At length, by certain proofs, 'tis plain

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #LXXIII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 At length, by certain Proofs, 'tis plain That GOD will to his Saints be kind; That all whose Hearts are pure and clean, Shall his protecting Favour find. 'Till this sustaining Truth I knew, My stagg'ring Feet had almost fail'd; I griev'd, the Sinner's Wealth to view, And envy'd when the Fools prevail'd. 2 They to the Grave in Peace descend, And, whilst they live, are hale and strong; No Plague of Troubles them offend, Which oft to other Men belong. With Pride, as with a Chain, they're held, And Rapine seems their Robe of State; Their Eyes stand out, with Fatness swell'd; They grow, beyond their Wishes, great. 3 With Hearts corrupt and lofty Talk, Oppressive Methods they defend; Their Tongue thro' all the Earth does walk, Their Blasphemies to Heav'n ascend, And yet admiring Crouds are found, Who servile Visits duly make; Because with Plenty they abound, Of which their flatt'ring Slaves partake. 4 Their fond Opinion these pursue, 'Till they, with them, profanely cry "How should the LORD our Actions view? "Can He perceive, who dwells so high"? Behold the Wicked, these are they, Who openly their sins profess; And yet their Wealth's encreas'd each Day, And all their Actions meet Success. 5 "Then have I cleans'd my Heart, said I, "And wash'd my Hands from Guilt in vain, "If all the Day oppress'd I lie, "And ev'ry Morning suffer Pain." Thus did I once to speak intend, But if such Things I rashly say, Thy Children, LORD, I must offend, And basely should their Cause betray. Part II 6 To fathom this my Thoughts I bent; But found the Case too hard for me, 'Till to the House of GOD I went, Then I their End did plainly see. How high soe'er advanc'd, they all On slipp'ry Places loosely stand; Thence into Ruin headlong fall, Cast down by thy avenging Hand. 7 How dreadful and how quick their Fate! Despis'd by thee, when they're destroy'd; As waking Men, with Scorn do treat The Fancies that their Dreams employ'd. Thus was my Heart with Grief oppress'd, My Reins were rack'd with restless Pains; So stupid was I, like a Beast, Who no reflecting Thought retains. 8 Yet still thy Presence me supply'd, And thy Right-Hand Assistance gave; Thou first shalt with thy Counsel guide And then to Glory me receive. Whom then in Heaven, but thee alone, Have I, whose Favour I require? Throughout the spacious Earth, there's none That I besides thee can desire. 9 My trembling Flesh, and aching Heart, May often fail to succour me; But GOD shall inward Strength impart, And my eternal Portion be. For they that far from thee remove, Shall into sudden Ruin fall, If after other GODS they rove, Thy Vengeance shall destroy them all. 10 But as for me, 'tis good and just, That I should still to GOD repair; In him I always put my Trust, And will His wond'rous Works declare. Scripture: Psalm 73 Languages: English Tune Title: [At length, by certain proffs, 'tis plain]

Bless'd is he, who fears the LORD

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Bless'd is he, who fears the LORD, And does his Laws obye, Great his Seed shall be on Earth, His Race shall not decay. Crown'd with Wealth his House shall be, To Mercy still inclin'd; Though in Trouble, he shall shine, The Blessing of Mankind. 2 Ort he lendeth to the Poor, His Words are always just; And his Glory shall survive, Though he should sleep in Dust. Him ill Tidings shall not move, Whose Heart on GOD relies; But in Safety see the Fall Of all his Enemies. 3 To the Needy he bestows, And doth their Wants supply; Thus his Righteousness shall last, His Horn be rais'd on high. This the Wicked shall behold, And gnash their Teeth in Pain; Whilst their Hopes but fruitless prove, And all their Wishes vain. The Day of Judgment

Author: Newton Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #DLXXVII (1792) Topics: The Day of Judgment First Line: Day of judgment, day of wonders Lyrics: 1 Day of judgment, day of wonders! Hark the trumpet's awful sound, Louder than a thousand thunders, Shakes the vast creation round! How the summons Will the sinner's heart confound! 2 See the judge our nature wearing, Cloth'd in majesty divine! You who long for his appearing, Then shall say, "This God is mine!" Gracious savior, Own me on that day for thine! 3 At his call, the dead awaken, Rise to life from earth and sea; All the powers of nature, shaken By his looks, prepare to flee: Careless sinner, What will then become of thee? 4 Horrors past imagination, Will surprise your trembling heart, When you hear your condemnation, "Hence, accursed wretch, depart! "Thou with satan, "And his angels, have thy part!" 5 But to those who have confessed, Lov'd and serv'd the Lord, below; He will say, "come near, ye blessed, "See the kingdom I bestow: "You for ever "Shall my Love and glory know." 6 Under sorrows and Reproaches, May this thought our courage raise! Swiftly God's great day approaches, Sighs shall then be chang'd to praise: May we triumph When the World is in a a blaze. Languages: English

The Last Judgment

Author: Dr. S. Stennett Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #DLXXVIII (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Day of Judgment First Line: He comes! he comes! to judge the world Lyrics: 1 He comes! he comes! to judge the world, Aloud th' archangel cries: While thunders roll from pole to pole, And lightnings cleave the skies. 2 Th' affrighted nations hear the sound, And upward lift their eyes: The slumb'ring tenants of the ground In living armies rise. 3 Amid the shouts of numerous friends, Of hosts divinely bright, The judge in solemn pomp descends, Array'd in robes of light. 4 His head and hairs are white as snow, His eyes a fiery flame, A radiant crown adorns his brow, And Jesus is his name. 5 Writ on his thigh his name appears, And scars his victo'ies tell: Lo! in his hand the conqu'ror bears The keys of death and hell. 6 So he ascends the judgment-seat, And at his dread command, Myriads of creatures round his feet In solemn silence stand. 7 Princes and peasants here expect Their, last, their righteous doom; The men who dar'd his grace reject, And they who dar'd presume. 8 "Depart, ye sons of death and sin," The injur'd Jesus cries, While the long-kindling wrath within Flames from both his eyes. 9 And now in words divinely sweet, With rapture in his face, Aloud his sacred lips repeat The sentence of his grace: 10 "Well done, my good and faithful sons. "The children of my love; "Receive the sceptres, crowns and thrones "Prepar'd for you above." Languages: English

How blest is he who ne'er consents to walk

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 How blest is he, who ne'er consents to walk By ill Advice nor dares to stand and talk In Sinners' Way, their Vice and Cause maintaining Nor sits with Scorners, Things divine profaning: But in GOD's sacred Law takes great Delight, Still reads by Day and meditates by Night. 2 Like some fair Tree, fix'd by the River's Side, Which bends with Fruit, and spreads its Foliage wide; So shall he flourish, Heav'n his Cause defending, And sweet Success his good Designs attending: In vain the Tempest strives to shake his Leaf, The Son of Joy breaks thro' the clouds of Grief. 3 Not to the Wicked; they no Root shall find, But fly like Chaff before the rapid Wind. The Lord hath not their evil Ways approved, Their Race shall therefore from the Earth be moved. They shall not stand in GOD's most holy Sight, Who only loves the Man that seeketh Right. 4 When GOD with Glory shall in Judgment come, A conscious Guilt shall strike the Sinner dumb; Nor to the Wicked will he grant a Station, Among the pure and righteous Congregation: The Ways of Justice, thus, to Bliss shall tend, Whilst Sinners' Paths must in their Ruin end. Scripture: Psalm 1 Languages: English Tune Title: [How blest is he, who ne'er consents to walk]

How good and pleasant must it be

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XCII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 How good and pleasant must it be To thank the LORD most high; And with repeated Hymns of Praise, His Name to magnify: With ev'ry Morning's early Dawn, His Goodness to relate; And of his constant Truth, each Night The glad Effects repeat. 2 To ten string'd Instruments we'll sing, With tuneful Psalt'ries join'd, And to the Harp, with solemn Sounds, For sacred Use design'd: For through thy wond'rous Works, O Lord, Thou mak'st my Heart rejoice; The Thoughts of them shall make me glad, And shout with chearful Voice. 3 How wond'rous are thy Works, O LORD! How deep are thy Decrees! Whose winding Tracks, in Cecret laid, No stupid Sinner sees: He little thinks, when wicked Men, Like Grass, look fresh and gay; How soon their short liv'd Splendor must, For ever pass away. 4 But thou, my GOD, art still most high; And all thy lofty Foes, Who thought they might securely sin, Shall be o'erwhelm'd with Woes: Whilst thou exalt'st my Sov'reign Pow'r, And mak'st it largely spread; And with refreshing Oil anoint'st My consecrated Head. 5 I soon shall see my stubborn Foes To utter Ruin brought; And hear the dismal End of those Who have against me fought: But righteous Men, like fruitful Palms, Shall make a glorious Show; As Cedars that on Lebanon In stately Order grow. 6 These planted in the House of GOD, Within his Courts shall thrive; Their Vigour and their Lustre both Shall in old Age revive. Thus will the LORD his Justice shew; And GOD, my strong Defence, Shall due Rewards to all the World Impartially dispense. Scripture: Psalm 92 Languages: English Tune Title: [How good and pleasant must it be]

Sinners and Saints in the Wreck of Nature

Author: President Davies Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #DLXX (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Day of Judgment First Line: How great, how terrible that God Lyrics: 1 How great, how terrible that God, Who shakes creation with his nod! He frowns—earth, sea, all nature's frame Sink in one universal flame. 2 Where now, O where shall sinners seek For shelter in the general wreck; Shall falling rocks be o'er them thrown? See rocks, like snow, desolving down. 3 In vain for mercy now they cry; In lakes of liquid fire they lie; There on the flaming billows tost, For ever—O forever lost. 4 But saints, undaunted and serene Your eyes view the dreadful scene; Your savior lives, the worlds expire, And earth and skies desolve in fire. 5 Jesus, the helpless creature's friend, To thee my all I dare commend. Thou canst preserve my feeble soul, When Lightnings blaze from pole to pole. Languages: English

In thee, O LORD, my Hope I place

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #VII (1767) Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 In thee, O LORD! my Hope I place, Let not thy Servant meet Disgrace; From him who would my Ruin see, Do thou, my GOD, deliver me: 2 Lest like a Lion he devour My helpless Soul, with savage Pow'r, And plunge me into black Despair, If no Deliv'rer should appear. 3 LORD, if to Malice I incline, Or do against his Peace design; If I have e'er promoted Strive, Or practis'd aught aganist his Life; 4 Nay, if I have not oft restor'd My Foe, when he my Help implor'd, And spar'd his Life, and set him free, Ev'n tho' he persecuted me: 5 Then let mine Enemy pursue, And by his Strength my Life subdue; My soul to him become a Prey, And in the Dust mine Honour lay. 6 Arise, O LORD, thine Anger shew; Thy Vengeance turn against my Foe: In my Defence do thou engage, And punish with insulting Rage. 7 So, Crowds thy Goodness shall adore, And in Distress thy Aid implore: Then for their Sakes, do thou, O LORD! Resume thy Seat, and Help afford. 8 Thou who dost Justice still observe, According as I do deserve, So let thy righteous Sentence be; For I my Cause resign to thee. 9 Do thou root out and undermine All those, who wicked Arts design; But let the Just be ne'er o'erthrown; Thou GOD< to whom all Hearts are known. 10 In his Protection I confide, Who is my Safety and my Guide; The LORD not only takes my Part, But their's who have an upright Heart. 11 He daily lays up Wrath for those Who boldly dare his Pow'r oppose; Fro he's a righteous Judge, and will Severely punish ev'ry Ill. 12 He whets his Sword,, if they persist, Oh! who can his strong Arm resist? For them his Bow is raady bent, And charg'd with Death his Shafts are sent. 13 My Foe doth secret Plots prepare, And would my harmless Life ensnare; His base Intentions prove to be Falshood, Deceit and Treachery. 14 But all his Arts are try'd in vain; For he shall ne'er his Purpose gain: The Pit which he design'd for me, Shall sure his own Destruction be. 15 On his own Head his Spite returns; His Heart with constant Malice burns, To find himself within that Snare, Which for my Soul he did prepare. 16 Therefore to GOD I'll offer Praise, And still pursue his righteous Ways; His Providence I will proclaim, And celebrate his holy Name. Scripture: Psalm 7 Languages: English Tune Title: [In thee, O Lord, my hope I place]

Thousand thousand saints attending, Swell the triumph of his train: Hallelujah!
