1823 - 1911 Person Name: T. W. Higginson Author of "No human eye Thy face may see" in Worship Song Higginson, Thomas Wentworth, M.A., was born at Cambridge, U.S.A., Dec. 22, 1823, and educated at Harvard. From 1847 to 1850 he was Pastor of an Unitarian Church at Newburyport, and from 1852 to 1858 at Worcester. In 1858 he retired from the Ministry, and devoted himself to literature. During the Rebellion he was colonel of the first negro regiment raised in South Carolina. In addition to being for some time a leading contributor to the Atlantic Monthly, he published Outdoor Papers, 1863; Malbone, 1869; and other works. During his residence at the Harvard Divinity School he contributed the following hymns to Longfellow and Johnson's Book of Hymns, 1846:— 1. No human eyes Thy face may see. God known through love. 2. The land our fathers left to us. American Slavery. 3. The past is dark with sin and shame. Hope. 4. To Thine eternal arms, O God. Lent. In the Book of Hymns these hymns are all marked with an asterisk. They, together with others by Mr. Higginson, are given in Putnam's Singers and Songs of the Liberal Faith, 1875. [Rev. F. M. Alfred A. Woodhull

1810 - 1836 Person Name: A. A. Woodhull Author of "Great God of nations, now to Thee" in Praise Songs Woodhull, Alfred Alexander, M.D., grandson of John Woodhull, D.D., of Freehold, New Jersey; was born March 25, 1810, educated for the medical profession, and practiced at Princeton, where he died Oct. 5, 1836. His hymn, “God of the passing year to Thee," appeared as No. 406 in the official edition of Presbyterian Psalms & Hymns, Princeton, in 1829. It has attained to extensive use in the altered form as "Great God of nations, now to Thee." Its authorship was determined by Dr. Hatfield, in his Church Hymn Book, 1872, No. 1295. Thomas Tiplady

1882 - 1967 Author of "O men of God, go forth to win" in The Hymnal Tiplady, Thomas. Was Director of the Lambeth Mission in South London, which was maintained under the auspices of the Methodist Church. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ============================== Thomas Tiplady is the Director of the Lambeth Mission in South London which is maintained under the auspices of the Methodist Church. There for thirty-seven years he has ministered among the poor of that section of the great British metropolis. It has been a ministry with many unique features among them a moving picture program at the "Ideal" which has become an institution in itself. Out of this work in London have come several volumes of hymns written originially for use in the services at the Mission. Several of these hymns are to be found in American hymnbooks. 1864 - 1942 Author of "Pass On the Torch" in Hymns for a Pilgrim People Born: December 30, 1864, Manchester, New Hampshire. Died: April 23, 1942, Manchester, New Hampshire. Cross attended Phillips Andover Academy, Amherst College and the Andover Theological Seminary. He pastored in Cliftondale, Massachusetts (1892-96); Springfield, Massachusetts (1896-1901); at the Old South Church, Boston, Massachusetts (1901-12); and Milford, Massachusetts (1916-25).
