Each day we live the Christian life

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander, 1818-1895; McCaughan; James Alexander, b. 1954 Hymnal: The Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook #462 (2004) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Each day we live the Christian life we're sorely tried — without, within; but God the Spirit gives us strength to wage a constant war with sin. 2 It's in our weakness that we find He gives the help we greatly need to honour Christ in all our ways, as from the power of sin we're freed. 3 When deep within our swelling hearts the thoughts of pride and envy rise, when bitter words are on our tongues and tears of passion in our eyes, 4 He helps us keep our self-control; sends grace to check the hasty word; give gentle answers back again and fight a battle for our Lord. 5 So far as it depends on us, we'll live in peace as Christians should; we'll not be overcome by wrong, but overcome all wrong with good. 6 All His disciples on this earth have their own painful cross to take but, in the Holy Spirit's power, we'll live our lives for Jesus' sake. Here In Thy Name, Eternal God

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #515 (1930) Meter: 8.8.8.8 First Line: Here, in Thy name, eternal God Lyrics: 1 Here in Thy name, eternal God, We build this earthly house to Thee; O choose it for Thy fixed abode And keep it from all error free. 2 Here, when Thy people seek Thy face And dying sinners pray to live, Hear Thou in heav'n, Thy dwelling place, And when Thou hearest, Lord, forgive. 3 Here, when Thy messengers proclaim The blessed Gospel of Thy Son, Still, by the pow'r of His great name, Be mighty signs and wonders done. 4 Thy glory never hence depart; Yet choose not, Lord, this house alone; Thy kingdom come to ev'ry heart; In ev'ry bosom fix Thy throne. We are but little children weak

Author: Mrs. Cecil Frances Alexander, 1823-1895 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #589 (1917) Lyrics: 1 We are but little children weak, Nor born in any high estate; What can we do for Jesus' sake, Who is so high, and good, and great! 2 When deep within our swelling heart The thoughts of pride and anger rise, When bitter words are on our tongues, And tears of passion in our eyes 3 Then we may stay the angry blow, Then we may check the hasty word, Give gentle answers back again, And fight a battle for our Lord. 4 With smiles of peace and looks of love Light in our dwellings we may make, Bid kind good humour brighten there, And still do all for Jesus' sake. 5 There's not a child so small and weak But has his little cross to take, His little work of love and praise That he may do for Jesus' sake. O Lord, the Holy Innocents

Author: C. F. Alexander Hymnal: The Church Hymnal #607 (1920) Lyrics: 1 O Lord, the Holy Innocents Laid down for Thee their infant life, And martyrs brave and patient saints Have stood for Thee in fire and strife. 2 We wear the cross they wore of old, Our lips have learned like vows to make; We need not die; we cannot fight; What may we do for Jesus' sake? 3 O day by day each Christian child Has much to do, without, within; A death to die for Jesus' sake, A weary war to wage with sin. 4 When deep within our swelling hearts, The thoughts of pride and anger rise, When bitter words are on our tongues, And tears of passion in our eyes; 5 Then we may stay the angry blow, Then we may check the hasty word, Give gentle answers back again, And fight a battle for our Lord. 6 With smiles of peace and looks of love, Light in our dwellings we may make, Bid kind good-humor brighten there, And do all still for Jesus' sake. 7 There's not a child so weak and small But has his little cross to take, His little work of love and praise, That he may do for Jesus' sake.
