We Have Not Known Thee as We Ought

Author: Thomas Benson Pollock Hymnal: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #178 (2018) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Topics: Self-Examination Lyrics: 1 We have not known thee as we ought, nor learned thy wisdom, grace and pow'r; the things of earth have filled our thought, and trifles of the passing hour. Lord, give us light thy truth to see, and make us wise in knowing thee. 2 We have not feared thee as we ought, nor bowed beneath thine awesome eye, nor guarded deed and word and thought, remembering that God was nigh. Lord, give us faith to know thee near, and grant the grace of holy fear. 3 We have not loved thee as we ought, nor cared that we are loved by thee; thy presence we have coldly sought, and feebly longed thy face to see. Lord, give a pure and loving heart to feel and own the love thou art. 4 We have not served thee as we ought; alas! the duties left undone, the work with little fervor wrought, the battles lost or scarcely won! Lord, give the zeal and give the might, for thee to toil, for thee to fight. 5 When shall we know thee as we ought, and fear and love and serve aright! When shall we, out of trial brought, be perfect in the land of light! Lord, may we day by day prepare to see thy face and serve thee there. Scripture: Nehemiah 1:7 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. Lord, my God, I long to know

Hymnal: The Book of Worship #209 (1867) Topics: Self -Examination Lyrics: 1 Lord, my God, I long to know, Oft it causes anxious thought, Do I love Thee, Lord, or no? Am I Thine, or am I not? 2 Could my heart so hard remain, Prayer a task and burden prove, Any duty give pain, If I knew a Saviour's love? 3 When I turn mine eyes within, Oh how dark, and vain, and wild! Prone to unbelief and sin, Can I deem myself thy child? 4 Yet I mourn my stubborn will, Find my sin a grief and thrall: Should I grief for what I feel If I did not love at all? 5 Could I love thy saints to meet, Choose the ways I once abhorred, Find at times the promise sweet, If I did not love Thee, Lord? 6 Saviour, let me love Thee more, If I love at all, I pray; If I have not loved before, Help me to begin to-day. Thou great, mysterious, God unknown

Hymnal: The Book of Worship #210 (1867) Topics: Self -Examination Lyrics: 1 Thou great, mysterious, God unknown, Whose love hath gently led me on E'en from my infant days; Mine inmost soul expose to view, And tell me if I ever knew Thy justifying grace. 2 If I have only known Thy fear, And followed with a heart sincere Thy drawing from above, Now, now the farther grace bestow, And let my sprinkled conscience know Thy sweet forgiving love. 3 Short of Thy love I would not stop, A stranger to the gospel hope, The sense of sin forgiven; I would not, Lord, my soul deceive, Without Thine inward witness live, That antepast of heaven. 4 If now the witness were in me, Would He not testify of thee, In Jesus reconcil'd? And should I not with faith draw nigh, And boldly, Abba, Father, cry, I know myself Thy child? 5 Ah! never let Thy servant rest, Till, of my part in Christ possessed, I on Thy mercy feed: Unworthy of the crumbs that fall, Yet raised by Him who died for all, To eat the children's bread. 6 Whate'er obstructs Thy pardoning love, Or sin, or righteousness, remove, Thy glory to display; My heart of unbelief convince, And now absolve me from my sins, And take them all away. Psalm 24

Hymnal: Moravian Book of Worship #244 (1995) Topics: Self-Examination First Line: The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it Lyrics: The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those you live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully, They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation. Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. (Gloria Patri may be added) Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Scripture: Psalm 24 Languages: English Tune Title: [The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it]

The All-Seing GOD

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #256 (1740) Topics: Examination, or Evidences of Graces First Line: Lord, thou hast search'd and seen me thro' Lyrics: 1 Lord, thou hast search'd and seen me thro'; Thine Eye commands with piercing View My rising and my resting Hours, My Heart and Flesh, with all their Pow'rs. 2 My Thoughts, before they are my own, Are to my GOD distinctly known; He knows the Words I mean to speak Ere from my op'ning Lips they break. 3 Within thy circling Pow'r I stand On every Side I find thy Hand; Awake, asleep, at home, abroad, I am surrounded still with GOD. 4 Amazing Knowledge, vast and great! What large Extent! What lofty Height! My Soul, with all the Pow'rs I boast! Is in the boundless Prospect lost. 5 O may these Thoughts possess my Breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker Passions dare Consent to sin, for GOD is there. Pause I. 6 Could I so false, so faithless prove, To quit thy Service and thy Love, Where, Lord, could I thy Presence shun, Or from thy dreadful Glory run? 7 If up to Heav'n I take my Flight, 'Tis there thou dwell'st enthron'd in Light; Or dive to Hell, there Vengeance reigns, And Satan groans beneath thy Chains. 8 If, mounted on a Morning-Ray, I fly beyond the Western Sea, Thy swifter Hand would first arrive, And there arrest thy Fugitive. 9 Or should I try to shun thy Sight, Beneath the spreading Veil of Night, One Glance of thine, one piercing Ray, Would kindle Darkness into day. 10 O may these Thoughts possess my Breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker Passions dare Consent to sin, for GOD is there. Pause II 11 The Veil of Night is no Disguise, No Screen from thy All-searching Eyes: Thy Hand can search thy Foes as soon Through Midnight Shades as blazing Noon. 12 Midnight and Noon in this agree, Great GOD, they're both alike to Thee: Not Death can hide what GOD will spy, And Hell lies naked to his Eye. 13 O may these Thoughts possess my Breast, Where'er I rove, where'er I rest! Nor let my weaker Passions dare Consent to sin, for GOD is there. Scripture: Psalm 139 Languages: English

The wonderful Formation of Man

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #257 (1740) Topics: Examination, or Evidences of Graces First Line: 'Twas from thy Hand, my GOD, I came Lyrics: 1 'Twas from thy Hand, my GOD, I came, A Work of such a curious Frame In me thy fearful Wonders shine, And each proclaims thy Skill divine. 2 Thine Eyes did all my Limbs survey, Which yet in dark Confusion lay; Thou saw'st the daily Growth they took, Formed by the Model of thy Book. 3 By Thee my growing Parts were nam'd, And what thy sov'reign Counsels fram'd, The breathing Lungs, the beating Heart, Was copy'd with unerring Art. 4 At last, to shew my Maker's Name, GOD stamp'd his Image on my Frame, And in some unknown Moment join'd The finish'd Members to the Mind. 5 There the young Seeds of Thought began, And all the Passions of the Man: Great GOD, our infant Nature pays Immortal Tribute to thy Praise. Pause. 6 Lord, since in my advancing age I've acted on Life's busy Stage, Thy Thoughts of Love to me surmount The Pow'r of Numbers to recount. 7 I could survey the Ocean o'er, And count each Sand that makes the Shore, Before my swiftest Thoughts could trace The num'rous Wonders of thy grace. 8 These on my Heart are still imprest, With these I give my Eyes to Rest; And at my waking Hour I find GOD and his Love possess my Mind.
