Deep in the dust before Thy throne

Author: Anon. Appears in 32 hymnals Topics: Contrition Lyrics: 1 Deep in the dust before Thy throne, Our guilt and our disgrace we own; Great God! we own th'unhappy name Whence sprung our nature and our shame. 2 But whilst our spirits, filled with awe, Behold the terrors of Thy law, We sing the honors of Thy grace, That sent to save our ruined race. 3 We sing Thine everlasting Son, Who joined our nature to His own: The second Adam, from the dust, Raises the ruins of the first. 4 Where sin did reign, and death abound, There have the sons of Adam found Abounding life; there glorious grace Reigns through the Lord our righteousness. Amen. Used With Tune: ASHWELL

The Penitent's Plea

Author: R. M. Offord Appears in 12 hymnals Topics: Contrition First Line: Jesus, heed me, lost and dying Lyrics: 1 Jesus, heed me, lost and dying, Unto thee for shelter flying, Hear, oh, hear, my heart's sore crying: Heed me, or I die! 2 All my sin and sorrow feeling, Come I, as the leper, kneeling; Come to thee for help and healing, Heal me, or I die! 3 Naught have I to plead of merit, Naught but curse do I inherit; By thy gracious, quickening Spirit Save me, or I die! 4 Not my tears of deep contrition Can secure one sin's remission, Helpless, hopeless my condition: Help me, or I die! 5 Far away my dead works flinging, Nothing owning, nothing bringing, Only to thy mercy clinging: Bless me, or I die! 6 By thy cross, where hope is beaming, By its crimson fountain streaming, Flowing for the world's redeeming: Cleanse me, or I die! 7 So my soul shall praise thee ever, For the love which changes never, From which not ev'n death can sever: Saved no more to die. Scripture: Isaiah 1:18 Used With Tune: IRENE

Reasons for Praise

Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Heart Broken and Contrite First Line: O sing ye Hallelujah! Lyrics: 1 O sing ye Hallelujah! 'Tis good our God to praise; 'Tis pleasant and becoming To Him our songs to raise; He builds the walls of Zion, He seeks her wand'ring sons, He binds their wounds and comforts The brokenhearted ones. 2 The starry host He numbers, He calls them all by name; His greatness and His wisdom His wondrous works proclaim; The meek He lifts to honor, he humbles sinful pride; Give thanks to Him and utter His praises far and wide. 3 The heav'ns with clouds He covers, He sends the cheering rain; The slopes of all the mountains He fills with grass and grain; To beast and bird His goodness Their daily food supplies; He cares for all His creatures, Attentive to their cries. 4 No human pow'r delights Him, No earthly pomp or pride; He loves the meek who fear Him And in His love confide; Then praise thy God, O Zion, His gracious aid confess; He gives thee peace and plenty, His gifts thy children bless. 5 He sends His swift commandment, And snow and ice enfold The world, and none are able To stand before His cold. Again He gives commandment; The winds of summer blow, The snow and ice are melted, Again the waters flow. 6 His statutes and His judgments He makes His people know; To them as to no others His grace He loves to show; For matchless grace and mercy Your grateful praises bring; To Him give thanks forever, And Hallelujah sing. Scripture: Psalm 147 Used With Tune: HARTFORD

Lord, teach us how to pray aright

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 225 hymnals Topics: Heart contrition of Lyrics: Lord, teach us how to pray aright, With reverence and with fear; Though dust and ashes in Thy sight, We may, we must draw near. We perish if we cease from prayer; Oh! grant us power to pray; And when to meet Thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. Burden'd with guilt, convinced of sin, In weakness, want, and woe, Fightings without, and fears within, Lord, whither shall we go? God of all grace, we bring to Thee A broken, contrite heart; Give, what Thine eye delights to see, Truth in the inward part. Give deep humility; the sense Of godly sorrow give; A strong, desiring confidence To hear Thy voice and live;-- Faith in the only Sacrifice That can for sin atone; To cast our loves, to fix our eyes On Christ, on Christ alone;-- Patience to watch, and wait, and weep, Though mercy long delay; Courage, our fainting souls to keep, And trust Thee though Thou slay. 70 Give these, and then Thy will be done; Thus, strenghen'd with all might, We, through Thy Spirit and Thy Son, Shall pray, and pray aright.
