When rising from the bed of death

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #IX (1790) Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 When rising from the bed of death, O’erwhelmed with guilt and fear, I view my Maker face to face O how shall I appear! 2 If yet while pardon may be found, And mercy may be sought; My soul with inward horror shrinks, And trembles at the thought! 3 When thou, O Lord shalt stand disclos'd, In majesty severe, And sit in judgment on my soul, O how shall I appear! 4 O may my broken contrite heart, Timely my sins lament, And early with repentant tears, Eternal woe prevent. 5 Behold the sorrows of my Heart, Ere yet it be too late; And hear my Saviour’s dying groan; To give those sorrows weight. 6 For never shall my soul despair Her Pardon to secure, Who knows the only Son hath dy'd To make that pardon sure. And am I born to die?

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #X (1790) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 And am I born to die? To lay this body down? And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown! A land of deepest shade, Unpierc'd by human thought! The dreary regions of the dead, Where all things are forgot. 2 Soon as from earth I go, What will become of me? Eternal happiness or woe Must then my portion be! Wak'd by the trumpet's sound, I from my grave must rise, And see the Judge with glory crown'd, And see the flaming skies! 3 How shall I leave my tomb! With triumph or regret? A fearful or a joyful doom, A curse or blessing meet? Will angel-bands convey Their brother to the bar? Or devils drag my soul away To meet its sentence there? 4 Who can resolve the doubt That tears my anxious breast? Shall I be with the damn'd cast out, Or number'd with the blest? I must from God be driv'n, Or with my Saviour dwell: Must come at his command to heav'n, Or else depart to hell. 5 O thou that wouldst not have One wretched sinner die, Who dy'dst thyself, my soul to save From endless misery! Shew me the way to shun Thy dreadful wrath severe, That when thou comest on thy throne, I may with joy appear. 6 Thou art thyself the way, Thyself in me reveal: So shall I spend my life's short day Obedient to thy will; So shall I love my God, Because he first lov'd me, And praise thee in thy bright abode, To all eternity. And am I only born to die?

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #XI (1790) Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 And am I only born to die? And must I suddenly comply With nature’s stern decree? What after death for me remains? Celestial joys, or hellish pains, To all eternity. 2 How then ought I on earth to live, While God prolongs the kind reprieve, And props the house of clay; My sole concern, my single care, To watch, and tremble, and prepare Against the fatal day! 3 No room for mirth or trifling here, For worldly hope, or worldly fear, If life so soon is gone; If now the Judge is at the door, And all mankind must stand before Th' inexorable throne! 4 No matter which my thoughts employ, A moment’s misery, or joy; But oh! when both shall end, Where shall I find my destin'd place, Shall I my everlasting days With fiends or angels spend? 5 Nothing is worth a thought beneath, But how I may escape the death That never, never dies! How make mine own election sure, And, when I fail on earth, secure A mansion in the skies. 6 Jesus, vouchsafe a pitying ray, Be thou my guide, be thou my way To glorious happiness! Ah! write the pardon on my heart, And whensoe’er I hence depart, Let me depart in peace. Languages: English

Thou Judge of quick and dead

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #XII (1790) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 Thou Judge of quick and dead, Before whose bar severe, With holy joy, or guilty dread, We all shall soon appear; Our caution'd souls prepare For that tremendous day, And fill us now with watchful care, And stir us up to pray: 2 To pray and wait the hour, That awful hour unknown, When robed in majesty and pow'r, Thou shalt from heav'n come down; Th' immortal Son of Man, To judge the human race, With all thy Father's dazzling train, With all thy glorious grace. 3 To damp our earthly joys, T' increase our gracious fears, For ever let th' archangel's voice Be sounding in our ears; The solemn midnight cry, "Ye dead, the Judge is come, "Arise, and meet him in the sky, "And meet your instant doom!" 4 O may we thus be found Obedient to his word, Attentive to the trumpet’s sound, And looking for our Lord! O may we thus ensure A lot among the blest, And watch a moment, to secure An everlasting rest! Languages: English

Lo! he comes with clouds descending

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #XIV (1790) Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 Lo! he comes with clouds descending, Once for favour'd sinners slain! Terrible thought! shall I alone

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #XVI (1790) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 Terrible thought! shall I alone, Who may be sav'd, shall I, Of all, alas! whom I have known Through sin for ever die? 2 While all my old companions dear, With whom I once did live, Joyful at God’s right hand appear A blessing to receive. 3 Shall I amidst a ghastly band, Dragg'd to the judgment-seat, Far on the left, with horror stand, My fearful doom to meet? 4 While they enjoy their Saviour's love, Must I in torments dwell? And howl (while they sing hymns above) And blow the flames of hell. 5 Ah! no; I still may turn and live, For still his wrath delays; He now vouchsafes a kind reprieve, And offers me his grace. 6 I will accept his offers now, From ev'ry sin depart, Perform my oft repeated vow, And render him my heart. 7 I will improve what I receive, The grace through Jesus given; Sure if with God on earth I live, To live with God in heaven. Thou God of glorious majesty

Hymnal: A Pocket hymn-book, designed as a constant companion for the pious #XVII (1790) Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 Thou God of glorious majesty, To thee, against myself, to thee, A worm of earth, I cry: A half-awaken'd child of man, An heir of endless bliss or pain, A sinner born to die! 2 Lo! on a narrow neck of land, ’Twixt two unbounded seas I stand, Secure, insensible; A point of time, a moment’s space, Removes me to that heav'nly place, Or shuts me up in hell. 3 O God mine inmost soul convert, And deeply on my thoughtful heart Eternal things impress; Give me to feel their solemn weight, And tremble on the brink of fate, And wake to righteousness. 4 Before me place in dread array, The pomp of that tremendous day, When thou with clouds shalt come To judge the nations at thy bar; And tell me, Lord, shall I be there To meet a joyful doom? 5 Be this my one great bus'ness here, With serious industry and fear Eternal bliss t'ensure; Thine utmost counsel to fulfil, And suffer all thy righteous will, And to the end endure. 6 Then, Saviour, then my soul receive Transported from this vale, to live And reign with thee above; Where faith is sweetly lost in sight, And hope in full, supreme delight, And everlasting love. O for a thousand tongues to sing

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn-book #1 (1793) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Awakening and Inviting Lyrics: 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing My dear Redeemer's praise! The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of his grace! 2 My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honours of thy name. 3 Jesus, the name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease: 'Tis music in the sinner's ears; 'Tis life, and health, and peace. 4 He breaks the power of cancell'd sin, He sets the pris'ner free; His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood avail'd me. 5 Look unto him, ye nations, own Your God, ye fallen race; Look, and be sav'd through faith alone, Be justify'd by grace! 6 See all your sins on Jesus laid! The Lamb of God was slain, His soul was once an off'ring made For ev'ry soul of man. 7 With me, your chief ye then shall know, Shall feel your sins forgiv'n; Anticipate your heav'n below, And own that love is heav'n.
