'Tis a Point I long to know

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCXCVIII (1791) Topics: Penitential Hymns Lyrics: 1 'Tis a Point I long to know, Oft it causes anxious Thought, Do I love the Lord or no? Am I His, or am I not? 2 If I love, why am I thus? Why this dull and lifeless Frame? Hardly, sure, can they be worse, Who have never heard his Name! 3 Could my Heart so hard remain, Pray'r a Task and Burden prove, Ev'ry Trifle give me Pain, If I knew a Saviour's Love? 4 When I turn my Eyes within, All is Dark and, Vain and Wild; Fill'd with Unbelief and Sin, Can I deem myself a Child? 5 If I pray, or hear, or read, Sin is mix'd with all I do; You that Love the LORD indeed, Tell me, is it thus with you? 6 Yet I mourn, my stubborn Will, Find my Sin a Grief and Thrall, Should I grieve at what I feel, If I did not love at all? 7 Could I joy his Saints to meet, Choose the Ways I once abhorr'd, Find at Times, the promise Sweet, If I did not love the LORD? 8 LORD, decide this doubtful Case! Thou, who art the People's Sun; Since upon thy Work of Grace, If indeed it be begun. 9 Let me love thee more and more, If I love at all, I'll pray; If I have not lov'd before, Help me to begin to Day. To the haven of thy breast

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn Book #XXXIII (1791) Topics: Penitential Lyrics: 1 To the haven of thy breast, O Son of man, I fly, Be my refuge and my rest, For O the storm is high! Save me from the furious blast, A covert from the tempest be; Hide me, Jesus, till o'erpast The storm of sin I see. 2 Welcome as the water-spring To a dry barren place: O descend on me, and bring The sweet-refreshing grace; O'er a parch'd and weary land, As a great rock extends its shade, Hide me, Saviour, with thine hand, And screen my naked head. 3 In the time of my distress Thou hast my succour been, In my utter helplessness Restraining me from sin; O how swiftly didst thou move, To save me in the trying hour! Still protect me with thy love, And shield me with thy pow'r. 4 First and last in me perform The work thou hast begun; Be my shelter from the storm, My shaddow from the sun: Let me hang upon my God, Till I thy perfect glory see, Till the sprinkling of thy blood Shall speak me up to thee. Weary of wand'ring from my God

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn Book #XXXII (1791) Topics: Penitential Lyrics: 1 Weary of wand'ring from my God, And now made willing to return, I hear, and bow me to the rod. For thee, not without hope, I mourn; I have an advocate above, A friend before the throne of love. 2 O Jesus, full of truth and grace; More full of grace than I of sin, Yet once again I seek thy face, Open thine arms and take me in, And freely my backslidings heal, And love the faithless sinner still. 3 Thou know'st the way to bring me back, My fallen spirit to restore; O! for thy truth and mercy's sake, Forgive and bid me sin no more! The ruins of my soul repair, And make my heart a house of pray'r. 4 Ah! give me, Lord, the tender heart, That trembles at th' approach of sin! A godly fear of sin impart; Implant and root it deep within! That I may dread thy gracious pow'r, And never dare to offend thee more. Languages: English

Hezekiah's Song; or, Sickness and Recovery

Hymnal: The Christians Duty, exhibited, in a series of Hymns #CCCXXVIII (1791) Topics: Penitential Hymns First Line: When we are rais'd from deep Distress Lyrics: 1 When we are rais'd from deep Distress, Our God deserves a Song; We take the Pattern of our Praise From Hezekiah's Tongue. 2 The Gates of the devouring Grave Are open'd wide in vain, If he that holds the Keys of Death Commands them fast again. 3 Pains of the Flesh are wont t' Abuse Our Mind with slavish Fears: Our Days are past, and we shall lose The Remnant of our Years. 4 We chatter with a Swallow's Voice, Or like a Dove we mourn, With Bitterness instead of Joys, Afflicted and forlorn. 5 Jehovah speaks the healing Word, And no Disease withstands; Fevers and Plagues obey the Lord, And fly at his Commands. 6 If half the Strings of Life should break, He can our Frame restore; He casts our Sins behind his Back, And they are found no more. Why should the children of a king

Hymnal: A Pocket Hymn Book #XXXVII (1791) Topics: Penitential Lyrics: 1 Why should the children of a king Go mourning all their days? Great comforter, descend, and bring The tokens of thy grace! 2 Dost thou not dwell in all thy saints, And seal the heirs of heav'n? When wilt thou banish my complaints, And shew my sins forgiv'n. 3 Assure my conscience of her part In the Redeemer's blood; And bear thy witness with my heart, That I am born of God. 4 Thou art the earnest of his love, The pledge of joys to come; May thy blest wings, celestial Dove, Safely convey me home.
