Behold the man

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CXXXVI (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Sufferings and Death of Christ; Suffering of Christ First Line: Ye that pass by, behold the man Lyrics: 1 Ye that pass by, behold the man, The man of grief condemn'd for you, The Lamb of God for sinners slain, Weeping to Calvary pursue. 2 His sacred limbs they stretch, they tear, With nails they fasten to the wood— His sacred limbs— expos'd and bare, Or only cover'd with his blood. 3 See there! his temples crown'd with thorns, His bleeding hands extended wide, His streaming feet transfix'd and torn, The fountain gushing from his side. 4 Thou dear, thou suffering Son of God, How doth thy heart to sinners move! Sprinkle on us thy precious blood, And melt us with thy dying love! 5 The earth could to her centre quake, Convuls'd when her Creator died; O may our inmost nature shake, And bow with Jesus crucified! 6 At thy last gasp the graves display'd Their horrors to the upper skies; O that our souls might burst the shade, And, quicken'd by thy death, arise! 7 The rocks could feel thy powerful death, And tremble, and asunder part; O rend, with thy expiring breath, The harder marble of our heart. I Gave My Life for Thee

Author: Frances R. Havergal Hymnal: Favorite Hymns of Praise #58 (1967) Topics: Christ Suffering; Christ Suffering Lyrics: 1 I gave My life for thee, My precious blood I shed, That thou might'st ransomed be, And quickened from the dead; I gave, I gave My life for thee, What hast thou given for Me? I gave, I gave My life for thee, What hast thou given for Me? 2 My Father's house of light, My glory-circled throne, I left for earthly night, For wand'rings sad and lone; I left, I left it all for thee, Hast thou left aught for Me? I left, I left it all for thee, Hast thou left aught for Me? 3 I suffered much for thee, More than thy tongue can tell, Of bitt'rest agony, To rescue thee from hell; I've borne, I've borne it all for thee, What hast thou borne for Me? I've borne, I've borne it all for thee, What hast thou borne for Me? 4 And I have brought to thee, Down from My home above, Salvation full and free, My pardon and My love; I bring, I bring rich gifts to thee, What hast thou brought to Me? I bring, I bring rich gifts to thee, What hast thou brought to Me? Languages: English Tune Title: [I gave my life for thee]

I Cannot Tell

Author: William Y. Fullerton Hymnal: The Worshiping Church #109 (1990) Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Topics: Jesus Christ Suffering First Line: I cannot tell why he whom angels worship Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should come in flesh as prophets long foretold, or why the Shepherd longs to save the wanderers and bring them back rejoicing to the fold. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and labored, and so the promised Savior of the world is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for still the suffering Savior of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendor, when he, the risen Savior of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and countless voices then will join to sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth will answer: "At last the living Savior of the world is King!" And did the Son of God appear

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #126 (1854) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Christ our example in suffering Lyrics: And did the Son of God appear A man of toil and suffering here? Him let us then our pattern make, Who toil'd and suffer'd for our sake. Though holy, harmless, undefiled, He learn'd obedience, from a child; Through youth in grace and wisdom grew, As man the Tempter's wiles o'erthrew. Glad tidings, when He went to preach, How mild and healing was His speech! Though with authority He taught, And miracles of mercy wrought. Rebuke and scorn He meekly bore, The more reviled He loved the more; Thus He delighted to fulfil Love's law,--His heavenly Father's will. O'er land and sea, whate'er the cost, He came to seek and save the lost; For this he hunger'd, thirsted, sigh'd, Watch'd, pray'd and labour'd, lived and died. 129 Taught by the Holy Spirit may we In all things like our pattern be; By His, our words and actions framed And bear His cross, who bear His name. On a Hill Far Away (The Old Rugged Cross)

Refrain: So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown. 2 O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above, To bear it to dark Calvary. [Refrain] 3 In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me. [Refrain] 4 To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, It's shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I'll share. Beneath the Cross of Jesus

Author: Elizabeth C. Clephane Hymnal: Hymns of Faith #154 (1980) Topics: Christ Suffering; Christ Suffering Lyrics: 1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand-- The shadow of a mighty Rock Within a weary land; A home within the wilderness, A rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat, And the burden of the day. 2 Upon that cross of Jesus Mine eyes at times can see The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me; And from my smitten heart with tears Two wonders I confess-- The wonders of redeeming love And my unworthiness. 3 I take, O cross, thy shadow For my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than The sunshine of His face; Content to let the world go by, To know no gain nor loss, My sinful self my only shame, My glory all the cross. Amen. Scripture: Isaiah 32:2 Languages: English Tune Title: [Beneath the cross of Jesus]
