At the name of Jesus

Author: Caroline Maria Noel, 1817-1877 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #54b (2000) Meter: 6.5.6.5 D Topics: Year B Lent 2 Lyrics: 1 At the name of Jesus ev'ry knee shall bow, ev'ry tongue confess him King of glory now: 'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who, from the beginning, was the mighty Word. 2 At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array. 3 Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed: 4 Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father's breast; filled it with the glory, of that perfect rest. 5 Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. 6 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: crown him as your Captain in temptation's hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power. 7 Surely, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 1:7 Languages: English Tune Title: CAMBERWELL

We Have Come at Christ's Own Bidding

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Hymnal: Voices United #104 (1996) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Lent 2 Year B; Lent 2 Year C Lyrics: 1 We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place, where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace. Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain, searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain. 2 Light breaks in upon our darkness, splendour bathes the flesh-joined Word, Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard. Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the Law and Prophets meet: Christ, with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete. 3 Strengthened by this glimpse of glory, fearful lest our faith decline, we like Peter find it tempting to remain and build a shrine. But true worship gives us courage to proclaim what we profess, that our daily lives may prove us people of the God we bless. Languages: English Tune Title: ABBOT'S LEIGH

O Wondrous Sight, O Vision Fair

Author: John Mason Neale Hymnal: The New Century Hymnal #184 (1995) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Year B Lent 2; Year C Lent 2 Lyrics: 1 O wondrous sight, O vision fair of glory that the church shall share, Which Christ upon the mountain shows, where brighter than the sun, Christ glows! 2 From age to age the tale declare, how with the three disciples there, Where Moses and Elijah meet, they with the Christ God's future greet. 3 The law and prophets there have place, two chosen witnesses of grace; the Father's voice from out the cloud proclaims the Human One aloud. 4 With shining face and bright array Christ deigns to manifest today what glory shall be theirs beyond, who live within God's loving bond. 5 And faithful hearts are raised on high by this great vision's mystery, For which in joyful strains we raise the voice of prayer, the hymn of praise.
