Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Hymnal: Voices United #193 (1996) Meter: 7.7.7.5 Topics: Proper 9 Year A Lyrics: 1 Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, taught by you, we covet most, of your gifts at Pentecost, holy, heavenly love. 2 Love is kind, and suffers long; love is humble, thinks no wrong; love than death itself more strong; therefore give us love. 3 Prophecy will fade away, melting in the light of day; love will ever with us stay; therefore give us love. 4 Faith will vanish into sight; hope be emptied in delight; love in heaven will shine more bright; therefore give us love. 5 Faith and hope and love we see joining hand in hand agree; but the greatest of the three, and the best is love. For the Fruit of All Creation

Author: Fred Pratt Green Hymnal: Voices United #227 (1996) Meter: 8.4.8.4.8.8.8.4 Topics: Proper 9 Year C Lyrics: 1 For the fruit of all creation, thanks be to God. For these gifts to every nation, thanks be to God. For the ploughing, sowing, reaping, silent growth while we are sleeping, future needs in earth's safe-keeping, thanks be to God. 2 In the just reward of labour, God's will is done. In the help we give our neighbour, God's will is done. In our worldwide task of caring for the hungry and despairing, in the harvests we are sharing, God's will is done. 3 For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God. For the good we all inherit, thanks be to God. For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us, most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God. I cannot tell

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #303 (2000) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Topics: Year A Proper 9 First Line: I cannot tell how he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell how he whom angels worship should stoop to love the peoples of the earth, or why as shepherd he should seek the wand'rer with his mysterious promise of new birth. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when, at his bidding, ev'ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when ev'ry heart with perfect love is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n and heav'n to earth, will answer: 'At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Isaiah 40:5 Languages: English Tune Title: LONDONDERRY AIR

It fell upon a summer day

Author: Stopford Augustus Brooke, 1832-1916 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #331 (2000) Meter: 8.8.8.6 Topics: Year A Proper 9 Lyrics: 1 It fell upon a summer day, when Jesus walked in Galilee, the mothers from a village brought their children to his knee. 2 He took them in his arms, and laid his hands on each remembered head; "Allow these little ones to come to me,' he gently said. 3 'Forbid them not; unless ye bear the childlike heart your hearts within, unto my kingdom ye may come, but may not enter in.' 4 My Lord, I fain would enter there; O let me follow thee, and share thy meek and lowly heart, and be freed from all worldly care. 5 O happy thus to live and move, and sweet this world, where I shall find God’s beauty everywhere, his love, his good in humankind. 6 Then, Father, grant this childlike heart, that I may come to Christ, and feel his hands on me in blessing laid, love-giving, strong to heal. God has spoken — by his prophets

Author: George Wallace Briggs (1875-1959) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #379 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Proper 9 Year B Lyrics: 1 God has spoken — by his prophets, spoken his unchanging word; each from age to age proclaiming God the one, the righteous Lord; in the world's despair and turmoil one firm anchor holds us fast: God eternal reigns for ever, God the first and God the last. 2 God has spoken-by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son; brightness of the Father's glory, with the Father ever one: spoken by the Word incarnate, Life, before all time began, Light of Light, to earth descending, God, revealed as Son of Man. 3 God is speaking — by his Spirit speaking to our hearts again; in the ageless Word declaring God's own message, now as then. Through the rise and fall of nations one sure faith is holding fast: God abides, his word unchanging, God the first and God the last. Scripture: John 1:1-14 Languages: English Tune Title: MEAD HOUSE
