'I lift my banners,' saith the Lord

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #502 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Duty to God and man; Relative duties Lyrics: "I lift my banner," saith the Lord, "Where Antichrist has stood; The city of my gospel foes Shall be a field of blood. "My heart has studied just revenge, And now the day appears; The day of my redeemed is come To wipe away their tears. "Quite weary is my patience grown, And bids my fury go; Swift as the lightning it shall move, And be as fatal too. "I call for helpers, but in vain; Then has my gospel none? Well, mine own arm has might enough To crush my foes alone. "Slaughter and my devouring sword Shall walk the streets around, Babel shall reel beneath my stroke, And stagger to the ground." Thy honors, O victorious King! Thine own right hand shall raise, While we thy awful vengeance sing, And our deliv'rer praise. Scripture: Isaiah 63:4-7 Languages: English

In thine own ways, O God of love

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #603 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Duty to God and man; Relative duties Lyrics: In thine own ways, O God of love, We wait the visits of thy grace, Our soul's desire is to thy name, And the remembrance of thy face. My thoughts are searching, Lord, for thee 'Mongst the black shades of lonesome night; My earnest cries salute the skies Before the dawn restore the light. Look, how rebellious men deride The tender patience of my God! But they shall see thy lifted hand, And feel the scourges of thy rod. Hark! the Eternal rends the sky, A mighty voice before him goes; A voice of music to his friends, But threat'ning thunder to his foes. Come, children, to your Father's arms, Hide in the chambers of my grace, Till the fierce storms be overblown, And my revenging fury cease. My sword shall boast its thousands slain, And drink the blood of haughty kings, While heav'nly peace around my flock Stretches its soft and shady wings. Scripture: Isaiah 26:21 Languages: English

Psalm 24

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.57 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Duty to God and man First Line: This spacious earth is all the Lord's Lyrics: This spacious earth is all the Lord's, And men, and worms, and beasts, and birds: He raised the building on the seas, And gave it for their dwelling-place. But there's a brighter world on high, Thy palace, Lord, above the sky: Who shall ascend that blest abode, And dwell so near his Maker God? He that abhors and fears to sin, Whose heart is pure, whose hands are clean, Him shall the Lord the Savior bless, And clothe his soul with righteousness. These are the men, the pious race, That seek the God of Jacob's face: These shall enjoy the blissful sight, And dwell in everlasting light. Rejoice, ye shining worlds on high, Behold the King of glory nigh! Who can this King of glory be? The mighty Lord, the Savior's he. Ye heav'nly gates, your leaves display, To make the Lord the Savior way: Laden with spoils from earth and hell, The Conqueror comes with God to dwell. Raised from the dead, he goes before; He opens heav'n's eternal door, To give his saints a blest abode, Near their Redeemer and their God. Scripture: Psalm 24 Languages: English

Our Example

Author: Steele Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CLXVI (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Benevolence a duty and pleasure First Line: And is the gospel peace and love? Lyrics: 1 And is the gospel, peace and love? Such let our conversation be: The serpent blended with the dove, Wisdom and meek simplicity. 2 Whene'er the angry passions rise, And tempt our thoughts or tongues to strife, To Jesus let us lift our eyes, Bright pattern of the Christian life! 3 O how benevolent and kind! How mild! how ready to forgive! Be this the temper of our mind, And these the rules by which we live. 4 To do his heavenly Father's will, Was his employment and delight; Humility and holy zeal Shone thro' his life divinely bright! 5 Dispensing good where'er he came, The labors of his life were love; O, if we love the Savior's name, Let his divine example move. 6 But ah how blind! how weak we are! How frail! how apt to turn aside! Lord, we depend upon thy care, And ask thy spirit for our guide. 7 Thy fair example may we trace, To teach us what we ought to be; Make us by thy transforming grace, Dear Savior, daily more like thee. Justice and equity

Author: Dr. Watts Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CCXLII (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Duty to God And our neighbor First Line: Blessed redeemer how divine Lyrics: 1 Blessed redeemer how divine, How righteous is this rule of thine, "Never to deal with others worse "Than we would have them deal with us!" 2 This golden lesson, short and plain, Gives nor the mind nor memory pain: And every conscience must approve This universal law of love. 3 'Tis written in each mortal breast, Where all our tenderest wishes rest: We draw it from our inmost veins, Where love to self resides and reigns. 4 Is reason ever at a loss? Call in self-love to judge the cause: Let our own fondest passions shew How we should treat our neighbor too. 5 How bless'd would every nation prove, Thus rul'd by equity and love! All would be friends without a foe, And form a paradise below. 6 Jesus, forgive us, that we keep Thy sacred law of love asleep; And take our envy, wrath, and pride, Those savage passions, for our guide. God in the great Assembly sits

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXXII (1767) Topics: Description of Duty of Judges and Magistrates Lyrics: 1 God in the great Assembly sits, Enthron'd, where his impartial Eye In State surveys the Earthly Gods, and does their weaker Judgments try. How can ye then unjustly judge; And be to daring Sinners kind? Strive ye the Orphans to defend, And let the Poor your Justice find. 2 Protect the humble helpless Man, When he's reduc'd to deep Distress, And let not him become a Prey. To such as would his Soul oppress. They neither know, nor will they learn, But blindly roving, go stray; Justice and Truth, the World's Support, Are now beginning to decay. 3 Well then may GOD, in Anger, say, "I've call'd you by my sacred Name, "I've said ye're GOD's, the Sons and Heirs "Of Glory and immortal Fame, "But ne'ertheless, your unjust Deeds, "To strict Account I'll surely call; "You all shall die like common Men, "like other haughty Tyrants fall. 4 Arise, and thy just Judgments, LORD, Throughout th'astonish'd World display, And all the Nations of the Earth, Shall own thy everlasting Sway. Scripture: Psalm 82 Languages: English Tune Title: [God, in the great Assembly sits]

Have mercy, Lord, on me

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #IV (1767) Topics: Description of Duty of the Ministers of God's Word Lyrics: 1 Have mercy, Lord on me, for thou my Judge shalt be, My Hopes in thee remaining, Oh! to my humble Pray'r bow down thy gracious Ear. Be thou my Cause sustaining; How long with vain Design, will ye my foes combine, In wrathful Indignation? How long destructive Lies maliciously devise, To blot my Reputation. 3 Consider that the Just, who place in God their Trust, Are still by him protected; The Lord my voice will hear, and grant my humble pray'r, Whene'er to him directed. Oh! stand ye then in Awe of his most sacred Law, Reflect with deep Contrition; Flee ev'ry Thing that's Ill, and humble to his Will, Your Hearts in low Submission. 3 Amidst thine anxious Cares, and Soul distressing Fears, To GOD pray without ceasing; Sue for his heav'nly Grace, and offer Righteousness, A Sacrifice well pleasing. While Sinners restless grow, more prosp'rous Times to know, In Discontent complaining; LORD, let thy Face divine, on me with Glory shine, Thy Mercy me sustaining. 4 So to my grateful Heart, thy Goodness shall impart, More true and lasting Pleasure Than theirs who seek to find their Joy and Peace of Mind, In Stores of worldly Treasure. With thy Protection blest, I'll teak my needful Rest, My Head in Peace reclining; Securely I'll repose, not fear, tho' all my Foes, Against me are combining. Scripture: Psalm 4 Languages: English Tune Title: [Have mercy, Lord, on me]

Thy Mercies, LORD, shall be my Theme

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CI (1767) Topics: Description of Duty of the Ministers of God's Word Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercies, LORD, shall be my Theme, Thy Judgments I will tell; And whilst I lift my voice to thee, My Song on them shall dwell: When wilt thou come, and unto me Thy Righteousness impart? That I before thee in my House, May walk with perfect Heart. 2 An ill Design, or treach'rous Act, I ne'er will take in Hand; Nor shall a froward wicked Man, Within my Presence stand: The private Slanderer shall be, By publick Justice try'd; Nor will I suffer him, who wears The haughty Looks of Pride. 3 But I with Pleasure will behold, The Man from Falsehood free; And he that leads a godly Life, Shall still my Servant be: For treach'rous Men, I never will, For my Companions take; Nor shall mischievous Liars e'er, My House their Dwelling make. 4 My utmost Pow'r I will exert, The Wicked to destroy; Nor shall a Race of sinful Men, Again the Land annoy: All wicked Doers I'll root out, They shall no more remain; Nor thus the city of the LORD, With hateful Deeds profane. Scripture: Psalm 101 Languages: English Tune Title: [Thy Mercies, Lord, shall be my Theme]

With ever restless, and ungovern'd Rage

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #II (1767) Topics: Description of Duty of the Ministers of God's Word Lyrics: 1 With ever restless, and ungover'd Rage, Why are the Heathen ill Designs contriving? Why thus in rash and vain Attempts engage, Which they can ne'er complete, tho; boldly striving? The earnly Kings, in council close combined, Their utmost Pow'r, their various Forces bring; In Union join'd, in compact all designed, Against the LORD, and his anointed King. 2 "Must we submit," presumptuously they say, "And yield, obedient, whilst they keep us under? "No, let us cast their slavish Bands away. "Shake off their Chains, and break their Cords asunder.' But on his Throne the LORD in Glory seated, Knows their Intent, and sees how they combine; And while their bold Attempts are all defeated, Laughs them to Scorn, and mocks their vain Design. 3 His waken'd Wrath shall shake his guilty Foes, In great Displeasure he shall sore distress them; And thus while yet they dare hi Will oppose, The LORD himself in Thunder shall address them; "Tho' madly thus you have my Pow'r disowned, "Yet be assur'd, the King whom I ordain, "On Sion’s holy Hill shall sit enthroned, "And there securely shall for ever reign." 4 Let all attend and hear GOD's fixt Decree On which he made to me this Declaration, “Thou art my Son, I have begotten thee "This Day, be Sov'regin LORD of ev'ry Nation; “Ask, and receive, 'tis yielded to thy Pleasure; "The Heathen thine Inheritance shall be; "Lands far remote, whose Limits know no Measure, "Shall be eternally posses'd by thee. 5 "Thy awful threatning Sceptte thou shalt shake "O'er all the guilty Foes, and keep them under; "Just as the massy Bars of Iron break "The Potter’s weak and brittle Ware asunder." Learn then, ye Princes, hear with due Attention, And be ye wise, ye judges of the Earth; His sacred Name with humble Rev'rence mention, And joy before him with a godly Mirth. 6 Before the Son bow down with due Respect, Strive to appease him by a low Submission, Lest he in Wrath revenge the bold Neglect, And doom you, helpless, to a swift Perdition. If but in Part, his Anger be inflamed, What Mortal can the fatal stroke withstand? He soon shall see his daring Foes ashamed, And crush'd at once by his Almighty Hand. 7 Then blest are they, who on our GOD rely, With constant Hope on his strong Arm depending, Who humbly strive to serve the LORD most high, With grateful Hearts and Fervour never ending. Scripture: Psalm 2 Languages: English Tune Title: [With ever restless and ungoverned rage]
