We believe in God the Father

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #403 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 We believe in God the Father, God almighty, by whose plan earth and heaven sprang to being, all created things began. We believe in Christ the Saviour, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came. 2 Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven's King to rule and reign, to the Father's side ascended till as judge he comes again. 3 We believe in God the Spirit; in one Church, below, above: saints of God in one communion, one in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Saviour, Lord and friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end. Scripture: Luke 2:31-32 Languages: English Tune Title: LUX EOI

Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness

Author: Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878); Johann Franck (1618-1677) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #440 (2013) Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness, leave the gloomy haunts of sadness; come into the daylight's splendour, there with joy thy praises render unto him whose grace unbounded hath this wondrous banquet founded: high o'er all the heavens he reigneth, yet to dwell with thee he deigneth. 2 Now I sink before thee lowly, filled with joy most deep and holy, as with trembling awe and wonder on thy mighty works I ponder: how, by mystery surrounded, depth no mortal ever sounded, none may dare to pierce unbidden secrets that with thee are hidden. 3 Sun, who all my life dost brighten, light, who dost my soul enlighten, joy, the sweetest heart e'er knoweth, fount, whence all my being floweth, at thy feet I cry, my Maker, let me be a fit partaker of this blessed food from heaven, for our good, thy glory, given. 4 Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray thee, let me gladly here obey thee; never to my hurt invited, be thy love with love requited: from this banquet let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep its treasure; through the gifts thou here dost give me, as thy guest in heaven receive me. Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face

Author: Horatius N. Bonar (1808-1889) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #447 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face; here would I touch and handle things unseen, here grasp with firmer hand the eternal grace, and all my weariness upon thee lean. 2 Here would I feed upon the bread of God, here drink with thee the royal wine of heaven; here would I lay aside each earthly load, here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven. 3 Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness; mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing blood; here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace — thy blood, thy righteousness, O Lord, my God. 4 I have no help but thine; nor do I need another arm save thine to lean upon; it is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; my strength is in thy might, thy might alone. 5 Too soon we rise; the symbols disappear; the feast, though not the love, is past and gone; the bread and wine remove, but thou art here, nearer than ever, still our shield and sun. 6 Feast after feast thus comes and passes by, yet, passing, points to the glad feast above, giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy, the Lamb's great bridal feast of bliss and love. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Languages: English Tune Title: MAGDA

Just as I am, without one plea

Author: Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #451a (2013) Meter: 8.8.8.6 Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come. 2 Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come. 3 Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come. 4 Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come. 5 Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come. 6 Just as I am, of that free love the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. We faint with thirst; revive us, of thine abundance give us, and all we need provide. 3 O Jesus, by thee bidden, we here adore thee, hidden in forms of bread and wine. O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray

Author: William Henry Turton (1856-1938) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #460 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray that all thy church might be for ever one, grant us at every Eucharist to say with longing heart and soul, 'Thy will be done': O may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 2 For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace: thus may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 3 We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the church which still that faith doth keep: soon may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 4 So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love: more blessèd still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity.
