When Aimless Violence Takes Those We Love

Author: Joy F. Patterson, 1931- Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 71:1-18 Lyrics: 1 When aimless violence takes those we love, when random death strikes childhood's promise down, when wrenching loss becomes our daily bread, we know, O God, you leave us not alone. 2 When passing years rob sight and strength and mind yet fail to still a strongly beating heart, and grief becomes the fabric of our days, dear Lord, you do not stand from us apart. 3 Our faith may flicker low, and hope grow dim, yet you, O God, are with us in our pain; you grieve with us and for us day by day, and with us, sharing sorrow, will remain. 4 Because your Son knew agony and loss, felt desolation, grief, and scorn and shame, we know you will be with us, come what may, your loving presence near, always the same. 5 Through long, grief-darkened days help us, dear Lord, to trust your grace for courage to endure, to rest our souls in your supporting love, and find our hope within your mercy sure. Lord, I have put my trust in Thee

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 71 Lyrics: Lord, I have put my trust in Thee, Turn not my confidence to shame; Thy promise is a rock to me, A tower of refuge is Thy name. 220 Thou hast upheld me from the womb; Thou wert my strength and hope in youth; Now trembling, bending o'er the tomb, I lean upon Thine arm of truth. Though I have long outlived my peers, And stand amid the world alone, (A stranger left by former years), I know my God,--by Him am known. Cast me not off in mine old age, Forsake me not in my last hour; The foe hath not foregone his rage, The lion ravins to devour. Not far, my God, not far remove: Sin and the world still spread their snares, Stand by me now, or they will prove Too crafty yet for my grey hairs. Me through what troubles hast Thou brought, Me with what consolations crown'd! Now be Thy last deliverance wrought, My soul in peace with Thee be found. Topics: Old Age

O, Height and depth of boundless love

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 71 Lyrics: 1 O, Height and depth of boundless love, Not men below, nor saints above! Can search the great Creator's Ways, Or know the riches of his grace. 2 Not angels search, nor human skill, Can ever comprehend his will; His judgments, counsels and his mind, The wisest creature cannot find. 3 Yet God was pleased to unfold The things that were conceal'd of old; When he divulg'd that glorious plan, Which was to save the race of man. 4 At first unto the Jews alone, This was by types and shaddows shown; Besides his Prophets and his word To shew the counsels of the Lord. 5 But O, this was not understood, That man should be redeem'd with blood; This was to Jews and Greeks conceal'd, Till all was in the fact reveal'd. 6 The Jews had long salvation sought, In their own works which they had wrought; And thus refus'd the Gospel call, Which prov'd their stumble and their fall. 7 The Heathens hear'd the Gospel voice! It fill'd their souls with greatest joys: When this great mystry came to view, That Jesus died to save them too. 8 O, heighth and depth of love divine, Who could forsee that reat design' The Lord himself, from heav'n came down, And died to make the world his own.
