Longing for a place at the right hand of the Judge

Appears in 441 hymnals Topics: The Day of Judgment First Line: When thou my righteous judge shall come Lyrics: 1 When thou my righteous judge shall come To fetch thy ransom'd people home, Shall I among them stand? Shall such a worthless worm as I, Who sometimes am afraid to die, Be found at thy right hand? 2 I love to meet among them now, Before thy gracious feet to bow, Tho' vilest of them all; But can I bear the piercing thought? What if my name should be left out, When thou for them shalt call? 3 Prevent, prevent it by thy grace; Be thou, dear Lord, my hiding place, In this th' accepted day: Thy pardoning voice, O let me hear, To still my unbelieving fear; Nor let me fall I pray. 4 Let me among thy saints be found, Whene'er th' archangel's trump shall sound, To see thy smiling face; Then loudest of the crowd I'll sing, While heaven's resounding mansions ring With shouts of sovereign grace.

See where the great incarnate God

Appears in 21 hymnals Topics: Day of Judgment Lyrics: 1 See where the great incarnate God Fills a majestic Throne, While from the Skies his awful Voice Bears the Last Judgment down. [2 "I am the First, and I the Last, "Through endless Years the same; "I AM is my Memorial still, "And my Eternal Name. 3 "Such Favours as a God can give, "My Royal Grace bestows; "Ye thirsty Souls, come taste the Streams, "Where Life and Pleasure flows.] [4 "The Saint that triumphs o'er his Sins, "I'll own him for a Son; "The whole Creation shall reward "The Conquests he has won. 5 "But bloody Hands, and Hearts unclean, "And all the lying Race, "The faithless and the scoffing Crew, "That spurn at offer'd Grace; 6 "They shall be taken from my Sight, "Bound fast in Iron Chains, "And headlong plung'd into the Lake, "Where Fire and Darkness reigns."] 7 O may I stand before the Lamb, When Earth and Seas are fled! And hear the Judge pronounce my Name, With Blessings on my Head! 8 May I with those for ever dwell, Who here were my Delight, While Sinners banish'd down to Hell, No more offend my Sight. Psalm 50 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 102 hymnals Topics: Judgment day; Sinner and saint's portion; God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Sins of tongue; Formal worship; Obedience better than sacrifice; Professions false; Saints rewarded at last First Line: The Lord, the Judge, before his throne Lyrics: The Lord, the Judge, before his throne Bids the whole earth draw nigh, The nations near the rising sun, And near the western sky. No more shall bold blasphemers say, "Judgment will ne'er begin;" No more abuse his long delay To impudence and sin. Throned on a cloud our God shall come, Bright flames prepare his way; Thunder and darkness, fire and storm, Lead on the dreadful day. Heav'n from above his call shall hear, Attending angels come, And earth and hell shall know and fear His justice and their doom. "But gather all my saints," he cries, "That made their peace with God By the Redeemer's sacrifice, And sealed it with his blood. "Their faith and works, brought forth to light Shall make the world confess, My sentence of reward is right, And heav'n adore my grace." Scripture: Psalm 50:1-6

Hypocrisy exposed

Appears in 51 hymnals Topics: God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Incarnation and sacrifice of Christ; Judgment Day; Obedience better than sacrifice; Profession false; Saints Reward at last; Sins of tongue; God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Incarnation and sacrifice of Christ; Judgment Day; Obedience better than sacrifice; Profession false; Saints Reward at last; Sins of tongue First Line: The Lord, the Judge his churches warns Lyrics: 1 The Lord, the Judge his churches warns, Let hypocrites attend and fear, Who place their hope in rites and forms, But make not faith nor love their care. 2 Vile wretches dare rehearse his name With lips of falsehood and deceit; A friend or brother they defame, And sooth and flatter those they hate. 3 They watch to do their neighbours wrong, Yet dare to seek their Maker's face; They take his covenant on their tongue, But break his laws, abuse his grace. 4 To heaven they lift their hands unclean, Defil'd with lust, defil'd with blood; By night they practise every sin, By day their mouths draw near to God. 5 And while his judgments long delay, They grow secure and sin the more; They think he sleeps as well as they, And put far off the dreadful hour. 7 Oh dreadful hour! when God draws near, And sets their crimes before their eyes! His wrath their guilty souls shall tear, And no deliverer dare to rise. Scripture: Psalm 50

The Last Judgment

Appears in 33 hymnals Topics: Formal worship; God the judge; Hypocrites and hypocrisy; Judgment Day; Obedience better than sacrifice; Profession false; Saints Reward at last; Sin of Tongue First Line: The Lord the Sov'reign, sends his Summons forth Lyrics: 1 The Lord, the Sov'reign, sends his Summons forth, Calls the South Nations, and awakes the North; From East to West the sounding Orders spread, Thro' distant Worlds and Regions of the Dead: No more shall Atheists mock his long Delay; His vengeance sleeps no more: Behold the Day. 2 Behold the Judge descends; his Guards are nigh; Tempest and Fire attend him down the Sky: Heav'n, Earth, and Hell, draw near; let all Things come To hear his Justice, and the Sinner's Doom; But gather first my Saints (the Judge commands) Bring 'em, ye Angels, from their distant Lands. 3 Behold my Cov'nant stands for ever good, Seal'd by th' eternal Sacrifice in Blood, And sign'd with all their Names; the Greek, the Jew, That paid the ancient Worship or the new, There's no Distinction here; come, spread their Thrones, And near me seat my Fav'rites and my Sons. 4 I their Almighty Saviour and their GOD, I am their Judge; ye Heav'ns, proclaim abroad My just eternal Sentence, and declare Those awful Truths that Sinners dread to hear; Sinners in Zion, tremble and retire; I doom the painted Hypocrite to Fire. 5 Not for the Want of Goats or Bullocks slain Do I condemn thee; Bulls and Goats are vain Without the Flames of Love; In vain the Store Of brutal Off'rings that were mine before; Mine are the tamer Beasts and savage Breed, Flocks, Herds, and Fields and Forests where they feed. 6 If I were hungry, wou'd I ask thee Food? When did I thirst, or drink thy Bullocks Blood? Can I be flatter'd with thy cringing Bows, Thy solemn Chatt'rings and fantastick Vows; Are my Eyes charm'd thy Vestments to behold? Glaring in Gems, and gay in woven Gold? 7 Unthinking Wretch! how could'st thou hope to please, A GOD, a Spirit, with such Toys as these; While with my Grace & Statutes on thy Tongue, Thou lov'st Deceit, and dost thy Brother wrong, In vain to pious Forms thy Zeal pretends, Thieves and Adult'rers are thy chosen Friends. 8 Silent I waited with long-suffEring Love, But didst thou hope that I should ne'er reprove? And cherish such an impious thought within? That GOD the Righteous, would indulge thy Sin? Behold my Terrors now; my Thunders roll, And thy own Crimes affright thy guilty Soul. 9 Sinners, awake betimes; ye Fools, be wise; Awake before this dreadful Morning rise; Change your vain Thoughts, your crooked Works amend; Fly to the Saviour, make the Judge your Friend; Lest like a Lion, his last Vengeance tear Your trembling Souls, and no Deliv'rer near. Scripture: Psalm 50

Springs and Streams no Longer Bless

Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 5 hymnals Topics: Day Of Prayer; Deliverance From Trouble; Goodness of God; Judgment; Name Of God; God in Nature; Providence of God Lyrics: 1 Springs and streams no longer bless All the dry and thirsty land; Fertile fields in verdant dress God converts to desert sand; For that they who dwell therein Turn to wickedness and sin. 2 Once again the waters well, All the desert blossoms fair; There He makes the hungry dwell, There a city they prepare, Plant their vines and sow their fields, And the earth her increase yields. 3 Now He blessed them indeed, They are greatly multiplied; On the hills their cattle feed, Fast increasing, spreading wide; Then again they are brought low Through oppression, grief, and woe. 4 His contempt the princes taste; Driven out they helpless fly, Wandering in the trackless waste; But He lifts the needy high, Where no evil shall annoy, And with children gives him joy. 5 When His righteous judgments come, Strong to bless and to destroy, All iniquity is dumb, All the righteous sing for joy; Who Jehovah wisely heed, In His works His mercy read. Day of wrath that ends the ages!

Author: Dr. A. H. Reynar, 1840-; Thomas of Celano, d. 1255 Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: The Christian Life Time, Death, Eternity; Day Of Wrath; Judgment Lyrics: 1 Day of wrath that ends the ages! All-consuming fire rages! As foretold by saints and sages. 2 Day to men of fear and trembling, When before the Judge assembling, And each sinful deed rememb'ring. 3 Silent tombs are trumpet-shaken Sleeping dead, surprised, awaken All before the throne are taken. 4 With the last assize beginning, Open stands all secret sinning No offence exemption winning. 5 How excuse my ill behaviour? Who for me can now win favour, When e'en just men need a Saviour? 6 Terrors manifold surround Thee, Yet have sinners gracious found Thee, Throw Thine arm of mercy round me. 7 Jesus, shed Thy mercy on me, Thou didst take my flesh upon Thee; Bid me not at last go from Thee. 8 Toilsomely my soul Thou soughtest, On the cross my life Thou boughtest, Lose not that for which Thou foughtest. 9 Mary's sins by Thee remitted, And the thief to bliss admitted, Plead my hope may be permitted. 10 Let that day of lamentation Usher in Thy new creation, Manifest Thy great salvation! Used With Tune: REYNAR
