Your hand, O God, has guided

Author: E. H. Plumptre (1821-1891) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #536 (1987) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: Lent 2, The King and the Kingdom Conflict Lyrics: 1 Your hand, O God, has guided your flock, from age to age; the faithfulness is written on history's every page. They knew your perfect goodness, whose deeds we now record; and both to this bear witness: one church, one faith, one Lord. 2 Your heralds brought the gospel to greatest as to least; they summoned all to hasten and share the great king's feast. And this was all their teaching in every deed and word; to all alike proclaiming: one church, one faith, one Lord. 3 Through many days of darkness, through many scenes of strife, the faithful few fought bravely to guard the nation's life. Their gospel of redemption — sin pardoned, life restored — was all in this enfolded: one church, one faith, one Lord. 4 And we, shall we be faithless? shall hearts fail, hands hang down? shall we evade the conflict and throw away the crown? Not so! In God's deep counsels some better thing is stored; we will maintain, unflinching, one church, one faith, one Lord. 5 Your mercy will not fail us nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, the victory shall be won. And then by earth and heaven your name shall be adored; and this shall be their anthem: one church, one faith, one Lord. Scripture: Ephesians 4:4-5 Languages: English Tune Title: THORNBURY

Jesus Calls Us

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander Hymnal: Voices United #562 (1996) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Topics: Lent 2 Year A First Line: Jesus calls us; o'er the tumult Lyrics: 1 Jesus calls us, o'er the tumult of our life's wild restless sea, day by day his clear voice sounding, saying, "Christian, follow me." 2 Long ago apostles heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred, leaving all for Jesus' sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, "Christian, love me more." 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these." 5 Jesus calls us: by your mercies, Saviour, may we hear your call, give our hearts to your obedience, serve and love you best of all. The God of Abraham praise

Author: Thomas Olivers, 1725-1799 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #642 (2000) Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Topics: Year B Lent 2 Lyrics: 1 The God of Abraham praise who reigns enthroned above, Ancient of everlasting Days, and God of love: Jehovah, great I AM, by earth and heav'n confessed; we bow and bless the sacred name, for ever blest. 2 The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command from earth we rise, and seek the joys at his right hand: we all on earth forsake, its wisdom, fame and pow'r; and him our only portion make, our shield and tow'r. 3 The God of Abraham praise, whose all-sufficient grace shall guide us all our happy days, in all our ways: he is our faithful friend; he is our gracious God; and he will save us to the end, through Jesus' blood. 4 He by himself has sworn - we on his oath depend - we shall, on eagles' wings upborne, to heav'n ascend: we shall behold his face, we shall his pow'r adore, and sing the wonders of his grace for evermore. 5 The whole triumphant host give thanks to God on high; 'Hail, Father, Son and Holy Ghost!' they ever cry: Hail, Abraham's God and ours! We join the heav'nly throng, and celebrate with all our pow'rs in endless song. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:12 Languages: English Tune Title: LEONI

My Lord, you wore no royal crown

Author: Christopher Idle (born 1938) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #118 (1987) Topics: Lent 2, The King and the Kingdom Conflict Lyrics: 1 My Lord, you wore no royal crown; you did not wield the powers of state, nor did you need a scholar's gown or priestly robe, to make you great. 2 You never used a killer's sword to end an unjust tyranny; your only weapon was your word, for truth alone could set us free. 3 You did not live a world away in hermit's cell or desert cave, but felt our pain and shared each day with those you came to seek and save. 4 You made no mean or cunning move, chose no unworthy compromise, but carved a track of burning love through tangles of deceit and lies. 5 You came unequaled, undeserved, to be what I was meant to be; you came to serve, not to be served; a light for all the world to see. 6 So when I stumble, set me right; command my life as you require; let all your gifts be my delight and you, my Lord, my one desire.
