He lives, and blessed be my Rock! The God of my salvation lives: The dark designs of hell are broke; Sweet is the peace my Father gives. Psalm 18 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.41 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Salvation and triumph; Triumph for salvation First Line: We love thee, Lord, and we adore Lyrics: We love thee, Lord, and we adore; Now is thine arm revealed: Thou art our strength, our heav'nly tower, Our bulwark, and our shield. We fly to our eternal Rock, And find a sure defence; His holy name our lips invoke, And draw salvation thence. When God, our Leader, shines in arms, What mortal heart can bear The thunder of his loud alarms, The lightning of his spear? He rides upon the winged wind, And angels in array In millions wait to know his mind, And swift as flames obey. He speaks, and at his fierce rebuke Whole armies are dismayed; His voice, his frown, his angry look, Strikes all their courage dead. He forms our generals for the field, With all their dreadful skill; Gives them his awful sword to wield, And makes their hearts of steel. [He arms our captains to the fight, (Though there his name's forgot; He girded Cyrus with his might, But Cyrus knew him not.) Oft has the Lord whole nations blessed For his own church's sake; The powers that give his people rest, Shall of his care partake.] Scripture: Psalm 18 Languages: English

Great God, I own thy Sentence just

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.VI (1766) Topics: Triumph over Death Lyrics: 1 Great God, I own thy Sentence just, And Nature must decay, I yield my Body to the Dust, To dwell with Fellow-Clay. 2 Yet Faith may Triumph o'er the Grave, And Trample on the Tombs: My Jesus, my Redeemer lives, My God, my Saviour comes. 3 The mighty Conqu'ror shall appear High on a Royal Seat, And Death, the last of all his Foes, Lie vanquish'd at his Feet. 4 Though greedy Worms devour my Skin, And gnaw my wasting Flesh, When God shall build my Bones again, He clothes 'em all afresh: 5 Then shall I see thy lovely Face With strong immortal Eyes, And feast upon thy unknown Grace With Pleasure and Surprize. What mighty Man, or mighty God

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #I.XXVIII (1766) Topics: Triumph of Christ over our Enemies Lyrics: 1 What mighty Man, or mighty God, Comes travelling in State, Along the Idumean Road, away from Bozrah's Gate. 2 The Glory of his Robes proclaim 'Tis some victorious King: "'Tis I, the Just, th' almighty One, "That your Salvation bring." 3 Why, mighty Lord, thy Saints enquire, Why thine Apparel red? And all thy Vesture stain'd like those, Who in the Wine-press tread? 4 "I by myself have trod the Press, "And crush'd my Foes alone; "My Wrath has struck the Rebels dead, "My Fury stamp'd them down. 5 "'Tis Edom's Blood that dyes my Robes "With joyful Scarlet Stains; "The Triumph that my Raiment wears, "Sprung from their bleeding Veins. 6 "Thus shall the Nations be destroy'd, "That dare insult my Saints; "I have an Arm t' avenge their Wrongs, "An Ear for their Complaints." Come let us lift our Voices high

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #III.XXI (1766) Topics: Feast of Triumph Lyrics: [1 Come, let us lift our voices high, High as our Joys arise, And join the Songs above the sky, Where {leasure never dies. 2 Jesus, the God that fought and bled, And conquer'd when he fell; That rose, and at his Chariot Wheels Dragg'd all the Pow'rs of Hell. [3 Jesus, our God, invites us here To this triumphal Feast, And brings immortal Blessings down For each redeemed Guest.] 4 The Lord! how glorious is his Face! How kind his Smiles appear! And, O! what melting Words he says To every humble Ear! 5 "For you, the Children of my Love, It was for you I dy'd, Behold my Hands, behold my Feet, And look into my Side. 6 "These are the Wounds for you I bore, The Tokens of my Pains, When I came down to free your Soul From Misery and Chains. [7 "Justice unsheath'd its fiery Sword, "And plung'd it in my Heart; "Infinite Pangs for you I bore, "And most tormenting Smart. 8 "When Hell, and all its spiteful Pow'rs, "Stood dreadful in my Way, "To rescue those dear Lives of yours, "I gave my own away. 9 "But while I bled, and groan'd, and dy'd, "I ruin'd Satan's Throne; "High on my Cross I hung, and spy'd "The Monster tumbling down. 10 "Now you must triumph at my Feast, "And taste my flesh, my Blood, "And live eternal Ages blest, "For 'tis immortal Food." 11 Victorious God! What can we pay For Favours so divine? We would devote our Hearts away To be for ever thine.] 12 We give Thee, Lord, our highest Praise, The Tribute of our Tongues; But Themes so infinite as these Exceed our noblest Songs. Thee will I love, O Lord, my Strength

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P18a (1766) Topics: Salvation and triumph; Triumph for salvation Lyrics: 1 Thee will I love, O Lord, my Strength, My Rock, my Tow'r, my high Defence; Thy mighty Arm shall be my Trust, For I have found Salvation thence. 2 Death, and the Terrors of the Grave, Stood round me with their dismal Shade; While Floods of high Temptations rose, And made my sinking Soul afraid. 3 I saw the op'ning Gates of Hell With endless Pains and Sorrows there, (Which none but they that feel can tell) While I was hurry'd to despair. 4 In my Distress I call'd my GOD, When I could scarce believe him mine; He bow'd his Ear to my Complaint; Then did his Grace appear divine. 5 [With Speed he flew to my Relief, As on a Cherub's Wing he rode; Awful and bright as Lightning shone The Face of my Deliv'rer GOD. 6 Temptations fled at his Rebuke, The Blast of his Almighty Breath; He sent Salvation from on high, And drew me from the Deeps of Death.] 7 Great were my Fears, my Foes were great, Much was their Strength, and more their Rage; But Christ, my Lord, is Conqu'ror still In all the Wars that Devils wage. 8 My Song for ever shall record That terrible, that joyful Hour; And give the Glory to the Lord Due to his Mercy and his Power. Lord, thou hast seen my Soul sincere

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P18b (1766) Topics: Salvation and triumph; Triumph for salvation Lyrics: 1 Lord, thou hast seen my Soul sincere, Hast made thy Truth and Love appear; Before mine Eyes I set thy Laws, And thou hast own'd my righteous Cause. 2 Since I have learn'd thy holy Ways, I've walk'd upright before thy Face; Or if my Feet did e'er depart, 'Twas never with a wicked Heart. 3 What sore Temptations broke my Rest! What Wars and Strugglings in my Breast! But thro' thy Grace, that reigns within I guard against my darling Sin. 4 That Sin which close besets me still, That works and strives against my Will; When shall thy Spirit's Sov'reign Pow'r Destroy it that it rise no more? 5 With an impartial Hand the Lord Deals out to Mortals their Reward; The kind and faithful Soul shall find A GOD as faithful and as kind. 6 The Just and Pure shall ever say, Thou art more pure, more just than they; And Men that love Revenge, shall know God hath an Arm of Vengeance too.
