Sure, wicked Fools must needs suppose

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #XIV (1760) Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 Sure, wicked Fools must needs suppose, That God is nothing but a Name: Corrupt and lewd their Practice grows, No Breast is warm'd with holy Flame. 2 The Lord look'd down from Heav'n's high Tow'r And all the sons of Men did view, To see if any own'd his Pow'r'; If any Truth or Justice knew. 3 But all, he saw, were gone aside, All were degen'rate grown and base: None took Religion for their Guide, Not one of all the sinful Race. 4 But can these workers of Deceit Be all so dull and senseless grown, That they, like Bread, my People eat, And God's Almighty Pow'r disown? 5 How will they tremble then for Fear, When his just Wrath shall them o'ertake! For, to the Righteous, God is near, And never will their Cause forsake. 6 Ill Men, in vain with Scorn expose The Methods which the Good pursue; Since God a Refuge is for those Whom his just Eyes with Favour view. 7 Would he his saving Pow'r employ, To break his People's servile Band; Then Shouts of universal Joy Shall loudly eccho through the Land. That there is not a God, the fool

Hymnal: The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook #P14 (2004) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 14 Lyrics: 1 That there is not a God, the fool doth in his heart conclude: they are corrupt, their works are vile, not one of them doth good. 2 The Lord upon the sons of men from heaven did look abroad, to see if any understood, and did seek after God. 3 Corrupt they altogether are, they all aside are gone; And there is none that doeth good, yea, sure there is not one. 4 These workers of iniquity do they not know at all, that they my people eat as bread, nor on Jehovah call? 5 There feared they much; for God is with the whole race of the just. 6 You shame the counsel of the poor, because the Lord's his trust. 7 Let Israel’s help from Zion come: when back the Lord shall bring His captives, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall sing.
