Leonard Marshall

1809 - 1890 Person Name: L. Marshall Composer of "[Abide with me; fast falls the eventide]" in Sparkling Diamonds Marshall, Leonard. (Hudson, New Hampshire, May 3, 1809--July 1, 1890, Hudson, N.H.) Baptist. Voice pupil of John Paddon of London and Charles Zenner, harmonist. Tenor soloist of Handel and Haydn Society ca. 1844-1850. Music director at Twelfth Congregational Church, Boston, Massachusetts, 1836-1957; Bowdoin Square Baptist Church, ca.1867-1870; Harvard Street Baptist Church, ca.1870-1875, and other Boston churches. Chorus director at Tremont Temple, 1857-1867. Author of popular songs, "Don't Give Up the Ship" and "The Mountaineer," and of thirteen church music books; published The Sacred Star hymnal, 1861, Boston. Wrote words of Easter hymn commencing, "Jesus Christ, our precious Savior," and hymn "Ever gracious, loving Savior, Come and bless us from on high." --E.F. Albert J. Holden

1841 - 1916 Person Name: A. J. H. Composer of "[Abide with me: fast falls the eventide]" in Songs of Faith, Hope, and Love A Founder of the American Guild of Organists and composer and editor of numerous pieces and collections of sacred music (of which perhaps Songs of Faith, Hope and Love, 1883, is best known), Albert Junos Holden was born in Boston on August 17, 1841. He studied in New York City, and served there as organist of the Church of the Divine Paternity (Universalist) and of the Church of the Puritans (Presbyterian). His sacred solo "In Heavenly Love Abiding" was recorded by the "Metropolitan Quartet" on an Edison Blue Amberol cylinder, No. 3813, in 1919. He died in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, on July 16, 1916. George Edward Martin

b. 1851 Composer of "[Abide with me! Fast falls the eventide]" in Six Hymns George Edward Martin – Martin left his charge in St. Louis, MO, in 1898. For two years following he was pastor of the Holland Memorial Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and then spent a year and a half in rest and travel. He was installed pastor of the Kirk Street congregational Church in Lowell, Mass., March 3, 1902. He received the degree of D.D. from Wabash College in 1895, and also from Park College, MO. He is the author of “Sermons and Sermon Rhymes,” and “Sunday Songs for Little Children,” and has given much time and study to the writing of hymns and tunes for children. Eichhorn was living in Creek, Indiana, by 1880. He and his wife Edna were in Denver, Colorado, by 1910, and in Redlands, California, by 1920.
