Before the Lord we bow

Author: F. S. Key Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 74 hymnals Topics: Various Occasions Day of Common Prayer; Various Occassions National Lyrics: 1 Before the Lord we bow, The God who reigns above, And rules the world below, Boundless in power and love. Our thanks we bring In joy and praise, Our hearts we raise To heaven's high King. 2 The nation Thou hast blest May well Thy love declare, From foes and fears at rest, Protected by Thy care. For this fair land, For this bright day, Our thanks we pay-- Gifts of Thy hand. 3 May every mountain height, Each vale and forest green, Shine in Thy word's pure light, And its rich fruits be seen! May every tongue Be tuned to praise, And join to raise A grateful song. 4 Earth! hear thy Maker's voice, The great Redeemer own, Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone; Cast down thy pride, Thy sin deplore, And bow before The Crucified. 5 And when in power He comes, O may our native land, From all its rending tombs, Send forth a glorious band, A countless throng Ever to sing To heaven's high King Salvation's song. Used With Tune: [Before the Lord we bow]

Thanksgiving

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 12 hymnals Topics: Special Occasions Public and National Blessings and Afflictions First Line: Praise, happy land! Jehovah's name Lyrics: 1 Praise, happy land! Jehovah's name; His goodness, and thy bliss proclaim: For thee each blessing largely flows, That freedom's lib'ral hand bestows. 2 Thy children are secure and bless'd; Thy shores have peace, thy cities rest; He feeds thy sons with finest wheat, And adds his blessing to their meat. 3 Thy changing seasons he ordains, Thine early and thy latter rains; His flakes of snow like wool he sends, And well the springing corn defends. 4 But he hath nobler works and ways, To call his people to his praise: To all our land his laws are shown; His gospel's through the nation known.

God! As with Silent Hearts

Author: Fred Kaan Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: The Church at Worship Special Days, Seasons, Occasions: Remembrance; Nation; Remembrance Day First Line: God! As with silent hearts we bring to mind Lyrics: 1 God! As with silent hearts we bring to mind how hate and war diminish humankind, we pause, and seek in worship to increase our knowledge of the things that make for peace. 2 Hallow our will as humbly we recall the lives of those who gave and give their all. We thank you, Lord, for women, children, men who seek to serve in love, today as then. 3 Give us deep faith to comfort those who mourn, high hope to share with all the newly born, strong love in our pursuit of human worth: "lest we forget" the future of this earth. 4 So, Prince of Peace, disarm our trust in power, teach us to coax the plant of peace to flower. May we, impassioned by your living Word, remember forward to a world restored. Used With Tune: ST AGNES (LANGRAN)

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above

Author: Cecil Spring-Rice, 1859-1918 Appears in 22 hymnals Topics: Sacraments and Other Occasions National Lyrics: 1 I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; the love that never falters, the love that pays the price, the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. 2 And there's another country I've heard of long ago, most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; we may not count her armies, we may not see her King; her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace. Used With Tune: THAXTED

While sounds of war are heard around

Appears in 50 hymnals Topics: Particular Occasions and Circumstances Public and National Blessings and Afflictions Lyrics: 1 While sounds of war are heard around, And death and ruin strew the ground: To thee we look, on thee we call, The Parent and the Lord of all. 2 Thou, who hast stamp'd on human kind The image of a heav'n-born mind, And in a Father’s wide embrace Hast cherished all the kindred race; 3 O see, with that insatiate rage Thy sons their impious battles wage; How spreads destruction like a flood, And brothers shed their brothers' blood! 4 See guilty passions spring to birth, And deeds of hell deform the earth; Whilst righteousness and justice mourn, And love and pity droop forlorn. 5 Great God! whose pow'rful hand can bind The raging waves, the furious wind, O bid the human tempest cease, And hush the madd'ning world to peace. 6 With rev'rence may each hostile land Hear and obey that high command, Thy Son’s blest errand from above:— “My creatures, live in mutual love!”
