The Lord will come and not be slow

Author: John Milton, 1608-1674 Hymnal: Common Praise #37 (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Proper 12 Year C Lyrics: 1 The Lord will come and not be slow, his footsteps cannot err; before him righteousness shall go, his royal harbinger. 2 Truth from the earth, like to a flower, shall bud and blossom then; and justice, from her heavenly bower, look down on mortal men. 3 Rise, God, judge thou the earth in might, this wicked earth redress; for thou art he who shalt by right the nations all possess. 4 The nations all whom thou hast made shall come, and all shall frame to bow them low before thee, Lord, and glorify thy name. 5 For great thou art, and wonders great by thy strong hand are done: thou in thy everlasting seat remainest God alone. Scripture: 2 Peter 3:9 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. STEPHEN

Lord, teach us how to pray aright

Author: James Montgomery, 1771-1854 Hymnal: Common Praise #98 (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Proper 12 Year A Lyrics: 1 Lord, teach us how to pray aright with reverence and with fear; though dust and ashes in thy sight, we may, we must, draw near. 2 We perish if we cease from prayer: O grant us power to pray; and, when to meet thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. 3 God of all grace, we bring to thee a broken, contrite heart; give what thine eye delights to see, truth in the inward part; 4 Faith in the only sacrifice that can for sin atone, to cast our hopes, to fix our eyes, on Christ, on Christ alone; 5 Patience to watch and wait and weep, though mercy long delay; courage our fainting souls to keep, and trust thee though thou slay. 6 Give these, and then thy will be done; thus, strengthened with all might, we, through thy Spirit and thy Son, shall pray, and pray aright. Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10 Languages: English Tune Title: ST HUGH

Come down, O Love divine

Author: Bianco da Siena (d. 1434); Richard Frederick Littledale (1833-1890) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #238a (2013) Meter: 6.6.11 D Topics: Proper 12 Year B Lyrics: 1 Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3 Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Scripture: John 13:31-35 Languages: English Tune Title: DOWN AMPNEY
