Author of "Spirit of holiness above" James Thompson, who styles himself the "Animal's Padre", is an animal rights advocate and anti-vivisection activist in Wales, who compiled Hymns for Creatures Great and Small, which his website (all-creatures.org/ap) describes as an "ecumenical booklet of 40 selected animal hymns, set to well known hymn tunes for use at animal blessing services, demo[onstration]s and vigils. [Four] of these have actually been sung within Westminster Abbey!" One hymn he wrote that is not in the aforementioned hymnal is titled "Against the Cull: A Hymn For The Care Of Cows And Badgers", set to ST. GERTRUDE, beginning "Onward Christian soldiers marching as to war; Overcoming evils in Welsh farming law."

James Oren Thompson

1834 - 1917 Person Name: J. O. Thompson Author of "Far and Near the Fields Are Teeming" in Psalter Hymnal (Blue) Born June 9, 1834 in Waldo, ME. He was a minister before joining the army and fighting in the Civil War. After the war he joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. He transferred to the Providence, RI conference and retired in 1886. He moved to Keyser, WV and edited The Mountain Echo. He then moved to Charleston, WV and served as secretary of the Agriculture. In 1905 he moved to St. Petersburg, FL where he was the minister at the First Ave. Methodist Church. He died Sept. 28, 1917. From Hymn Studies http://homeschoolblogger.com/hymnstudies/
