Psalm 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.1 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Judgment day First Line: Blest is the man who shuns the place Lyrics: Blest is the man who shuns the place Where sinners love to meet; Who fears to tread their wicked ways, And hates the scoffer's seat: But in the statutes of the Lord Has placed his chief delight; By day he reads or hears the word, And meditates by night. [He, like a plant of gen'rous kind, By living waters set, Safe from the storms and blasting wind, Enjoys a peaceful state.] Green as the leaf, and ever fair, Shall his profession shine While fruits of holiness appear Like clusters on the vine. Not so the impious and unjust; What vain designs they form! Their hopes are blown away like dust, Or chaff before the storm. Sinners in judgment shall not stand Amongst the sons of grace, When Christ, the Judge, at his right hand Appoints his saints a place. His eye beholds the path they tread, His heart approves it well But crooked ways of sinners lead Down to the gates of hell. Scripture: Psalm 1 Languages: English

Psalm 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.2 (1806) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Judgment day First Line: The man is ever blessed Lyrics: The man is ever blessed Who shuns the sinners' ways, Among their counsels never stands, Nor takes the scorner's place; But makes the law of God His study and delight, Amidst the labors of the day, And watches of the night. He like a tree shall thrive, With waters near the root; Fresh as the leaf his name shall live; His works are heav'nly fruit. Not so th' ungodly race, They no such blessings find; Their hopes shall flee, like empty chaff Before the driving wind. How will they bear to stand Before that judgment-seat, Where all the saints at Christ's right hand In full assembly meet? He knows, and he approves, The way the righteous go; But sinners and their works shall meet A dreadful overthrow. Scripture: Psalm 1 Languages: English

No more shall bold blasphemers say, "Judgment will ne'er begin;" No more abuse his long delay To impudence and sin. Throned on a cloud our God shall come, Bright flames prepare his way; Thunder and darkness, fire and storm, Lead on the dreadful day. Heav'n from above his call shall hear, Attending angels come, And earth and hell shall know and fear His justice and their doom. "But gather all my saints," he cries, "That made their peace with God By the Redeemer's sacrifice, And sealed it with his blood. "Their faith and works, brought forth to light Shall make the world confess, My sentence of reward is right, And heav'n adore my grace." Scripture: Psalm 50:1-6 Languages: English

Psalm 50 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.115 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Judgment day First Line: The Lord, the Judge, his churches warns Lyrics: The Lord, the Judge, his churches warns, Let hypocrites attend and fear, Who place their hope in rites and forms, But make not faith nor love their care. Vile wretches dare rehearse his name With lips of falsehood and deceit; A friend or brother they defame, And soothe and flatter those they hate. They watch to do their neighbors wrong, Yet dare to seek their Maker's face; They take his cov'nant on their tongue, But break his laws, abuse his grace. To heav'n they lift their hands unclean, Defiled with lust, defiled with blood; By night they practise every sin, By day their mouths draw near to God. And while his judgments long delay, They grow secure and sin the more; They think he sleeps as well as they, And put far off the dreadful hour. O dreadful hour! when God draws near And sets their crimes before their eyes! His wrath their guilty souls shall tear, And no deliv'rer dare to rise. Scripture: Psalm 50 Languages: English

Psalm 149

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.338 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Judgment day First Line: All ye that love the Lord, rejoice Lyrics: All ye that love the Lord, rejoice, And let your songs be new; Amidst the church with cheerful voice His later wonders show. The Jews, the people of his grace, Shall their Redeemer sing; And Gentile nations join the praise, While Zion owns her King. The Lord takes pleasure in the just, Whom sinners treat with scorn; The meek that lie despised in dust Salvation shall adorn. Saints should be joyful in their King, E'en on a dying bed; And like the souls in glory sing; For God shall raise the dead. Then his high praise shall fill their tongues Their hands shall wield the sword; And vengeance shall attend their songs, The vengeance of the Lord. When Christ the judgment-seat ascends, And bids the world appear, Thrones are prepared for all his friends Who humbly loved him here. Then shall they rule with iron rod Nations that dared rebel; And join the sentence of their God On tyrants doomed to hell. The royal sinners bound in chains New triumphs shall afford: Such honor for the saints remains; Praise ye, and love the Lord! Scripture: Psalm 149 Languages: English
