There's a wideness in God's mercy

Author: Dr. F. W. Faber, 1814-1863 Appears in 916 hymnals Topics: Sinners Welcomed Lyrics: 1. There's a wideness in God's mercy, Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in His justice, Which is more than liberty. 2. There is no place where earth's sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth's failings Have such kindly judgment given. 3. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Saviour; There is healing in His blood. 4. For the love of God is broader Than the measure of man's mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. 5. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed, There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head. 6. If our love were but more simple, We should take Him at His word, And our lives would be all sunshine In the favour of our Lord. In many editions the hymn begins with the following stanzas: Was there ever kindest shepherd Half so gentle, half so sweet, As the Saviour who would have us Come and gather round His feet? Souls of men, why will ye scatter Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will ye wander From a love so true and deep? Used With Tune: NEWTON FERNS

Come, let us to the Lord our God

Author: Dr. J. Morison, 1749-1798 Appears in 108 hymnals Topics: Sinners Contrite; Sinners Contrite Lyrics: 1 Come, let us to the Lord our God With contrite hearts return; Our God is gracious, nor will leave The desolate to mourn. 2 His voice commands the tempest forth, And stills the stormy wave; His arm, though it be strong to smite, Is also strong to save. 3 Long hath the sight of sorrow reigned; The dawn shall bring us light; God shall appear, and we shall rise With gladness in His sight. 4 Our hearts, if God we seek to know, Shall know Him and rejoice; His coming like the morn shall be, Like morning songs His voice. 5 As dew upon the tender herb, Diffusing fragrance round; As showers that usher in the spring, And cheer the thirsty ground; 6 So shall His presence bless our souls, And shed a joyful light; That hallowed morn shall chase away The sorrows of the night. Used With Tune: ST. PETER

Ah, how shall fallen man

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 157 hymnals Topics: The Sinner Christ the Way of Life Lyrics: 1 Ah, how shall fallen man Be just before his God? If he contend in righteousness, We sink beneath his rod. 2 If he our ways should mark With strict inquiring eyes, Could we for one of thousand faults A just excuse devise? 3 All-seeing, powerful God! Who can with thee contend? Or who, that tries the unequal strife, Shall prosper in the end? 4 The mountains, in thy wrath, Their ancient seats forsake; The trembling earth deserts her place, Her rooted pillars shake. 5 Ah! how shall guilty man Contend with such a God? None, none, can meet him and escape, But through the Saviour's blood. Used With Tune: OLMUTZ

Awake, my heart, arise, my tongue

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 125 hymnals Topics: The Sinner Repentance and Acceptance Lyrics: 1 Awake, my heart, arise, my tongue, Prepare a tuneful voice; In God, the life of all my joys, Aloud will I rejoice. 2 'Tis he adorned my naked soul, And made salvation mine; Upon a poor, polluted worm He makes his graces shine. 3 And lest the shadow of a spot Should on my soul be found, He took the robe the Saviour wrought, And cast it all around. 4 How far that heavenly robe excels What earthly princes wear! These ornaments, how bright they shine! How white the garments are! 5 The Spirit wrought my faith and love And hope, and every grace; But Jesus spent his life to work The robe of righteousness. Used With Tune: ARLINGTON

Forgive us, Lord! to thee we cry

Author: Thomas Hastings Appears in 33 hymnals Topics: The Sinner Repentance and Acceptance Lyrics: 1 Forgive us, Lord! to thee we cry; Forgive us thro' thy matchless grace, On thee alone our souls rely; Be thou our strength and righteousness. 2 Forgive thou us, as we forgive The ills we suffer from our foes; Restore us, Lord, and bid us live; O! let us in thine arms repose. 3 Forgive us, for our guilt is great, Our wretched souls no merit claim; For sovereign mercy still we wait, And ask but in the Saviour's name. Used With Tune: HAMBURG
