One human pair, and only one

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Parents and family of mankind Lyrics: One human pair, and only one, Were form'd in youthful prime, All else that e'er beheld the sun, Were children in their time. 14 For each a mother's pangs were borne, And many a father's eye Wept o'er his infant born to mourn, His infant born to die. With millions life was but a spark, Extinct as soon as fired; Others, just glancing from the dark, Wept, smiled, look'd round, retired. Millions and millions more have pass'd Life's various pilgrimage, While Death at all his arrows cast, And slew of every age. Of these what multitudes untold Have never known their God, But blind, and ignorant, and bold, In paths of ruin trod. What guiltier multitudes have known, Yet scorn'd Him or denied, Lived to themselves and sin alone; And as they lived they died. We may not wander like the first; Then, lest we share the lot Of those more awfully accurst, Who knew, but loved, Him not,-- May we hold fast the faithful word, Our future time redeem, Live, while we live, unto the Lord, Die, when we die, to Him.

No Matter If You Live Now Far or Near

Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Parents Lyrics: 1 No matter if you live now far or near, no matter what your weakness or your strength, there is not one alive we count outside. May deeper joy for all now come at length, may deeper joy for all now come at length. 2 Let none among us lie or self-deceive; nor cultivate a hatred all or part, may never one of us live by our rage nor wish another injury of heart, nor wish another injury of heart. 3 Just as the goodly mother will protect her children, e’en at risk of her own life, so may we nurture an old mindfulness, a boundless heart beyond all fear and strife, a boundless heart beyond all fear and strife. Religious Training

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: Parents and Children First Line: O come, my people, to my law Lyrics: 1 O come, my people, to my law Attentively give ear; With willing heart and teachable The words of wisdom hear. 2 My mouth shall speak in parables Of hidden truths of old, Which, handed down from age to age, To us our fathers told. 3 We will not from their children hide Jehovah's worthy praise, But tell the greatness of His strength, His wondrous works and ways. 4 A testimony and a law The Lord our God decreed, And bade our fathers teach their sons, That they His ways might heed. 5 He willed that each succeeding race His deeds might learn and know, That children's children to their sons Might all these wonders show. 6 Let children learn God's righteous ways And on Him stay their heart, That they may not forget His works Nor from His ways depart. Scripture: Psalm 78 Used With Tune: HEBER

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 23 hymnals Topics: On the death of a parent Lyrics: 1 Though nature's voice you must obey, Think, while your swelling griefs o'erflow, That hand, which takes your joys away, That sov'reign hand can heal your wo. 2 And, while your mournful thoughts deplore The parent gone, remov'd the friend! With hearts resign'd,, his grace adore, On whom your nobler hopes depend. 3 Does he not bid his children come Thro' death's dark shades to realms of light!
