My Soul, inspir'd with sacred Love

Appears in 58 hymnals Topics: Prayers Of a Sinner to obtain Forgiveness of Sins Lyrics: 1 My Soul, inspir'd with sacred Love, GOD's holy Name for ever bless; Of all his Favours mindful prove, And still thy grateful Thanks express: 'Tis he, that all thy Sins forgives; And after Sickness makes thee sound; From Danger he thy Life retrieves, By him with Grace and Mercy crown'd. 2 He with good Things thy Mouth supplies, Thy Vigour, Eagle-like, renews; He, when the guiltless Suff'rer cries, His Foe with just Revenge pursues; GOD made of old his righteous Ways, To Moses and our Fathers, known; His Works, to his eternal Praise, Were to the Sons of Jacob shown. 3 The LORD abounds with tender Love, And unexampled Acts of Grace; His waken'd Wrath doth slowly move, His willing Mercy flows apace. GOD will not always harshly chide, But with his Anger quickly part; And loves his Punishment to guide, More by his Love than our Desert. 4 As high as Heav'n its Arch extends Above this little Spot of Clay; So much his boundless Love transcends, The small Respects that we can pay: As far as 'tis from East to West, So far has he our Sins remov'd; Who with a Father's tender Breast, Has such as fear him always lov'd. 5 For GOD, who all our Frame surveys, Considers that we are but Clay; How fresh foe'er we seem, our Days Like Grass or Flow'rs must fade away: Whilst they are nipt with sudden Blasts, Nor can we find their former Place; GOD's faithful Mercy ever lasts, To those that fear him, and their Race. 6 This shall attend on such as still, Proceed in his appointed Way; And who not only know his Will, But to it, just Obedience pay: The LORD, the universal King, In Heav'n has fix'd his lofty Throne; To him, ye Angels, Praises sing, In whose great Strength his Pow'r is shown. 7 Ye that his just Commands obey, And hear and do his sacred Will; Ye Hosts of his, this Tribute pay, Who still what he ordains fulfill: Let ev'ry Creature jointly bless, The mighty LORD: and thou, my Heart, With grateful Joy thy Thanks express, And in this Concert bear thy Part. Scripture: Psalm 103 Used With Tune: [My Soul inspir'd by sacred Love]

Assurance for Evil Days

Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: Vanity Of Sinners First Line: O Lord, be Thou my helper true Lyrics: 1 O Lord, be Thou my helper true, For just and godly men are few; The faithful who can find? From truth and wisdom men depart, With flatt'ring lips and double heart They speak their evil mind. 2 The lips that speak, the truth to hide, The tongues of arrogance and pride, That boastful words employ, False-speaking tongues that boast their might, That own no law, that know no right, Jehovah will destroy. 3 Because the poor are sore oppressed, Because the needy are distressed, And bitter are their cries, The Lord will be their helper strong; To save them from contempt and wrong Jehovah will arise. 4 Jehovah's promises are sure, His words are true, His words are pure As silver from the flame. Tho' base men walk on ev'ry side, His saints are safe, whate'er betide, Protected by His Name. Scripture: Psalm 12 Used With Tune: BREMEN

Thy mercy, Lord, extend to me

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prayers Of a Sinner to obtain Forgiveness of Sins Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercy, Lord, extend to me, As thou wert ever kind; Let me, oppress'd with Loads of guilt, Thy wonted Mercy find: Wash off my foul Offence, And cleanse me from my Sin; For I confess my Crime, and see How very great my Guilt hath been. 2 Against thee, O my GOD, alone, And only in thy Sight, Have I transgress'd, and tho' condemn'd, Must own thy Judgment right: In Guilt each Part was form'd, Of all this sinful Frame; In Sin I was conceiv'd and born, The hapless Heir of Guilt and Shame. 3 Yet thou, whose ever searching Eye, Does inward Truth require, In secret did'st with Wisdom's Laws My tender Soul inspire. With Hyssop purge me, LORD, And so I clean shall be; I shall with Snow in Whiteness vie, When wahs'd and purify'd by thee. 4 Make me, O LORD, to hear with Joy, Thy kind forgiving Voice; That so the Bones which thou hast broke, May with fresh Strength rejoice. Blot out my crying Sins, Nor me in Anger view; Create in me a Heart that's clean, A just and upright Mind renew. Part II 5 Withdraw not thou thy Help, O LORD! Nor cast me from thy Sight; Nor let thy Holy Spirit take Its everlasting Flight. The Joy thy Favour gives, Let me again obtain; And thy free Spirit's firm Support, My feeble fainting Soul sustain. 6 So I thy just and righteous Ways To Sinners will impart; Whilst my Advice shall wicked Men, To thy just Laws convert. My Guilt of Blood remove, My Saviour and my GOD; And my glad Tongue shall loudly tell, Thy Truth and righteous Acts abroad. 7 Do thou, O LORD, unlock my Lips, With Sorrow clos'd, and Shame; So shall my Mouth thy wond'rous Praise, To all the World proclaim. Could Sacrifice atone, Whole Flocks and Herds should die; But on such Off'rings, LORD, thou do'st Disdain to cast a gracious Eye. 8 A humble Spirit is alone, By GOD most highly priz'd; By him a contrite broken Heart, Shall never be despis'd. Let Sion ever be Of thy good Will assur'd; Let thy own City flourish long, By strong and lofty Walls secur'd. 9 'Tis there the Righteous shall attend, And pleasing Tribute pay; And Sacrifice of choicest Kind, Upon thy Altar lay. Scripture: Psalm 51 Used With Tune: [Thy mercy, Lord, extend to me]

The Prayer of the Righteous

Appears in 8 hymnals Topics: Nature Sinners Typified in First Line: Lord, hear the right, regard my cry Lyrics: 1 Lord, hear the right, regard my cry, My prayer from lips sincere; Send Thy approval from on high, My righteousness make clear. Thou in the night my heart hast tried, Nor found it turned from Thee aside. 2 With steadfast courage I design No wrong to speak or do; Thy path of life I choose for mine And walk with purpose true. For help, O God, I cry to Thee, Assured that Thou wilt answer me. 3 O Thou that ever savest those Whose trust on Thee is stayed, Preserving them from all their foes By Thy almighty aid, Let me Thy loving-kindness see, Thy wondrous mercy, full and free. 4 O guard me well as one doth guard The apple of the eye; While deadly foes are pressing hard, To Thee, to Thee I cry. Do Thou my rest and refuge be, O let Thy wings o'er shadow me. 5 My enemy, grown strong in pride, Would take my life away, A lion lurking by my side, Most greedy for his prey. Confront and cast him down, O Lord, From evil save me by Thy sword. 6 Defend me from the men of pride, Whose portion is below, Who, with life's treasures satisfied, No better portion know; They, with earth's joys and wealth content, Must leave them all when life is spent. 7 When I in righteousness at last Thy glorious face shall see, When all the weary night is past, And I awake with Thee To view the glories that abide, Then, then I shall be satisfied. Scripture: Psalm 17 Used With Tune: CALM
