I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #303 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Topics: Year B Easter 4 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Jerusalem the golden

Author: St Bernard of Cluny (12th century); John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #340 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Year C Easter 4 Lyrics: 1 Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppressed. I know not, ah, I know not what joys await us there, what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. 2 They stand, those halls of Zion, all jubilant with song, and bright with many angels, and all the martyr throng; the prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene; the pastures of the blessèd are decked in glorious sheen. 3 There is the throne of David, and there, from care released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast; and they, who with their leader have fully run the race, are robed in white for ever before their Saviour's face. 4 O sweet and blessèd country, the home of God's elect! O sweet and blessèd country that eager hearts expect! Jesus, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest; who art, with God the Father and Spirit, ever blest. I Know that My Redeemer Lives!

Author: Samuel Medley, 1738-1799 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #352 (1978) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Easter 4 Lyrics: 1 I know that my Redeemer lives! What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, he lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living head! 2 He lives triumphant from the grave; He lives eternally to save; He lives exalted, throned above; He lives to rule his Church in love. 3 He lives to grant me rich supply; He lives to guide me with his eye; He lives to comfort me when faint; He lives to hear my soul's complaint. 4 He lives to silence all my fears; He lives to wipe away my tears; He lives to calm my troubled heart; He lives all blessings to impart. 5 He lives to bless me with his love; He lives to plead for me above; He lives my hungry soul to feed; He lives to help in time of need. 6 He lives, my kind, wise, heav'nly friend; He lives and loves me to the end; He lives, and while he lives, I'll sing; He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King! 7 He lives and grants me daily breath; He lives, and I shall conquer death; He lives my mansion to prepare; He lives to bring me safely there. 8 He lives, all glory to his name! He lives, my Savior, still the same; What joy this blest assurance gives: I know that my Redeemer lives! Languages: English Tune Title: DUKE STREET

Author: John Ernest Bode, 1816-1874 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #503a (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Year A Easter 4 Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou for ever near me, my Master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, not wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide. 2 O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin. 3 O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. 4 O Jesus, thou hast promised, to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend. 5 O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heav'n receive me, my Savior and my friend.
