Psalm 145

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 257 hymnals Topics: Perfections of God First Line: My God, my King, thy various praise Lyrics: My God, my King, thy various praise Shall fill the remnant of my days; Thy grace employ my humble tongue Till death and glory raise the song. The wings of every hour shall bear Some thankful tribute to thine ear; And every setting sun shall see New works of duty done for thee. Thy truth and justice I'll proclaim; Thy bounty flows an endless stream; Thy mercy swift, thine anger slow, But dreadful to the stubborn foe. Thy works with sovereign glory shine, And speak thy majesty divine; Let Britain round her shores proclaim The sound and honor of thy name. Let distant times and nations raise The long succession of thy praise, And unborn ages make my song The joy and labor of their tongue. But who can speak thy wondrous deeds? Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds? Vast and unsearchable thy ways, Vast and immortal be thy praise! Scripture: Psalm 145

Thy grace shall dwell upon my tongue; And while my lips rejoice, The men that hear my sacred song Shall join their cheerful voice. Fathers to sons shall teach thy name, And children learn thy ways; Ages to come thy truth proclaim, And nations sound thy praise. Thy glorious deeds of ancient date Shall through the world be known; Thine arm of power, thy heav'nly state, With public splendor shown. Praise ye the Lord; 'tis good to raise

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 222 hymnals Topics: Perfections of God Lyrics: Praise ye the Lord; 'tis good to raise Our hearts and voices in his praise; His nature and his works invite To make this duty our delight. The Lord builds up Jerusalem, And gathers nations to his name; His mercy melts the stubborn soul, And makes the broken spirit whole. He formed the stars, those heav'nly flames; He counts their numbers, calls their names; His wisdom's vast, and knows no bound, A deep where all our thoughts are drowned. Great is our Lord, and great his might; And all his glories infinite: He crowns the meek, rewards the just, And treads the wicked to the dust. Sing to the Lord, exalt him high, Who spreads his clouds all round the sky; There he prepares the fruitful rain, Nor lets the drops descend in vain. He makes the grass the hills adorn, And clothes the smiling fields with corn; The beasts with food his hands supply, And the young ravens when they cry. What is the creature's skill or force, The sprightly man, the warlike horse, The nimble wit, the active limb? All are too mean delights for him. But saints are lovely in his sight, He views his children with delight; He sees their hope, he knows their fear, And looks, and loves his image there. Scripture: Psalm 147

All pow'rful, self existent God

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 91 hymnals Topics: Character and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 All-pow'rful, self-existent God, Who all creation dost sustain! Thou wast, and art, and art to come; And everlasting is thy reign. 2 Fix'd and eternal as thy days, Each glorious attribute divine, Thro' ages infinite, shall still With undiminish'd lustre shine. 3 Fountain of being! source of good! Immutable dost thou remain; Nor can the shadow of a change Obscure the glories of thy reign. 4 Nature her order shall reverse, Revolving seasons cease their round; Nor spring appear with blooming pride, Nor autumn be with plenty crown'd: 5 Yon shining orbs forget their course; The sun his destin'd path forsake; And burning desolaton mark Amid the world his wand'ring track: 6 Earth may with all her pow'rs dissolve, If such the great Creator's will: But thou for ever art the same; "I am" is thy memorial still.

Give to the Lord, ye sons of fame

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 105 hymnals Topics: Character and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Give to the Lord, ye sons of fame, Give to the Lord renown and pow'r; Ascribe due honours to His name, And his eternal might adore. 2 The Lord proclaims His pow'r aloud O'er the ocean and the land; His voice divides the wat'ry cloud, And lightnings blaze at his command. 3 He speaks, and howling tempests rise, And lay the forest bare around; the fiercest beasts, with piteous cries, Confess the terror of the sound. 4 His thunders rend the vaulted skies, And palaces and temples shake. The mountains tremble at the noise, The valleys roar, the deserts quake. 5. The Lord sits sov'reign o'er the flood; The Thund’rer reigns for ever King; But makes his church His blest abode, Where we His awful glories sing. 6 We see no terrors in his name, But in our God a Father find. The voice that shakes all nature's frame, Speaks comfort to the pious mind.

Lord, thou hast searched, and seen me through

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 327 hymnals Topics: Character and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Lord, thou hast search'd and seen me through; Thine eye commands with piercing view, My rising and my resting hours, My heart and flesh, with all their powr's. 2 Could I so false, so faithless prove, To quit thy service and thy love, Where, Lord, could I thy presence shun, Or from thy dreadful glory run? 3 If, mounted on a morning ray, I fly beyond the western sea; Thy swifter hand would first arrive, And there arrest thy fugitive. 4 Or should I try to shun thy sight Beneath the spreading veil of night: One glance of thine, one piercing ray, Would kindle darkness into day. 5 The veil of night is no disguise, No screen from thy all-searching eyes; Thy hand can seize Thy foes as soon Through midnight shades as blazing noon. 6. O may these thoughts possess my breast, Where’er I rove, where’er I rest! Nor let my weaker passions dare Consent to sin, for God is there.

My soul, repeat his praise

Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 468 hymnals Topics: Character and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 My soul, repeat his praise, Whose mercies are so great; Whose anger is so slow to rise, So ready to abate. 2 God will not always chide; And, when His strokes are felt, His strokes are fewer than our crimes, And lighter than our guilt. 3 High as the heav’ns are rais'd, Above the ground we tread, So far the riches of his grace Our highest thoughts exceed. 4 His power subdues our sins; And his forgiving love Far as the east is from the west, Doth all our guilt remove. 5 The pity of the Lord, To those that fear His name, Is such as tender parents feel; He knows our feeble frame. 6 Our days as are the grass, Or like the morning flower! If one sharp blast sweep o’er the field It withers in an hour. 7 But Thy compassions, Lord, To endless years endure; And children’s children ever find Thy words of promise sure.

Lord, all I am is known to thee!

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 127 hymnals Topics: Being and Perfections of God Lyrics: 1 Lord, all I am is known to thee! In vain my soul would try To shun thy presence, or to flee The notice of thine eye. 2 Thy all-surrounding sight surveys My rising and my rest, My public walks, my private ways, And secrets of my breast. 3 My thoughts lie open to thee, Lord, Before they’re form'd within; And ere my lips pronounce the word, Thou know'st the sense I mean. 4 O wondrous knowledge, deep and high! Where can a creature hide? Within thy circling arms I lie, Beset on ev'ry side. 5 So let thy grace surround me still, And like a bulwark prove, To guard my soul from ev'ry ill, Secured by sov'reign love.
