Speak, O ye Judges of the Earth

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LVIII (1767) Topics: Description of Unjust Judges Lyrics: 1 Speak, O ye Judges of the Earth, If just and right your Sentence be; Or must not Innocence at last, Appeal to Heav'n from your Decree? Your wicked Hearts and Judgements are, By Malice most unjustly sway'd; Your griping Hands, by weighty Bribes, Are still to Violence betray'd. 2 To Virtue Strangers from the Womb, Their Infant Steps went always wrong; Thy prattled Slander, and in Lies Employ'd at first their infant Tongue. No Serpent, of parch'd Afric's Breed, Did ever ranker Poison bear; The drowsy Adder will as soon, Unlock to Truth his sullen Ear. 3 Unmov'd by good Advice, and deaf As stupid Adders they remain, From whom the skillful Charmer's Voice, Can by no Means Attention gain. Defeat, O GOD, their threat'ning Rage, And timely break their growing Pow'r: Do thou disarm these Lions' Jaws, Before they're practis'd to devour. 4 Let now their Insolence, at Height, Like ebbing Tides, be quickly spent; Their shiver'd Darts deceive their Aim, When they their warlike Bows have bent. Like Snails, let them dissolve to Slime, Let them like hasty Births become; Unworthy to behold the Sun, Let them be dead within the Womb. 5 E'er Thorns can make the Flesh-pot boil, Tempestuous Wrath shall quickly come From GOD, and snatch them hence alive, To their eternal dismal Doom. The Righteous shall rejoice to see, Their daring Crimes such Vengeance meet, And Saints in Persecutors' Blood Shall safely dip their harmless Feet. 6 Transgressors then with Grief shall see, The Righteous due Rewards obtain, And own a GOD, whose Justice will, Or soon, or late the Earth arraign. The Fullness which the World affords

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXIV (1767) Topics: Description of A Citizen of Heaven Lyrics: 1 The Fullness which the World affords, The Earth and People are the LORD's; By him assign'd their Habitation: Establish'd on teh Seas it stands, The Floods by his Almighty Hands, For ever fixt a sure Foundation. 2 Oh! who shall to that Hill ascend, And low before thy Footstool bend; Where thou, O LORD, hast chose thy Dwelling? The Man whose Hands and Heart are free, From Blood, Deceit and Perjury. The Man in Purity excelling. 3 This is the Man, to whom the LORD, His saving Blessings will afford; And whom he'll crown with his Salvation; by such alone his Courts are trod, Who seeks the Face of Jacob's GOD; The happy chosen Generation. 4 Erect your Head, O Zion's Gate! Unfold to entertain in State, Receive your King in Might abounding, Who is this King of Glory, who? 'Tis he who triumphs o'er the foe, Their Ranks and Ruin wide confounding. 5 Lift up your Heads, ye Gates unfold! Eternal Gates, ye Doors of old, Receive your King, for Might renowned. Say, who that glorious King can be? Behold! the Lord of Hosts is he, The GOD who comes with Glory crowned. Scripture: Psalm 24 Languages: English Tune Title: [The fullness which the world affords]

The Heav'ns declare thy Glory, LORD

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XIX (1767) Topics: Description of Glory of the Law Lyrics: 1 The Heav'ns declare thy Glory, LORD, Which that, and that alone can fill; The Firmament and Stars express their great Creator's wond'rous Skill: Each Dawn fresh Beams of Knowledge brings, From ev'ry Night Instruction springs. 2 Their pow'rful Language to no Space, Or Realm, or Region is confin'd; 'Tis Nature's universal Voice, And understood by all Mankind: The Sun their Doctrines doth display, Where-e'er he darts his genial Ray. 3 No Bridegroom for his Nuptials dress'd, Can shew a more enliven'd Face; No Giant does like him rejoice, To run with Strength his glorious Race; In one unwearied Round he goes, And Light and Heat on all bestows. Part II 4 GOD's perfect Law converts the Soul, Reclaims the Heart from false Desires; With sacred Wisdom his pure Word The Weak and Ignorant inspires; The Statutes bring sincere Delight; His Word assists the feeblest Sight. 5 The Fear of GOD most perfect is, And shall for evermore endure; The Judgments of the LORD are true, Most just and altogether pure; More precious than fine Gold they are, And sweeter than the Honey far. 6 My trusty Counsellors they are, To me they friendly Warnings give: Divine Rewards attend on those, Who by thy Precepts live. But who can all his Errors see? From secret Faults, LORD, cleanse thou me! 7 Let no presumptuous Sin, O LORD! Obtain Dominion over me; That, by thy Grace preserv'd, I may Far from the great Transgression flee; So shall my Pray'r by thee be bless'd, And I in GOD my Saviour rest. Scripture: Psalm 19 Languages: English Tune Title: [The heavens declare thy glory, Lord]

The LORD himself doth condescend

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXIII (1767) Topics: Description of Confidence of Believers in Death Lyrics: 1 The LORD himself doth condescend, To be my Shepherd and my Friend; I on his faithfulness rely; His Care shall all my Wants supply. 2 In Pastures green he doth me lead, And there in Safety makes me feed, Refreshing Streams are ever nigh, My thirsty Soul to satify. 3 When stray'd, or languid, I complain, His Grace revives my Soul again; For his Name's sake, in Ways upright, He makes me walk with great Delight. 4 Yea, when Death's gloomy Vale I tread, With Joy, ev'n there, I'll lift my Head; From Fear and Dread he'll keep me free, His Rod and Staff shall comfort me. 5 Thou spread'st a Table, Lord for me, While Foes with Spite thy Goodness see; Thou dost my Head with Oil anoint, And a full Cup for me appoint. 6 Goodness and Mercy shall to me, Through all my Life extended be; And when my Pilgrimage is o'er, I'll dwell with thee for evermore. Scripture: Psalm 23 Languages: English Tune Title: [The Lord himself doth condescend]

The LORD, the only GOD is great

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XLVIII (1767) Topics: Description of The Church: Glory and Renown Lyrics: 1 The LORD, the only GOD is great, And therefore greatly to be prais'd; In Sion, on whose happy Mount His everlasting Throne is rais'd. For Sion is the chosen Place, Where he unveils his glorious Face. 2 Her Tow'rs, the Joy of all the Earth, In strong and beauteous Order rise; On her North Side th' Almighty King's Superb imperial City lies; Combining Pow'rs attempt in vain, Her massy Bulwarks to obtain. 3 God in her Palaces is known: His awful Presence is her Guard: Confed'rate Kings withdrew their Siege, And of Success at once despair'd. Nor could their Armies o'er prevail, Should they with all their Force assail. 4 They view'd her Walls, admit'd and fled, With Sorrow and Terror struck; Like Women, whom the sudden Pangs Of hasty Travail had o'ertook. Thou by the East Wind shalt destroy, The Ships that would her Forts annoy. 5 In Sion we have seen perform'd A Work that was to us foretold; In Pledge that GOD for Times to come, His Holy City will uphold: We on thy loving Kindness stay'd, Which in thy Temple is display'd. 6 According to thy Sov'reign Name, Thy Praise. O LORD! thro' Earth extends; Thy pow'rful Arm, as Justice guides, Chastises Mankind or defends: Thy Hand, almighty Pow'r shall show, And Men thy Righteousness shall know. 7 Let Sion's Mount with Joy resound, And let her Daughters all be taught, In Songs his Judgments to extoll, Who this great Deliv'rance wrought, Your Eyes around her Bulwarks cast, And see if any Stone's displac'd. 8 Count all her Tow'rs, her Forts survey Observe their Strength and Order well, That with Assurance to your Heirs, This Wonder you may justly tell; This GOD, while we in him confide; Thro' Life, till Death, shall be our Guide. Scripture: Psalm 48 Languages: English Tune Title: [The Lord, the only God is great]

The wicked Fools must sure suppose

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LIII (1767) Topics: Description of Impiety Lyrics: 1 The wicked Fools must sure suppose, That GOD is nothing but a Name; This gross Mistake their Practice shows, Since Truth and Justice all disclaim: In each corrupt and sinful Way, Their wicked Hearts have gone astray. 2 The LORD look'd down from Heav'n's high Tow'r, The num'rous Race of Men to view, To see if any own'd his Pow'r, If any Truth or Justice knew. But all he saw were backward gone, None for Religion car'd - not one 3 But are those Workers of Deceit, So very dull and senseless grown, That they like Bread my People eat, And GOD's Almighty Pow'r disown? Will they his Justice ne'er proclaim, Nor call upon his Holy Name? 4 Their causeless Fears shall stronger grow; And all the Enemies of GOD Shall soon be foil'd; his Hands shall throw Their Limbs and shatter'd Bones abroad. Thus shall thy Foes be cloath'd with Shame, Because thy GOD despiseth them. 5 O let thy saving Help appear, Salvation out of Sion send; Thy People's earnest Prayers hear, And to our constant Sighs attend: When thou shall break our servile Band, Loud Shouts of universal Joy Our Joys shall echo through the Land. Scripture: Psalm 53 Languages: English Tune Title: [The wicked Fool's must sure suppose]

The wicked Man's Transgression proves

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXXVI (1767) Topics: Description of Impiety Lyrics: 1 The wicked Man's Transgression proves, He fears not GOD, but Falshood loves; Mischievous Arts conceiving; The crafty Foe, with flatt'ring Lies, His cursed Purpose would disguise, In him there's no believing: But his dark Plots expos'd to Shame, Shall shew his Friendship's but a Name, Whate'er is his Profession; His wakeful Malice spends the Night, In forging his accursed Spite, In Schemes of great Oppression. But Reason whispers to my Heart, No Fear of God's before his Eyes. 2 But, LORD, thy Mercy's, my sure Hope, Thy sacred Truth's unmeasur'd Scope, Beyond the Skies extending; Thy Justice like the Hills remains, Thy Providence the World sustains, All Things on thee depending. Since of thy Goodness all partake, Thy shelt'ring Wings the Saints shall make, A Refuge for protection. Such Guests shall to thy Courts be led, And drink as from a Fountain Head, Of Joys, in full Perfection. 3 Thy Presence is eternal Day, To upright Hearts, O LORD! display, Thy Truth's invalued Treasure; Oh! let thy Saints thy Favour gain! With thee the Springs of Life remain, The Springs of Joy and Pleasure. Whilst they, at me, insulting spurn, Their Mischiefs on themselves return, For thou hast me protected: My harmless Life they would surprize, But down they're fall'n no more to rise, By all Mankind rejected. Scripture: Psalm 36 Languages: English Tune Title: [The wicked man's transgression proves]

Thy Mercies, LORD, shall be my Theme

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CI (1767) Topics: Description of Duty of the Ministers of God's Word Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercies, LORD, shall be my Theme, Thy Judgments I will tell; And whilst I lift my voice to thee, My Song on them shall dwell: When wilt thou come, and unto me Thy Righteousness impart? That I before thee in my House, May walk with perfect Heart. 2 An ill Design, or treach'rous Act, I ne'er will take in Hand; Nor shall a froward wicked Man, Within my Presence stand: The private Slanderer shall be, By publick Justice try'd; Nor will I suffer him, who wears The haughty Looks of Pride. 3 But I with Pleasure will behold, The Man from Falsehood free; And he that leads a godly Life, Shall still my Servant be: For treach'rous Men, I never will, For my Companions take; Nor shall mischievous Liars e'er, My House their Dwelling make. 4 My utmost Pow'r I will exert, The Wicked to destroy; Nor shall a Race of sinful Men, Again the Land annoy: All wicked Doers I'll root out, They shall no more remain; Nor thus the city of the LORD, With hateful Deeds profane. Scripture: Psalm 101 Languages: English Tune Title: [Thy Mercies, Lord, shall be my Theme]

Thy mercy, Lord, extend to me

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LI (1767) Topics: Description of Repentance Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercy, Lord, extend to me, As thou wert ever kind; Let me, oppress'd with Loads of guilt, Thy wonted Mercy find: Wash off my foul Offence, And cleanse me from my Sin; For I confess my Crime, and see How very great my Guilt hath been. 2 Against thee, O my GOD, alone, And only in thy Sight, Have I transgress'd, and tho' condemn'd, Must own thy Judgment right: In Guilt each Part was form'd, Of all this sinful Frame; In Sin I was conceiv'd and born, The hapless Heir of Guilt and Shame. 3 Yet thou, whose ever searching Eye, Does inward Truth require, In secret did'st with Wisdom's Laws My tender Soul inspire. With Hyssop purge me, LORD, And so I clean shall be; I shall with Snow in Whiteness vie, When wahs'd and purify'd by thee. 4 Make me, O LORD, to hear with Joy, Thy kind forgiving Voice; That so the Bones which thou hast broke, May with fresh Strength rejoice. Blot out my crying Sins, Nor me in Anger view; Create in me a Heart that's clean, A just and upright Mind renew. Part II 5 Withdraw not thou thy Help, O LORD! Nor cast me from thy Sight; Nor let thy Holy Spirit take Its everlasting Flight. The Joy thy Favour gives, Let me again obtain; And thy free Spirit's firm Support, My feeble fainting Soul sustain. 6 So I thy just and righteous Ways To Sinners will impart; Whilst my Advice shall wicked Men, To thy just Laws convert. My Guilt of Blood remove, My Saviour and my GOD; And my glad Tongue shall loudly tell, Thy Truth and righteous Acts abroad. 7 Do thou, O LORD, unlock my Lips, With Sorrow clos'd, and Shame; So shall my Mouth thy wond'rous Praise, To all the World proclaim. Could Sacrifice atone, Whole Flocks and Herds should die; But on such Off'rings, LORD, thou do'st Disdain to cast a gracious Eye. 8 A humble Spirit is alone, By GOD most highly priz'd; By him a contrite broken Heart, Shall never be despis'd. Let Sion ever be Of thy good Will assur'd; Let thy own City flourish long, By strong and lofty Walls secur'd. 9 'Tis there the Righteous shall attend, And pleasing Tribute pay; And Sacrifice of choicest Kind, Upon thy Altar lay. Scripture: Psalm 51 Languages: English Tune Title: [Thy mercy, Lord, extend to me]

Thy Mercy, LORD, to me extend

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LVI (1767) Topics: Description of Confidence of Believers in Dangers Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercy, LORD, to me extend, Against my Foes my Life defend; Base Men perpetual Strive renewing, With daily Wrongs are me pursuing: Continually my spiteful Foes, To ruin me, with Joy combine; Thou seest, who sit'st enthron'd on high, What mighty Hosts against me join. 2 But though sometimes surpriz'd with Fear, When first I think the Danger near; Yet have I still on thee depended, That my just Cause should be defended: GOD's faithful Promise I shall praise, On which I stedfastly rely; In GOD I trust, and trusting him, The strongest Arm of Flesh defy. 3 My Words they purposely mistake, And by perverting, make them speak A Meaning which I ne'er designed; Thus are their Thoughts to Ill inclined. In close Assemblies they combine, And then most wicked Projects lay; They watch my Steps, and lie in wait To make my harmless Soul their Prey. 4 LORD, wilt thou not such Wrongs regard, Shall they not meet their just Reward! As they have treach'rous Things devised, So let them be by thee castised. Thou numb'rset all my wand'ring Steps, Since I was first compell'd to flee, My very Tears are treasur'd up, O GOD! and registr'd by thee. 5 My Foes shall be therefore be o'erthrown; For GOD my righteous Cause will own; And since to him my Pray'rs directed, I know that I shall be protected. I'll trust GOD's Word, and so despise, Whatever Force Mankind can raise: To thee, O GOD! my Vows are due, To thee alone I'll render Praise. 6 Thou, LORD, shalt and make my Footsteps sure, Thou, LORD, shalt make my Life secure; My Soul from Death thou hast retrieved, And from surrounding Foes relieved, That thus protected by thy Pow'r, I may this Light in Peace enjoy, And in the Service of my GOD, My lengthen'd Days secure employ. Scripture: Psalm 56 Languages: English Tune Title: [Thy mercy, Lord, to me extend]
