Once A Woman Silent Stood

Author: John Newton Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Once a woman silent stood While Jesus sat at meat; From her eyes she poured a flood, To wash His sacred feet: Shame and wonder, joy and love, All at once possessed her mind, That she e’er so vile could prove, Yet now forgiveness find. 2 "How came this vile woman here? Will Jesus notice such? Sure, if He a prophet were, He would disdain her touch!" Simon thus, with scornful heart, Slighted one whom Jesus loved, But her Savior took her part, And thus his pride reproved. 3 "If two men in debt were bound, One less, the other more; Fifty, or five hundred pound, And both alike were poor; Should the lender both forgive, When he saw them both distressed; Which of them would you believe, Engaged to love him best?" 4 "Surely he who much did owe," The Pharisee replied; Then our Lord, “By judging so, Thou dost for her decide: Simon, if like her you knew, How much you forgiveness need; You like her had acted too, And welcomed Me indeed! 5 "When the load of sin is felt, And much forgiveness known; Then the heart of course will melt, Though hard before as stone: Blame not then, her love and tears, Greatly she in debt has been: But I have removed her fears, And pardoned all her sin." 6 When I read this woman’s case, Her love and humble zeal; I confess, with shame of face, My heart is made of steel; Much has been forgiv’n to me, Jesus paid my heavy score, What a creature must I be, That I can love no more! Jesus Leaves His Throne On High

Author: Benjamin Beddome, 1717-1795 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Jesus leaves His throne on high, To save a ruined race; Lo, He condescends to die, And take the sinner’s place: In deep slumbers see Him borne To the tomb, but soon He wakes; On the third, the glorious morn, Death’s iron bands He breaks. 2 Soldiers at the entry stand, The sacred place to guard; But behold, the time’s at hand, The tomb must be unbarred: Angels roll the stone away, While the watchers’ eyes are sealed, Death reluctant yields his prey, And Jesus stands revealed. 3 Raise, ye saints, your joyful eyes, The victory is yours; Jesus now above the skies, Your endless bliss secures: He the first-fruits from the grave, Gives a pledge of all to come: Trust in Him, whose power to save Shall bring you safely home. Sinner, Hear The Savior's Call

Author: John Newton Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 58 hymnals First Line: Sinner, hear the Savior’s call Lyrics: 1 Sinner, hear the Savior’s call, He now is passing by; He has seen thy grievous thrall, And heard thy mournful cry. He has pardons to impart, Grace to save thee from thy fears; See the love that fills His heart, And wipe away thy tears. 2 Why art thou afraid to come And tell Him all thy case? He will not pronounce thy doom, Nor frown thee from His face: Wilt thou fear Emmanuel? Wilt thou dread the Lamb of God, Who, to save thy soul from hell, Has shed His precious blood? 3 Think, how on the cross He hung Pierced with a thousand wounds! Hark, from each as with a tongue The voice of pardon sounds! See, from all His bursting veins, Blood, of wondrous virtue, flow! Shed to wash away thy stains, And ransom thee from woe. 4 Though His majesty be great, His mercy is no less; Though He thy transgressions hate, He feels for thy distress: By Himself the Lord has sworn, He delights not in thy death; But invites thee to return, That thou mayst live by faith. 5 Raise thy downcast eyes, and see What throngs His throne surround! These, though sinners once like thee, Have full salvation found: Yield not then to unbelief! While He says, "There yet is room"; Though of sinners thou art chief, Since Jesus calls thee, come.
