As water to the thirsty

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Meter: 7.6.7.6.6.6.4.4.6 Appears in 15 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:11-17 Lyrics: 1 As water to the thirsty, as beauty to the eyes, as strength that follows weakness, as truth instead of lies, as songtime and springtime and summertime to be, so is my Lord, my living Lord, so is my Lord to me. 2 Like calm in place of clamour, like peace that follows pain, like meeting after parting, like sunshine after rain, like moonlight and starlight and sunlight on the sea, so is my Lord, my living Lord, so is my Lord to me. 3 As sleep that follows fever, as gold instead of grey, as freedom after bondage, as sunrise to the day, as home to the traveller and all we long to see, so is my Lord, my living Lord, so is my Lord to me. Topics: Creation; Second Sunday Before Lent Year C; Lent III Year C; Proper 9 Year C Used With Tune: OASIS

O Ye Mountains High

Author: Charles W. Penrose, 1832–1925 Meter: Irregular Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:2-3 First Line: O ye mountains high, where the clear blue sky Lyrics: 1. O ye mountains high, where the clear blue sky Arches over the vales of the free, Where the pure breezes blow and the clear streamlets flow, How I’ve longed to your bosom to flee! O Zion! dear Zion! land of the free, Now my own mountain home, unto thee I have come; All my fond hopes are centered in thee. 2. Tho the great and the wise all thy beauties despise, To the humble and pure thou art dear; Tho the haughty may smile and the wicked revile, Yet we love thy glad tidings to hear. O Zion! dear Zion! home of the free, Tho thou wert forced to fly to thy chambers on high, Yet we’ll share joy and sorrow with thee. 3. In thy mountain retreat, God will strengthen thy feet; Without fear of thy foes thou shalt tread; And their silver and gold, as the prophets have told, Shall be brought to adorn thy fair head. O Zion! dear Zion! home of the free, Soon thy towers shall shine with a splendor divine, And eternal thy glory shall be. 4. Here our voices we’ll raise, and we’ll sing to thy praise, Sacred home of the prophets of God. Thy deliv’rance is nigh; thy oppressors shall die; And thy land shall be freedom’s abode. O Zion! dear Zion! land of the free, In thy temples we’ll bend; all thy rights we’ll defend; And our home shall be ever with thee. Topics: Pioneers; Restoration; Zion Used With Tune: [O ye mountains high, where the clear blue sky]

High on the Mountain Top

Author: Joel H. Johnson, 1802–1882 Appears in 13 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:2-3 Lyrics: 1. High on the mountain top A banner is unfurled. Ye nations, now look up; It waves to all the world. In Deseret's sweet, peaceful land, On Zion's mount behold it stand! 2. For God remembers still His promise made of old That he on Zion's hill Truth's standard would unfold! Her light should there attract the gaze Of all the world in latter days. 3. His house shall there be reared, His glory to display, And people shall be heard In distant lands to say: We'll now go up and serve the Lord, Obey his truth and learn his word. 4. For there we shall be taught The law that will go forth, With truth and wisdom fraught, To govern all the earth. Forever there his ways we'll tread, And save ourselves with all our dead. Topics: Genealogy and Temple Work; Restoration; Restoration of the Gospel; Truth; Zion Used With Tune: [High on the mountain top]

Sweet is the solace of Thy love

Author: A. L. Waring Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 2:12 Lyrics: Sweet is the solace of Thy love, My Heavenly Friend, to me, While through the hidden way of faith I journey home with Thee, Learning by quiet thankfulness As a dear child to be. Though from the shadow of Thy peace My feet would often stray, Thy mercy follows all my steps, And will not turn away; Yea, thou wilt comfort me at last, As none beneath Thee may. Oft in a dark and lonely place, I hush my hastened breath, To hear the comfortable words Thy loving Spirit saith; And feel my safety in Thy hand From every kind of death. O there is nothing in the world To weigh against Thy will; Even the dark times I dread the most Thy covenant filfil; And when the pleasant morning dawns I find Thee with me still. Then in the secret of my soul, Though hosts my peace invade, Though through a waste and weary land My lonely way he made, Thou, even Thou, wilt comfort me — I need not be afraid. Still in the solitary place I would awhile abide, Till with the solace of Thy love My heart is satisfied; And all my hopes of happiness Stay calmly at Thy side.
