he deigns to love me. 5 Hence, all fear and sadness! For the Lord of gladness, Jesus, enters in; they who love the Father, though the storms may gather, still have peace within; yea, whate'er I here must bear, thou art still my purest pleasure, Jesu, priceless treasure! Scripture: Matthew 13:44-46 Languages: English Tune Title: JESU MEINE FREUDE

The one who longs to make us whole

Author: Edith Sinclair Downing (b. 1922) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #719 (2005) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Despair and Trouble Lyrics: 1 The one who longs to make us whole is waiting to embrace our broken lives, so we can know the power of healing grace. God's love surrounds our suffering, and keeps us through the night; God helps us bear our deep despair till we see morning light. 2 The one who saves us from ourselves is waiting to release our hearts from chains of self-reproach and failure to find peace. When harmful habits leave us bruised, distraught by inner pain, God comes to us through trusted friends, and helps us hope again. 3 The one who understands our need accepts us as we are; and, like a loved one, welcomes us when we have wandered far. God never says we come too late to be forgiven, free, but promises we can become the self we're meant to be. Scripture: Acts 10:38 Languages: English Tune Title: THIRD MODE MELODY
