Captain of Israel's Host

Author: Charles Wesley Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #51 (1985) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Topics: City of God First Line: Captain of Israel's host and guide Lyrics: 1 Captain of Israel's host and guide of all who seek the land above, beneath thy shadow we abide, the cloud of thy protecting love; our strength, thy grace; our rule, thy word; our end, the glory of the Lord. 2 By thine unerring Spirit led, we shall not in the desert stray; we shall not full direction need, nor miss our providential way; as far from danger as from fear while love, almighty love, is near. 3 We've no abiding city here, but seek a city out of sight; thither our steady course we steer, aspiring to the plains of light: Jerusalem the saints' abode, whose founder is the living God. Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

Author: John Newton Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #393 (1985) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: City of God Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he, whose word cannot be broken, formed thee for his own abode; on the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, thou mayst smile at all thy foes. 2 See the streams of living water springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove; who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage, grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in their Redeemer's blood, Jesus, whom their souls rely on, makes them kings and priests to God. 'Tis his love his people raises over self to reign as kings, and as priests, his solemn praises each for a thank-off'ring brings. 4 Savior, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity-- I will glory in thy name; fading are the worldling's pleasures, all their boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion's children know. It Is God Who Holds the Nations

Author: Fred Pratt Green Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #495 (1985) Meter: 15.15.15.7 Topics: City of God First Line: It is God who holds the nations in the hollow of his hand Lyrics: 1 It is God who hold the nations in the hollow of his hand; it is God whose light is shining in the darkness of the land; it is God who builds his City on the Rock and not on sand: may the living God be praised! 2 It is God whose purpose summons us to use the present hour, who recalls us to our senses when a nation's life turns sour; in the discipline of freedom we shall know his saving power: may the living God be praised! 3 When a thankful nation, looking back, has cause to celebrate those who win our admiration by their service to the state, when self-giving is a measure of the greatness of the great, may the living God be praised! 4 God reminds us every sunrise that the world is ours on lease - for the sake of life tomorrow may our love for it increase; may all races live together, share its riches, be at peace: may the living God be praised! In Our Day of Thanksgiving

Author: W. H. Draper Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #574 (1985) Meter: 13.12.13.11 Topics: City of God First Line: In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer Lyrics: 1 In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer for the saints who before us have found their reward; when the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, but now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord. 2 In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, he called them away from our worship below; but love, in the Wod, at the font, and on the altar had girt them with grace for the way they should go. 3 These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, and dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, and still they were seeking the city of God. 4 Sing praise, then, for all who here sought and here found him, whose journey is ended, whose perils are past; they believed in the light; and its glory is round them where the clouds of earth’s sorrows are lifted at last. Oh what their joy and their glory must be

Author: Peter Abelard, 1079-1142; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: The Book of Praise #608 (1997) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: City / City of God Lyrics: 1 Oh what their joy and their glory must be, those endless Sabbaths the blessed ones see, crowns for the valiant, to weary ones rest: God shall be all and in all ever blest. 2 Truly, "Jerusalem" name we that shore, city of peace that brings joy evermore; wish and fulfillment are not severed there, nor do things prayed for come short of the prayer. 3 There, where no troubles distraction can bring, we the sweet anthems of Zion shall sing, while for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise thy blessed people eternally raise. 4 Now, in the meantime, with hearts raised on high, we for that country must yearn and must sigh, seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, through our long exile on Babylon's strand. 5 Low before God with our praises we fall, of whom, and in whom, and through whom are all; of whom, the Father, and through whom, the Son, in whom, the Spirit, with these ever One. Scripture: Psalm 92 Languages: English Tune Title: O QUANTA QUALIA
