Jan Roh

1487 - 1547 Topics: Church--Foundation and nature; Church--Foundation and nature Composer of "GAUDEAMUS PARITER" in Moravian Book of Worship Pseudonyms-- Johann Cornu Johann Horn John Horn Roh, Johann, was a native of Domascbitz near Leitmeritz, in Bohemia. Roh was his name in Bohemian, but when he wrote in Latin he styled himself Cornu, and in German Horn. In 1518 he was ordained priest and appointed preacher to the Bohemian Brethren's community at Jungbunzlau, in Bohemia. At the Synod of Brandeis, in Sep. 1529, he was chosen as one of the three Seniors of the Unity. Finally, at the Synod of Brandeis, in April 1532, he was appointed Bishop, and held this post till his death, at Jungbunzlau, Feb. 11, 1547. (Koch, ii. 114; Wackernagel, i. p. 727, &c.) Roh was the editor of the Bohemian Hymn Book of 1541, and is said to have written a number of hymns in the Bohemian language, but the edition of 1561 only gives one with his name. He also edited the second German hymn-book of the Brethren, viz., Ein Gesangbuch der Brüder inn Behemen und Merherrn, Nürnberg, 1544; and seems to have been author or translator of all, or nearly all, of the 32 hymns there added. Another hymn ("O heiliger Vater, glitiger Herr") is also given with his name in the Kirchengeseng, 1566. A considerable number of Ron's hymns passed into the Lutheran hymn-books of the 16th and 17th centuries, and into the Moravian Hymn Books of the 18th cent. Rather curiously in the last Moravian Hymn Books, (the Kleines Gesangbuch, Gnadau, 1870), his name is not found in the list of authors. Those of Roh's hymns which have been translated into English are:— i. Gottes Sohn ist kommen. Christmas. In 1544, as above, and thence in Wackernagel iii. p, 350, in 9 stanzas of 6 lines, The heading "Ave Hierarchia" refers to the melody, for it is not a translation from the Latin. Included in V. Babst's Gesang-Buch, Leipzig, 1553, and recently in the Unverfälschter Liedersegen, 1851, No. 6, Strangely enough this fine hymn was omitted from the Kirchengeseng of 1566 and later editions; and though it was included in the Herrnhut Gesang-Buch, 1735, and the Brüder Gesang-Buch, 1778, it has again been omitted from the Kleines Gesang-Buch, 1870. The translations are:— 1. Lo! from highest heaven. A free translation of stanzas i.-iii., vi., by A. T. Russell, as No. 27 in his Psalms & Hymns, 1851. Included, altered, in Kennedy, 1863. 2. Once He came in blessing. A good translation of stanzas i.-iii., v., ix., by Miss Winkworth, in her Chorale Book for England, 1863, No. 26. Included in J. Robinson's Collection, 1869, and the Pennsylvania Lutheran Church Book, 1868. 3. God's Son once descending. This is No. 249 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. Hymns not in English common use:— ii. Betrachtn wir heut zu dieser Frist. Easter. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii. p. 359, in 14 stanzas of 3 lines. Translated as:—(1) "The Saviour Jesus, Friend of Man." As No. 332 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. This is from the recast "Der selge Heiland, Jesus Christ" (based on ii.-v.), as No. 1875 in Appendix xii. c. 1745, to the Herrnhut Gesang-Buch 1735. iii. Ein starker Held ist uns kommen. Christmas. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii. p. 352, in 12 stanzas of 4 lines. Translated as (1) "God took our nature upon Him (stanza iii.), as No. 251 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. iv. Lob Gott getrost mit singen. Christian Church. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii. p. 360, in 9 stanzas of 8 lines. In the Kirchengeseng, 1566, two st. were inserted between iii. and iv. This form, in 11 stanzas, is No. 563 in the Unverfälschter Liedersegen 1851. In the Brüder Gesang-Buch 1778, No. 1014, is a cento in 3 st. (from st. vi., viii., ix. of the 1544, and iv. of the 1566), beginning "Lass dich durch nichts erschrecken," and this form has been translated as "O be not thou dismayed, Believing little band," as No. 596 in the Moravian Hymn Book, 1886. v. O Mensch, thu heut hören. Passiontide. 1544 as above, and in Wackernagel, iii., p. 355, in 20 stanzas of 4 lines. Matt Redman

He attended Ithaca College, receiving his B.A. in Music Education. He earned his Masters and did Doctoral work in Church Music at the University of Southern California. Fred Bock was one of the most recognized and respected leaders in the world of church music. He was an accomplished composer, arranger, clinician, studio musician, organist, pianist, choral director and music publisher. He was the founder and director of publications for the music publishing division of Word, Inc. and later started Gentry Publication and other publishers of church music. He was also minister of music at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, where he served for 18 years. Before that, he served as minister of music at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles for 14 years. Dale Wood

1934 - 2003 Topics: Church--Foundation and nature Composer of "EDEN CHURCH" in Moravian Book of Worship Dale Wood was born in Glendale, California, on February 13, 1934, of Finnish-Polish parentage (his father's last name was Wojtkiewiecz, which immigration authorities shortened to Wood). Dale grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Franklin High School, where he was voted "most likely to succeed" in his class. Raised a Lutheran, his career as a composer was launched at age 13 when he won a national hymn-writing competition for the American Lutheran Church. His first choral anthem was accepted for publication one year later. His knowledge of music was immense, and his appreciation ran the gamut from classical to the Broadway stage. He admired composers from Leroy Anderson to Villa Lobos, and he was comfortably conversant with artists such as Marcel Dupré and many theatre organists. Although he attended Occidental College, he never received a college degree. In the words of his former wife, Gloria, "No, the boy didn't need any degree. He fell out of the nest with all he needed." Dale began playing the organ in church at age 14, and he served as organist and choirmaster at Eden Lutheran Church in Riverside and The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin in San Francisco. He published numerous articles on worship, liturgy, and church music and was a contributing editor to the Journal of Church Music for over a decade. He lectured and conducted choral festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and Northern Europe, and served as editorial consultant for several hymnals. He headed the publication committee of the Choristers Guild from 1970 to 1974. After serving as music director at the Grace Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco from 1973 to 1974, he was appointed executive editor for The Sacred Music Press, a position he held from 1975 to 1996. He served as editor emeritus of The Sacred Music Press from 1996 until 2001. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) honored Dale Wood annually from 1967 for his work. In April 1993 Dale was honored with the prestigious Exemplar Medallion from California Lutheran University for his "more than forty years of joyful service to the church and humanity through the inspiration of his music." Hymns and canticles composed by Dale Wood are found in the Lutheran Book of Worship/, Worship II (a Roman Catholic hymnal), Seventh Day Adventist Hymnal, The Presbyterian Hymnal, The United Methodist Hymnal, the Agape Hymnal Supplement, the Moravian Book of Worship, the Chalice Hymnal, and several hymnal supplements. Wood's musical activities were not limited to sacred music. While still a college student, he entertained as organist at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles and appeared on television shows produced in Hollywood. In 1975 he was employed by the Royal Viking Line to entertain passengers on a 70-day cruise of the South Pacific and Orient. For many years Dale maintained his home and studio at The Sea Ranch, California, 115 miles north of San Francisco. It was here, amidst acres of redwood trees and gentle meadows on the rural and spectacular coastline of Northern California, that he composed most of his organ works, using a three-manual electronic theatre organ. Dale had a strong theatrical streak in him, and he maintained close ties with the American Theatre Organ Society. In his later years he collaborated with his partner, Ivan de la Garza, in designing the ATOS website. In 1977 Dale and jazz pianist George Shearing created a volume of organ settings of early American folk hymns entitled Sacred Sounds from George Shearing. Over a period of 11 weeks Shearing had recorded a series of improvisations at the piano. After the tapes were transcribed to paper, Shearing visited Dale in his studio at The Sea Ranch. Dale spent hours at the organ making suggestions of registrations and textures, while Shearing with his critical ear listened for accuracy. In recent years, Dale composed at the computer and was able to hear his work played back via MIDI, obviating the need for tedious proofreading. Most of his pieces were conceived with a three-manual organ in mind but are readily adaptable to smaller instruments. He gave general suggestions for registrations, but he always trusted in the performer's own imagination ("The printed music is just a blueprint, and it is the performer's job to complete the project," he liked to say). He used unusual techniques in several pieces, such as wedges in keys for pedal points ("Il est né," "Meditation on KEDRON"). His hymn arrangements were not all easy. Many require a significant amount of finger substitution; several involve "bridging" (playing on two manuals simultaneously with one hand); and his pedal lines sometimes go to the top of the pedalboard ("Amazing Grace" sports a high F#). Nor was he afraid to write pieces with accidentals. I cautioned him about a piece in six flats he planned to include in an upcoming volume, suggesting that some organists would find it overly challenging. Frederick W. Foster

1760 - 1835 Person Name: Frederick William Foster, 1760-1835 Topics: The Church's Life and Work Foundation and Nature Author of "Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord" in Hymnal and Liturgies of the Moravian Church Foster, Frederick William, second son. of William Foster, was born at Bradford, Aug. 1, 1760, and educated at Fulneck, near Leeds, and at Barby in Prussian Saxony. Entering the Moravian Ministry he held several appointments until 1818, when he was consecrated a Bishop of the Moravian Church. He died at Ockbrook, near Derby, April 12, 1835. He compiled the Moravian Hymn Book of 1801, the Supplement of 1808, and the revised edition of 1826. His translations from the German, and his original hymns appeared in that collection. Two of his original hymns are in the Irish Church Hymnal, 1873; (1) "Lord, Who didst sanctify" 1808 (Holiness desired); and (2) "With thanks before the Lord appear," 1826 (Praise of the Saviour).
