God Is Our Refuge and Strength

Appears in 49 hymnals Topics: God as Refuge Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; 2 Though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 3 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; God shall help her at the break of day. 4 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 5 Come now and look upon the works of the LORD, what awesome things he has done on earth. It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. 6 "Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: [God is our refuge and strength] Text Sources: The Book of Common Prayer

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.5.5.5.6.7 Appears in 30 hymnals Topics: God as Refuge Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon; he helps us free from ev'ry need that has us now o'ertaken. The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might are his dread arms in fight; on earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, soon were our loss effected; but for us fights the valiant one whom God himself elected. You ask, "Who is this?" Jesus Christ it is, the almighty LORD, and there's no other God; he holds the field forever. 3 Though devils all the world should fill, all eager to devour us, we tremble not, we fear no ill: they shall not overpow'r us. This world's prince may still scowl fierce as he will, he can harm us none. He's judged; the deed is done; one little word can fell him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it; he's by our side upon the plain with his good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, goods, fame, child, and wife, though all may be gone, our victory is won; the kingdom's ours forever! Scripture: Psalm 46 Used With Tune: EIN FESTE BURG Text Sources: Tr. composite

Praise the LORD! Sing Hallelujah!

Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: God as Refuge Lyrics: 1 Praise the LORD! Sing hallelujah! Come, our great Redeemer praise. I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days. Put no confidence in princes, nor on human help depend. They shall die, to dust returning; all their thoughts and plans shall end. 2 Happy are the ones professing Jacob's God to be their aid. They are blest whose hope of blessing on the LORD their God is stayed. Heaven and earth the LORD created, seas and all that they contain. He delivers from oppression; righteousness he will maintain. 3 Food he daily gives the hungry, sets the mourning prisoner free, raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eyes to see. God our Savior loves the righteous, and the stranger he befriends, helps the orphan and the widow, judgment on the wicked sends. 4 Praise the LORD! Sing hallelujah! Come, our great Redeemer praise. I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days. Over all God reigns forever; through all ages he is King. Unto him, your God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing. Scripture: Psalm 146 Used With Tune: [Praise the LORD, sing hallelujah] Text Sources: Psalter, 1887, alt.

God's Glory Fills the Heavens

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr., b. 1944 Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: God as Refuge First Line: God's glory fills the heavens with hymns Lyrics: 1 God’s glory fills the heavens with hymns; the domed sky bears the Maker’s mark. New praises sound from day to day and echo through the knowing dark. Without a word their songs roll on; into all lands their voices run. And with a champion’s strength and grace from farthest heaven comes forth the sun. 2 God’s perfect law revives the soul; its precepts make the simple wise. Its just commands rejoice the heart; its truth gives light unto the eyes. Forever shall this law endure: unblemished, righteous, true, complete. No gold we ever found so fine, no honey in the comb more sweet. 3 God’s servant may I ever be: this world my joy, that word my guide. O cleanse me, LORD, from secret sin; deliver me from selfish pride. Accept my thoughts and words and deeds; let them find favor in your sight. For you alone can make me whole, O LORD, my refuge and my might. Scripture: Psalm 19 Used With Tune: CREATION
