A. Royce Eckhardt

b. 1937 Composer of the harmony of "BEACH SPRING" in Hymns for the Family of God Royce Eckhardt has served as a director of music, organist, conductor, composer, arranger, hymnal editor, teacher, and hymnologist for over fifty years. He has served Evangelical Covenant churches as minister of music and organist in Seattle, New Britain (CT), Winnetka, and Hinsdale, Illinois, and also the Winnetka Presbyterian Church. Mr. Eckhardt earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance in 1960 from North Park College, Chicago, and a Master of Music degree in liturgical music at Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford in 1972. Royce joined the music faculty at Seattle Pacific College in 1961, teaching organ, music theory and literature courses and directing small choral ensembles. He served as adjunct professor of church music at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, specializing in hymnology and also serving as chapel organist. Mr. Eckhardt was a member of the Covenant Hymnal Commission that produced The Covenant Hymnal (1973). In 1990 he was appointed to the Special Hymnal Commission that compiled and published The Covenant Hymnal: A Worshipbook (1996), serving as music editor. He is represented in the hymnal with 47 arrangements, original tunes, and descants. His many hymn arrangements, harmonizations and tunes appear in eight American hymnals. Royce also served as music director of the Covenant Ministers Chorus from 1985 to 2005, leading the Chorus on a concert tour to Sweden and Germany in 1990 and on a second concert tour in 2001 to Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. He has led many workshops and seminars throughout the country on worship and church music related topics, is a published composer of organ and choral works, a board member of North Shore American Guild of Organists, board member of The Bach Week Festival, and a member of The Hymn Society. H. N. Lincoln

1859 - 1948 Person Name: H. N. L. Arranger of "[Come, ye sinners, poor and needy]" in The New Gospel Song Book Horace Neely Lincoln, 1859-1948. Horace was the son of James Lincoln and Emaline King, and husband of Etta Lee Thurmand (married 1887). He moved with his family to Texas when he was seven years old. At age 10, he began attending a singing school conducted by James M. Jolley of Mississippi. In 1880, he taught his first singing class in his old neighborhood school house. Later that year, he attended his first normal music school, taught at Mountain Home (now Holland), Texas. Lincoln had other musical training under L. B. Shook (a former student of Philip Bliss) and John McPherson of Illinois. In 1898, he graduated from the Chicago National College of Music, and in 1906 took a post-graduate course under Horatio Palmer. Ami Bost

1790 - 1874 Person Name: A. Bost Composer of "NORMANDY" in Redemption Songs Rev. Paul Ami Isaac David Bost, was born on June 10, 1790 in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied theology at the Moravian Institute at Neuwied and at the University of Geneva. He was an itinerant preacher in Switzerland, Germany and France. In 1825, he co-founded the Reformed Free Church of Geneva. From 1828-37 he worked as an evangelist in Carouge, After a brief pastorate at Asnires and Bourges in France, he was appointed chaplain of the prison of the Maison Centrale at Melun, where he remained until 1848, then lived in Geneva. George A. Minor

1845 - 1904 Person Name: Geo. A. Minor Arranger of "[Come ye sinners, poor and needy]" in The Best Standard Songs George A. Minor was a native of Richmond, Virginia. He was an active member of the First Baptist church and led the singing in the Sunday school of that church. He composed several Sunday school hymns. He worked for the Hume-Minor Company, a piano and music dealer, and for the Mason-Hamlin Company,a piano manufacturer. Joseph Harker

1880 - 1970 Person Name: Hark Author of "Come, Ye Sinners" in Songs of Redemption Joseph Harker, Jr., was born on March 6, 1880, in Alnwick, Northumberland, England, into a musical Methodist family. They moved to the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area in 1900. He taught music for several years in his home in Simonside Street in Wallsend, commemorating this name in one of his hymn tunes (No. 543 in the 1985 Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal). He evidently inherited musical talent from his father, Joseph Harker, Sr., who at one time owned a music shop in the coastal port of Amble. Joseph, Jr., married in 1905, and soon after joined the Seventh-day Adventist church. In 1916 he was invited to work part-time in the North England Conference. Two years later he was appointed president of the Irish Mission, holding that office for the quadrennium. He was then transferred to pastoral work in the South England Conference, but in 1939 he was recalled to the British Union as leader of the Youth and the Home Missionary Departments to fill the gap left by the early demise of his predecessor. He continued there until 1946 when he retired to Reading in Berkshire. He served as elder in the church there for several more years before his death on May 15, 1970. His obituary noted, "Some of our best-loved and oft-used hymns came from his pen ... . His compositions will continue to inspire us until we, with him, can hear the angels sing!"
