Slowly, Slowly Darkening

Author: Samuel Greg Meter: 7.6.7.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Slowly, slowly darkening The evening hours roll on; And soon behind the cloud-land Will sink my setting sun. 2. Around my path life’s mysteries Their deepening shadows throw; And as I gaze and ponder, They dark and darker grow. 3. But there’s a voice above me Which says, Wait, trust and pray; The night will soon be over, And light will come with day. 4. Father! the light and darkness Are both alike to Thee; Then to Thy waiting servant, Alike they both shall be. 5. The great unending future, I cannot pierce its shroud; Yet nothing doubt, nor tremble, God’s bow is on the cloud. 6. To Him I yield my spirit, On Him I lay my load; Fear ends with death; beyond it I nothing see but God. 7. Thus moving towards the darkness I calmly wait His call, Now seeing, fearing—nothing; But hoping, trusting—all! Used With Tune: IMPLICIT TRUST Text Sources: Written in the midst of affliction, Sept. 1868, and pub. in his Layman's Legacy 1877...entitled "The Mystery of Life" (Julian, p. 466).

The Pilgrim

Author: Rozzel Meter: 7.6.7.6 Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: Amidst ten thousand dangers Lyrics: 1 Amidst ten thousand dangers, Which everywhere abound, The pilgrims and the strangers Alone secure are found; For on their Lord they’re waiting, They seek him night and day; His aid they’re supplicating In his appointed way. 2 [How signal are the blessings My Saviour has bestowed! He taught me wisdom’s lessons, When I had lost the road. From death he has me raisèd, By his almighty power; Let his great name be praisèd, Both now and evermore.] 3 Through Christ, the Mediator, To God access we find; The Spirit’s own dictator, Who knows the Father’s mind. Thus through this world of trouble His saints in safety go; They count the world a bubble, All vanity below. Topics: Tribulation and Inconstancy of Mind

From Distant Shores Returning

Author: H. Brueckner; C. Barth Meter: 7.6.7.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 From distant shores returning, The pilgrim journeys home; For rest His soul is yearning, He would no longer roam. 2 A flowered grave encloses What he had held so dear; He sees the wilting roses, And looks beyond for cheer. 3 Great cities often glory In boundless wealth of gold, But soon the doleful story Of their decay is told. 4 The harps sweet tones are waning Upon the silent air, Nor day nor night retaining That melody so fair. 5 The pilgrim who the pleasures Of yonder world can taste, Cares naught for earthly treasures, That soon will go to waste. 6 He longs for things immortal, For joys that ne'er decay, And so to heaven's portal He fondly wends his way. Topics: Meditation Used With Tune: VIATOR
