A Fox Has a Den

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Faith That Lets Us Sing #4 (2017) Meter: 5.5.5.5 D Scripture: Matthew 25:40 Lyrics: 1 A fox has a den, a bird has a nest, yet Jesus the Christ had no place to rest, save for a manger in dim, dusty room, an old, rugged cross, a newly-made tomb. 2 Now risen, Christ walks the streets of our town, befriending the poor wherever they’re found, sharing the trials of those without homes, and bearing their pain in feeling alone. 3 How can we leave you, Christ, there with the poor, to share in the life that they must endure? Here in our hearts there is room! Be our guest! Christ said, “I can’t come without all the rest. 4 “When I was hungry, you saw I was fed; with no place to sleep, you gave me a bed. You were good neighbors when I had no home, now welcome the least, my loved ones, my own.” 5 Compassionate Christ, forgive us, we pray, that we have ignored the poor in this way. Give us your vision to see in each face a neighbor in need of our love and grace. Languages: English Tune Title: CARTER'S TUNE

The Kingdom We Inherited

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Come Away with Me #5 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.6.7.6 Scripture: Matthew 25:31-44 Lyrics: The kingdom we inherited is not a worldly one, The realm of Christ is everywhere God's loving work is done. His legacy is service to the least of humankind: In each needy face, he said, his own face we will find. A piece of bread, a saving cup of water in his name, a welcome to a stranger, the healing of the lame, warm clothing for a naked one, a visit to the bound: in each simple act of love the loving Christ is found. The kingdom we inherited is not a worldly one, The realm of Christ is everywhere God's loving work is done. Pray bless us, God, as heirs of Love, that what we do and say may reflect the face of Christ to all we meet today. When Jesus Was A Refugee

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: The Song Lingers On #9 (2003) Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Scripture: Matthew 25:35-36 Lyrics: When Jesus was a refugeefrom Herod’s cruel tyranny,an exile in a foreign place,a child in need of saving grace,we wonder who it was God ledto shelter him and give him bread. We wonder too, had we been there, would we have been as quick to share? When Jesus left his parents’ home, without a place to call his own,he walked with strangers on the streetand lived with those he chanced to meet--a fisherman in Galilee, and newfound friends in Bethany.Would we have welcomed him that way,and given him a place to stay? When Jesus died upon a crossalone, with few to mourn his loss,a friend came forth to offer roomfor him within a garden tomb. They gently took his body there, anointing him with tender care.Would we have heeded God’s requestand helped to lay our Lord to rest? Now risen, Christ still makes his homewith everyone who walks alone, and, with the people on the street, still waits in line for bread to eat.The time is now. We must decide. Will we pass by the other side,or will we follow Love’s commandand reach out with a helping hand? Topics: Chirstian Life Neighbors; Peace and Justice Tune Title: NEIGHBORS

As Rachel Mourned the Children

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Come Away with Me #11 (1998) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Scripture: Matthew 25:40 First Line: As Rachel mourned her children Lyrics: As Rachel mourned her children King Herod sent to die, good people stood there, silent, and no one questioned why, why children had to suffer to save a king his throne, why people stood by watching, and let them die alone. In every town and city the Herods of our day ignore the needs of children, so they can have their way. Good people still stand silent, few dare to pay the price; and mothers still are weeping at each new sacrifice. Above their cries of anguish a child's voice can be heard, the stable-child of Mary, God's living, loving Word: "Your children thirst and hunger. Now, tell us, tell us why You let the Herods triumph And sentence us to die?" Forgive us, Holy Jesus, we did not see you there among the countless children committed to our care. Stir us to break our silence to give your love a voice, till every weeping mother has reason to rejoice. Topics: Children Christ among the children whose needs are ignored today; Children Prayer for awareness of needs of children today Languages: English Tune Title: HEROD'S LEGACY
