Dewey Westra

Westra (b. Holland, MI, 1899; d. Wyoming, MI, 1979) was a dedicated educator, writer, and musician who faithfully served the Christian Reformed Church. He attended Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Wayne State University in Detroit. In the 1920s and 30s he was a Christian school Principal in Byron Center and Detroit, Michigan. During the 1940s he was involved in various ventures, including becoming a diesel instructor for the Ford Motor Company. After 1947 he became a principal again, serving at Christian schools in Sioux Center, Iowa; Randolph, Wisconsin; and Walker, Michigan. Westra wrote poetry in English, Dutch, and Frisian, and translated poetry into English from Dutch and Frisian. He arranged many songs and composed songs for children's choirs. He also versified all one hundred and fifty psalms and the Lord's Prayer, as well as the songs of Mary, Zechariah, and Simeon, in meters that fit the corresponding Genevan psalm tunes. His manuscripts are housed in the library of Calvin College. Seventeen of his psalm versifications and his paraphrases of the Lucan canticles were included in the 1934 and in the 1959 editions of the Psalter Hymnal. Much of the credit for keeping the Genevan psalms alive in the Christian Reformed Church goes to Westra. Bert Polman

In 1831 she was married to a Mr. Wilson, and died at Tunbridge Wells, Sept. 17, 1846. Her publications were somewhat numerous, and included a History of England in Verse, 1801; a Poetical Catechism, 1821; Serious Poetry, 1822; Death, and other Poems, 1823, &c. Her Autobiography, Letters, and Remains were published in 1843, and her Table of the Lord in 1859. Her best known hymns are:— 1. For what shall I praise Thee, My God and my King? Thanksgiving in Affliction. In common use in Great Britain and America. 2. Often the clouds of deepest woe. Affliction leading to Glory. From her Poetical Catechism, 1821, p. 25. Ernest A. Payne

Person Name: Ernest A. Payne is General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland with offices in London. He is also active in the Psalms and Hymns Trust which is the publication society of the British Baptists. He was a member of the Editorial Committee for the Baptist Hymn Book of 1962. He was also a member of the committee which prepared The Companion for this hymnal. He is an active member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. His translation of one of the hymns in the Anabaptist Ausbund of the 16th Century appears in the Baptist Hymn Book, entitled "Our Father God, thy name we praise." He is the author of numerous books including the "Free Church Tradition in the Life of England" and the "Fellowship of Believers". He has held many important positions in British church life including service as moderator of the Free Church Federal Council 1958-59. George Hugh Bourne

R. B. Bourne, born at St. Paul's Cray, Kent, 8th Nov. 1840, and educated at Eton, and O. C. C, Oxford, graduating B.A., 1863; B.C.L., 1866; and D.C.L. 1871. Taking Holy Orders in 1863, he became Curate of Sandford-on-Thames, 1863. He was afterwards Head Master of Chardstock College, and is now (1886) Warden of the same school, which has been transferred to St. Edmund's, Salisbury. Dr. Bourne has written the following hymns:— 1. Scarce discerning aught before us. General, Written in Switzerland in 1861, and published in Lyra Messianica, 1864, p. 17, in 10 stanzas of 4 lines, and repeated in the Appendix to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Psalms & Hymns, 1869, in an abbreviated form. 2. 0 Christ, the king of human life. Holy Matrimony. A hymn on Holy Matrimony, written in 1867 for the marriage of Dr. A. B. Webb, Bishop of Bloemfontein, and included in the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Appendix to the Psalms & Hymns, 1869, and thence into Church Hymns, 1871. 3. Of the wondrous Body, 0 my tongue be telling. A translation of "Pange lingua gloriosi corporis," q.v., contributed to Lyra Eucharistica, 2nd edition, 1864. Dr. Bourne has also written seven Post-Communion hymns for use in the Chapel of St. Edmund's College, Salisbury.
